Days Of Solidarity With Troy Davis

The Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles will hold a clemency hearing for Troy Davis on Monday, September 19, two days before he is scheduled to be executed at 7 pm on September 21.  During the days leading up to this hearing we should declare our Solidarity with Troy.  Come to Atlanta for the big September 16 march and rally at Ebeneezer Baptist Church, or organize events in your own community for  that day.  Make the weekend of the 17th-18th a time for reflection or prayer:  for the Davis family, for the MacPhail family, and for justice to prevail.

These should also be days of Action.  Screen the videos, share the Tweets, and get more signatures on the petition.

We are down to the wire, but the Board of Pardons and Paroles exists for just such occasions, to prevent injustices when our courts have been unable to do so.  The Board has said it will not allow an execution unless there is “no doubt” about guilt.  With no physical evidence, most of the witnesses recanting, and sworn testimony pointing to an alternative suspect, doubts in this case are rampant.

Please organize now and urge the Board to prevent this execution.

  1. Is it true that the Board of P&P has 3 new members? Does anyone know if they have 'strings attached' Well, I guess we pretty much know the answer to that, as this case is fraught with people 'obligated' to benefactors.
Today I did one of the hardest things I've ever done. I wrote my friend Troy. It could be the last, altho am trying not to acknowledge that to myself. Troy Davis has made me a better person. How many people can you say that about. I guess, as well as the railroading and other self-motivated actions, AND the death of Officer MacPhail, my biggest motivator is that the state wants to kill a human being, who has more humanity than most living. Doesn't matter why he has it, or when it came upon him, he is, as are all in some measure, a thing of worth and godliness. I bet all of us out here can point to something that is kinder, more tolerant, more understanding, more loving, because of our encountering Troy and family. I am inconconsolable, as I guess is only right. To quote my fave, John Prine, 'Jesus don't like killin no matter what the reason's for.' Please God, let us have this one.

  3. What time does the ATL march start? Is it 6 pm at the Woodruff Center? I read somewhere that services start at 7pm at the Church? Could I get some more of those details? Thank you!

  15. I'm with Brandon on this one. I would love to participate in a public Troy Davis solidarity event, but I can't find a listing of any such events on this site. I need to know if anything is scheduled in my area before I can attend.

  17. to Troy and to the people acting for justice on his case: By simply doing a small action for this case we are already putting humanity into the otherwise dehumanizing and terrible situation that Mr Davis has to go through.
We do not give up when there is injustice. Luis

  19. Information on the web about planned actions is confusing and contradictory. The Angela Davis article Stephen posted lists:

New York City: Emergency Demonstration Friday, Sept. 16, 4:30-6
p.m., Times Square, 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue.

It is not clear what organization is sponsoring this event, if it is meant to replace the Union Square event (5:30 p.m.) I mentioned above or is a separate and additional plan.

Actually I think the Times Square venue would be more impressive. Crowds in Union Square are kind of contained within the park, and would not draw as much attention from people on the street who are not already participating.

I hope that Amnesty will clarify the site and time for the New York rally soon. There is still nothing I can find on any page of Amnesty USA's website about any planned action for Sept. 16th.

Dear Chairman Donald and Members of the Board:

In an Order Suspending the Execution of Sentence of Death, issued on July 16, 2007 with regard to Mr. Troy Davis’ case, you stated, “The members of the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles will not allow an execution to proceed in this State unless and until its members are convinced that there is no doubt as to the guilt of the accused.” I commend you on the extraordinary wisdom you’ve demonstrated by your commitment to abide by this strong moral statement. Your role as the final ‘check and balance’ on the judicial system requires at least this much caution, if we are to prevent the State of Georgia from the possibility of making an irreversible and inexcusable error. The scheduled execution of Mr. Davis by the State of Georgia on September 21, 2011 has again placed us on the precipice of making this precise irreversible error.

Because there remains “reasonable doubt”; in fact, because there remains overwhelming doubt that Mr. Troy Davis is the one who murdered Officer Mark MacPhail [My prayers have been offered for his family.] I would like to offer to the Board of Pardons and Paroles a fail-proof opportunity to spare the life of a person, who most clearly meets the moral standard, regarding guilt or innocence, which you’ve set for yourselves. Because, I have sinned and fallen short of God’s expectations of me, and to avoid the risk of executing an innocent man, I respectfully offer to you the following alternative.

I hereby request that you take appropriate and immediate steps to prevent the execution of Troy Davis, currently scheduled for September 21, 2011.

If you are not willing to do so and/or if you are not willing to reconsider his case, I, MARVIN L. MORGAN, DO HEREBY REQUEST THAT YOU AUTHORIZE THE STATE OF GEORGIA TO TAKE MY LIFE INSTEAD OF THAT OF TROY DAVIS, AND ALLOW TROY TO BE SET FREE. I AM AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY TO BE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY SO THIS REQUEST MAY BE IMPLEMENTED.

Thank you very much for your positive consideration of this request.
