US Weapons Pour Into Israel

Despite reports of US weapons used in human rights violations in Gaza, another shipment has arrived and been unloaded in Israel. In January, Amnesty International along with other groups in Greece were able to divert and delay this shipment of arms, but on January 12, in the midst of the conflict, the ship disappeared from the radar near Greece. It reappeared March 23, traveling from Israel to the Ukraine.  The Pentagon confirmed that on March 22, the cargo ship unloaded 300 containers of munitions to the Israeli port Ashdod. There is not too much to add to the statement of Amnesty’s Brian Wood:

Legally and morally, this U.S. arms shipment should have been halted by the Obama administration given the evidence of war crimes resulting from military equipment and munitions of this kind used by the Israeli forces.

Even still, President Obama has committed to a 10-year contract with a 25% increase in military aid totaling around $30 billion. There must be an immediate cease of arms trade to Israel and all Palestinian armed groups or the risk of serious human rights violations continues. The US government clearly owes us some answers as to why the recent arms shipment was delivered.

  1. What a joke Amnesty International is. You call for an arms embargo against Israel and the Palestinians, but you ignore that along with Iran, 19 of the 21 members of the Arab League are in formally declared states of war with Israel, including Saudi Arabia, Syria. Iran, as well as these 19 countries, every single one of them a dictatorship ruled by secret police and torture, all of whom repeatedly come at the very bottom of the whole world in terms of human rights by your own reports, and collectively they have military budgets and arms imports far, far, outweighing Israel. As offensive weapons systems pour into these mid evil dictatorships by the tens of billions, Amnesty International makes no call for arms embargo against them.

Amnesty calls for an arms embargo against Israel, but not against Iran, Saudi Arabia or Syria, all of whom have massive armies, are in full declared states of war with Israel, have massive chemical and biological war programs aimed at killing every civilian in Israel and possibly soon atomic weapons as well.

When you demand one side in a war, Israel, be disarmed and not the others who are her main military threat, Saudi Arabia, Syria or Iran this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt you are completely 100% biased against Israel.

I know you will try to defend yourself from my complaint with the ridiculous false claim that because you also call for embargoes against Hamas and Hezbolla you cannot be biased against Israel.

Who are you trying to kid ? You know Hezbolla and Hamas are not the main military threat Israel faces. The main threats are Syria, Iran and Saudia Arabia who import many times as much weapons as Israel does and have armies far larger than Israels, but you don't call for arms embargoes against them !!

You call for an embargo against Israel for one reason only, because Amnesty's only goal is to see Israel disarmed and defenseless against the 10s of billions of annual Iranian, Saudi and Syrian military imports.

The inescapable conclusion one must draw from this is that the ultimate goal of Amnesty International is the destruction of the state of Israel and the deaths or expulsion of all its Jewish civilians because you have aligned yourselves as allies of the worst civil rights violators in the world (according to your own reports), with Syria and Iran , and are acting as "useful idiots" in furthering Iran and Syria's quest for military superiority over Israel by acting as a naive pressure group against imports to Israel, all the while that Iran and Syria and Saudi Arabia massively expand their offensive arms imports, which you never say a word about.

And please don't respond once again with the lie about how you are not biased against Israel because you call for embargo against the tiny Hezbollah and Hamas. There are more parties to the conflict than them. The other countries that are in formal states or war with Israel are also parties to the conflict, in fact the main parties. But you will of course just ignore this in your response and pretend that the conflict only involves Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah who you say should be embargoed, but according to the biased anti-Israel organization Amnesty International the 10s of billions of arms imports and nuclear weapons development by main military threats Israel faces, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iran are perfectly okay by you and should just be forgotten about.

  2. Judo Nimh is absolutely correct. Amnesty International has become nothing more than another in a long line of morally confused Leftist entities who couldn't tell right from wrong if it shoved a gun in their face. What a useless organization you've become, AI.

  3. Now I'm a supporter of Amnesty International and stipulate the following provisos:

    1. Israel is not always right and can err
    2. Every critique of Israel is not anti-semitism

    But

    3. There are many, many, many less complex, less nuanced situations of human suffering than Gaza in the world. Areas of medevel treatment of women, kid soldiers, sex trade, slavery, starvation, etc and etc due to direct consequence of human evil, greed and the like.

Gaza is complicated. Like all military operations, no such thing as "surgical" or clean, civilian casualites will occur. That is why war violnece is bad.

HOWEVER, see Amnesty International's message below. No nuance, no balance, just bad, evil Israel gong out of nowhere to kill women and children.

No mention of suicide bombers, Gazans hiding in schools, hospitals to ensure maximum civillian harm………

This is right out of the UN and Jimmy Carter playbook.

How about China, North Korea, Zaire, etc and etc?/????

Of all the "gross human rights violations" in the world today, Isreael v Gaza is way down the list in terms of ease of assigning blame, fixing and untangling eons of hate.

Arabs in Israel have more rights/protections than those in any other mid east country, how about our $4 billion year in aid to that paragon of virtue, Egypt?

Ironic, I never feel more Jewish or Pro Israel as when put on the defensive.

  4. I have been a supporter of Amnesty International and other progressive groups for decades. I have also been an ardent supporter of Israel since I was a child. I have prayed for Israeli/Palestinian peace, and for justice to be done for the sake of all sides in the Middle East.
The recent Gaza offensive upset me because of the Palestinian loss of life, and I hope that Israel, being a democracy and having a moral foundation, is up to a round of self-examination.
However, I never forget that Israel is surrounded by very hostile neighbors who are given comfort by the worldwide outpouring of prejudice against this always vulnerable country.
I will not revoke my membership in AIUSA, but I will never endorse the tone of the article, "US Weapons Pour Into Israel."

  5. Judo Nimh, Bob, Bill and Eric are all among the dwindling minority who are taken in by pro-Israeli-government propaganda. Israel has one of the world's most powerful armies, and has not hesitated to use it against civilians in Gaza in the latest of its aggressions in its region. Israel's expansionist policies are a danger to the region and the world, and its army has consistently carried out human rights abuses and policies that discriminate against non-Jews, causing Israel's isolation and ironically fomenting anti-Semitism. Thanks AI for taking a stand. It's all the more important now that Israel's new Foreign Minister opposes any kind of peace agreement and himself lives in an illegal settlement in violation of the 4th Geneva Convention.

And don't forget Israel's nuclear weapons, which are a source of instability and indeed are an encouragement to Iran to develop its own nukes. Let's call for a nuclear-weapons–free Middle East along the lines of South America.

  7. Thank you for the information. I researched white phosphorus on the web. I don't approve of poisoning anyone, especially not civilians, no matter who is doing it to whom. I think the posting wouldn't have provoked as many negative comments if it had been more balanced. Israel is far from the only culprit and the US use of the substance is far from beyond reproach. Why is the US making and selling large amounts to ANY country? Profit. Bribes to promote US foreign policy. Not exactly ethical watchdogs, our government officials, are they?

  8. You have such a hostlile article against Israel that I am surprised that with all the issues in the world you would concentrate on the only democracy in the middle east. With all the human rights events against woman and children and men in every Arab country every day, how could you single out Israel for such a rabid article and attack? I have supported Amnesty International for years, but you have crossed a line for me this time in this last campaign.

  9. Judo Nimh is absolutely correct. Amnesty International has become nothing more than another in a long line of morally confused Leftist entities who couldn’t tell right from wrong if it shoved a gun in their face. What a useless organization you’ve become, AI.

  10. Thank you AI for being one of few organizations willing to stand for human rights even when it is unpopular to do so. Please do not cave to the pressures of powerful lobbies and angry readers, and continue to stand for justice. I urge everyone to check out Jewish Voice for Peace, a great group which recently held a very informative conference call with a brave Shministim. Peace prospects do look dim with Netanyahu and Lieberman in charge, although I hope all Israelis will not be blamed and punished for this as the Palestinians were collectively punished for electing Hamas. There are still many in Israel who oppose the occupation, and the young Shministim are a great example of the change that can come from within.

  14. What a breath of fresh air to read these comments and find people who feel the same way. Amnesty is being swayed by the lefties and are going after the easy targets, democracies with free press and enough political control and wealth to not have terrorist factions. Gee whiz guys, I can read Al Jazeera too. this is not what I donate my money for.

It is too bad that Amnesty does not focus more on the people in the more forgotten parts of the world.

  15. You have to hold everyone to the same standard. The US gives millions to Palestinians. It is so obviously one sided and racist to say only Israel is guilty as the rockets are fired from hospital rooftops by hamas in Gaza. Amnesty international should look at itself and ask the hard questions like what alternatives are there for Israel instead of spewing more ignorant hate.

  23. Wow, either there are some truely ignorant people here or Israel public relations is on the major offensive, some seriously biased bullcrap. Israel is a racist nation run by ultra right facists and is murdering innocent people and stealing land… do that to my family and I would fight too. Israeli propaganda!!!

  25. It is interesting how the IDF goes out of its way to avoid civilian casualties probably more than any other deffense forces in the world, specificaly moving door to door to weed out individual terrorists as opposed to blanket bombings and you choose to publish a story without showing the overwhelming evidence you claim exists. I think the selective human rights violations you choose to publish are misguided. Perhaps AI would prefer to have the only democratic nation in a sea of dictatorships perish thereby assuring human rights violations to continue in the region for generations.

  26. Hello,

I'm doing research on terrorism, and I've put together a pre-survey questionnaire that I'm circulating in order to get feedback on what a non-biased (non-western, non-white) survey might look like. The final survey will go out later this year.

The survey can be accessed at johnmaszka.com/SURVEY.html

Would you post it, and possibly circulate it? I’m very interested in incorporating the views of women, non-whites, and people living outside of America and Western Europe.

    I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!
    Take care,

    John Maszka

  27. Agree with Judo Nimh's well written critique. AI needs to jettison its anti-Israel political agenda and focus on its core mission of protecting political prisoners everywhere.

  29. I used to support AI back in the days when it stood for protection of victims of torture and repressive political regimes. This latest in a spate of anti-Israel propaganda from AI is just another reminder of how AI has lost its way and been reduced to the level of the rest of the mindless lefties who take as solid "evidence" anything they hear that is anti-Israel. Israel — like every other nation at war — makes mistakes. However, it is best to consider the source when assessing vehement attacks on any person or entity. When the reports of casualties and "war crimes" that came out of Gaza can be traced to Hamas and its supporters, how much validity should they be given? And has AI become so blinded by its anti-Israel bias that it doesn't understand that Hamas and Hezbollah are terrorist organizations? What next? Will we hear more impassioned drivel from AI that attacks by Al Qaeda and the Taliban are the efforts of "freedom fighters" to achieve independence from the evil empires of the West? If AI seriously wants to help innocent civilians, let them look to Darfur, Somalia, and a dozen other places where the situation is clear and not clouded by 60+ years of passion and prejudice emanating from the nations of the Arab Middle East — among the most outrageous violators of human rights in the world today. Thanks again to Judo Nimh for his eloquent response to this rabid and mindless attack by AI.

  33. A recent e-mail from alerts@takeaction.amnestyusa.org contained the following statement :
" *** Yes we want a full embargo. But we need to be smart and push them one step at a time. ***"

This real motive is in the e-mail message but is not shown on the website.

I am one of many ex-supporters and contributors to AI who was unable to continue to be a supporter because of AI's obvious anti-Israel bias. So sad to see an organization with such good motives and good works being hijacked!

  34. I agree with You Michael and I think above responses (10 out of 17) are NOT by ignorant people. It is impossible for one with access to Internet to be so uniformed or misguided. Tactics of changing subject, blaming everybody else for supposedly bigger crimes, labeling people as "antisemitic" or "self hatred Jews" are well known methods of Israeli PR campaign.

  35. Any explanation why Amnesty International will not call for arms boycotts against all Israel's enemies surrounding it and maintaining states of war with it. What about Syria, what about Iran, what about the 19 members of the Arab league, all of them dictatorships at the bottom of Amnesty's own reports on human rights, that maintain massive armies and full declared states of war with Israel.

Is it okay according to Amnesty International for these self declared enemy's of Israel to continue to import tens of billions of dollars of offensive weapons systems while Israel is to be left defenseless? That is a fair policy according to Amnesty International?

This is a simple question, Amnesty easily could prove its self unbiased by calling for a complete boycott of weapons sales to ALL the parties to the Arab Israeli conflict, including Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, but Amnesty refuses to do this, and just calls for Israel and few terrorist organizations to be boycotted while allowing the vast majority of Israel's self declared enemies, enemies who have massive armies, to continue to import all the arms they want.

    I demand an explanation.

  39. Judo Nimh,

What offensive weapons do we have? You must be talking about all the "toys" the Gulf states buy when they don't even have armies worthy of such name.

You must face the fact that there is no country in the Middle East with the huge amount of offensive weapons that Israel has, on top of its mass-murder nuclear weapons. Because Israel knows it has forced itself in the region and as Ben-Gurion himself explained decades ago, there is no other option for Israel but to become a garrison violent militaristic state in order to survive its abuses and systematic violations of the people it has conquered. Israel does not only import superior deadly weapons from the US, it is one of the leading exporter of weapons on the world.

Arab countries do not have enough armies or weapons to confront Israel for its blatant breach of basic Palestinian (ie natives) rights and the many UN resolutions that go with it. If they did, Israel wouldn't go this far conquering that much land and displacing so many innocent people to make place for fanatics born in the other side of the world.

The internal problems that Arab countries have (including the issue of women rights, etc) is our business.

Our governments, that we don't necessary always support, are still legitimate and enjoy relative legitimacy in the eyes of people.

A dictatorship is the one that rules by force another people half the size of its population, and that would be apartheid Israel.

AI needs to be more vocal against this state that has killed more children than any other government in the region.

  40. In the last 25 years ( first and second intifada and Gaza war) the total number of Palestinians to die at Israeli hands ( most of them military aged males and armed) was about 9000 according to Btselem. About 2000 Jews ( mostly women and children) were killed by Palestinians during this period

The currently ruling Syrian regime murdered more Arabs, up to 30,000, in a single day on February 2, 1982, than all the Palestinians that have died combined from the last 25 years at the hands of Israel. This occurred in Syria during the Hama massacre (Arabic: مجزرة حماة‎). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hama_massacre.

Similarly, the currently ruling Jordanian regime murdered more Palestinians, more than 10,000 in a single month, September 1970, than all the Palestinians that have died in the first and second intifada and Gaza war combined from the last 25 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_September_in_J

During the Iran-Iraq war in which over a million Muslims were killed by other Muslims, the Iranian Basiji human wave attacks carried out by Iranian children to clear mine fields which killed an estimated 100,000 Iranian children.

Saudi Arabia is the foremost purchaser of US armaments in the world at over 1.5 billion dollars annually. The Saudi Air force has more F-15s than the Israeli Air force, and has recently completed an £4.4bn deal with BAE for 72 Eurofighter Typhoons. The Syrian army regulars are estimated at 215,000, with an additional 300,000 reserves, with over 4,100 Soviet-built tanks including some 1,700 advanced T-72/72Ms. The Armed forces of Iran are about 945,000, with thousands of of long range ground to ground long range rockets that can hit Israel.

Many Arab countries as well as Iran are known to posses large quantities of chemical and biological weapons. In fact the first use of chemical weapons since World War I was by Egypt on the defenseless civilians of north Yemen during the Yemen-Egyptian war of 1963-67, in which many thousands of Yemenis were killed by phosgene and mustard gas dropped by the Egyptian Air Force.

The Syrian Army is estimated at over In 1985 army regulars were estimated at 396,000, with an additional 300,000 reserve

Arab countries do not have enough armies or weapons to confront Israel for its blatant breach of basic Palestinian (ie natives) rights and the many UN resolutions that go with it. If they did, Israel wouldn’t go this far conquering that much land and displacing so many innocent people to make place for fanatics born in the other side of the world.

The internal problems that Arab countries have (including the issue of women rights, etc) is our business.

Our governments, that we don’t necessary always support, are still legitimate and enjoy relative legitimacy in the eyes of people.

A dictatorship is the one that rules by force another people half the size of its population, and that would be apartheid Israel.

AI needs to be more vocal against this state that has killed more children than any other government in the region.

In the last 25 years ( first and second intifada and Gaza war) the total number of Palestinians to die at Israeli hands ( most of them military aged males and armed) was about 9000 according to Btselem. 45. Judo Nimh,

Please stop making stuff up. If Israel only killed combatants, the world will not be often condemning it and protesting its blatant violations of the Geneva conventions and its inhumane policies that have kept millions of innocent natives in open air prisons for over 40 years. You should be ashamed of yourself for defending such state that symbolizes, in the eyes of many outside the US, injustice and systematic abuse of the rights of weaker natives.

Btselem never published the fabrications that you wrote. Btselem has often protested the abuses of the Israeli military and its military occupation.

As to the victims of some Arab governments, what makes you think that we support such acts like you do with Israeli ones? Israel killed close to 20,000 Lebanese in 1982 in one of the most brutal revenge attacks.

If you count the other Arabs Israel killed in the other wars, it is in the hundreds of thousands. The Israeli army even shot down a Libyan civilian airline over Egypt (113 dead) in 1973.

You must surely understand why Arabs are not friendly to your beloved violent colonial state.

This state, since its conquest of Palestine, has thrived on violence, on killing Arabs and subjecting weaker people and undermining their basic right to their native lands.

We are not going to forget this and we are going to teach our children.

The Saudi AirForce is run by the US Airforce.

  47. US Weapons will stop pouring into Israel when Hamas is no longer a tool being used by Iran to "WIPE ISRAEL OF THE FACE OF THE EARTH".

    Keep blaming the victims.

BOTTOMLINE – Hamas is the AGRESSOR in this conflict. Hamas uses civilian shields.

I for one support the USA efforts to arm and defend a sovereign nation from unprovoked attacks.

fire and suicide attacks since years. Why not mention that Hamas and Hezbollah use their civilians as human shields not caring about their lives but

Israel left the Gaza Strip 2005 . Since Hamas and other PA organizations could

  52. Nobody denies that the human problem of the Palestinians is sad but it

You have the right to help the Palestinians but one can't be impartial by
ignoring some ESSENTIAL FACTS about some terrorist organisations :

THEIR WILL TO DESTROY ISRAEL ( See PLO , Hamas Charter not speking from Hezbollah).

THE CONTINUOUS AND DELIBERATE VIOLENCE ( rockets and suicide attacks) against Israeli civilians even after Israel left the Gaza Strip

The USE AS HUMAN SHIELD of the Gazan civilians by Hamas and Hezbollah .
NO ONE CIVILIAN would have beeen killed without attacks against Israel.

Never heard about UN partition of Palestine ,1947?

  57. These blogs, like most blogs, are nonsense. None of these writers is going to convince the others, no matter how meritorious their views. However, the real issue is one no one dares to face. The US Constitution's first amendment separation clause. The supreme court has found this to mean that government can make no law that favors one religious group over another, nor otherwise affects the religious lives of citizens. Yet since colonial days American settlers have insisted on treating religion as if it were a shadow government despite the clear implications of the first amendment mandating separation of church (or temple) and state.

Whether the aid is to any religious dominated state, whether it is Muslim or Zionist, is a violation of the fundamentals of American democracy. There is no legitimate legislative grounds for American citizens to favor any faith, whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Taoist, Hindu. There is a very strong legislative ground for them to refrain from any national act or policy in violation of the constitution that is the basis of their democracy. In fact, the reality is that like mutiny and sedition, a citizen's violation of that principle is as serious as an open act of treason. The government's violation of it is a many times greater breach not only of constitutiona law but of a breach of the public trust and attack on the very foundation of the state.

We all know what the history is. At least those of us that can read. Great injustices have been done on our watch: perhaps some of the worst and greatest in the history of civilization. They cannot be undone without horrendous consequences for millions of often naive or unthinking people.

Obviously this has been a convenience and opportunistic 'ride' for them, but they must realize the World is watching especially when American elections are so focused on the "Jewish" vote, so pandering seems inevitable but unhealthy for Americans and the rest of the World.

Isreal is fighting for what they think is their God given land, the arab states use Palestine for criminal elements that psuedo supply the Palestinians with false hope and false security. Please consider what the World feels..

Finally one should ask WHY the Palestinians are in such a situation .
