You Have Been Sentenced to…Paralysis?

After a violent fight broke out between two brothers two years ago in Saudi Arabia; one of the brothers was sentenced to seven months in prison during a trial where he did not receive legal representation. But the judge is thinking of adding another punishment — paralysis.

When one brother allegedly attacked the other with a cleaver, the victim was left paralyzed and in turn requested that the punishment for the aggressor resemble his injuries.  The judge in Tabuk, in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, has contacted several hospitals, inquiring as to their capacity to damage the man’s spinal cord in such a way to mimic the injuries of the victim.

One hospital reportedly said it would be possible to medically administer the injury at the same place on the spinal cord as the damage the man is alleged to have caused his victim. The King Khalud Hospital released a medical report saying they could injure the spinal cord with a nerve stimulant causing paralysis .

We have urged the Saudi authorities to not deliberately paralyze the man as punishment as it is a retributive punishment resembling torture.

Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment are absolutely prohibited under international law and violates the United Nations Convention against Torture to which Saudi Arabia is a state party.

Saudi Arabia must not sentence this man to deliberate paralysis and adhere to international law regarding torture and inhumane punishment.

  1. While certainly the injuries inflicted in the attack are horrible, retaliation is inhumane, violates international law, and will not undo the wrong that was done.

  2. I can' t understand this judge??? Doesn't he have generosity inside his heart? Or doesn't he have intelligence to calculate (matematically) the costs of his decision??? 2 persons of the same family without phisical conditions to work? Why will he condemn all the familly to live miserably??? More 2 handicapped in world is not necessary.

  5. Intentionally crippling someone is sadistic. Only sadists would consider such a thing. Sadists aren't insane… They just get a huge ego boost knowing they can cause immense suffering. Big pain = big boost. Torture = Ecstasy. It's all about Power. An eye for an eye may be a good deterrent for crime, but what society wants to be governed by narcissistic sadists who create and execute cruel and sadistic laws? We have evil at work in the U S, too, but the Saudi government takes the cake.

  6. Now this is totally unacceptable! when we are ill and not feeling healthy, we go to the hospital for treatment to get better. This statement by the hospital in quotes "The King Khalud Hospital released a medical report saying they could injure the spinal cord with a nerve stimulant causing paralysis is totally chaos!! and surely chaos will reign and sovereign forever for that statement if such statement do not stop, and i tell you God will never allow his people to suffer so chaos will reign and sovereign on the just, so let no one think chaos will be shared and a deed to everybody.

If hospital are talking this way, then on the contrary it means they inflict suffering on people and most wrong doings in the hospital were not human mistakes justified but mistakes that were intended and meant to cause harm evidently using the media as a common medium to communicate a line of pictures and comments of it was a sheer mistake because of inadequate resources e.t.c to before warn is to before harm and patience is a virtue

And what about the doctors which worked on that report! They have to be announced criminal!

  13. Do you people forget that we are not living in this part of the world? This is not American culture, even though it should be. I have no problem with an eye for an eye. If you believe in the bible, you should not have a problem with this. I don't care for religion at all, so I don't have an issue with this at all.

And just remember that this is not our country. What happens in America? Lethal injection, electric chair, hangings, and lets not forget the guy who requested death by fire squad recently. Who really cares? Are you going to lose sleep over this? Once this leaves the news everyone against or for it will forget about it within a week.

I've have always been down with an eye for an eye, ever since I was a little kid. I think we should put criminals in a stadium and fill the stadium with people and watch the eye for an eye incident. It's only fair. If someone murdered my wife I would want to murder that person in front of spectators the same way she was murdered with people watching, regardless if it brought back my wife. That is not the point!!!

Just remember that these "laws" are not new, they have been around for many many years. If this country would execute all the murderers and rapists and child molesters in this country right away we wouldn't have overcrowding issues and wasted tax dollars. I say cut his chord and then he will know how his brother feels. This guy obviously trued to kill him with the weapon of choice. So cut his spinal chord.

  14. This sounds like the purest form of justice I've ever heard of. If a man who tries to kill another man paralyzes him, the attacker should suffer the same fate as his victim. It's hardcore, no doubt about that, but I think one of the reasons violent crime flourishes in the U.S. is that the state inflicted punishment is like a slap on the wrist when compared to the grotesque nature of some of the crimes committed. I don't know about the Saudi's standard of evidence, although I'm sure it's far less than our "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard. But if guilt can be proven unequivocally, and the guilty person's victim has suffered some cruel and inhumane consequence at the hands of their attacker — eg. blindness, physical mutilation, paralysis — why should their attacker be spared of the same fate when they didn't give one iota of thought to the suffering of their victim?

  16. This story is just crazy. Actually, wouldn't they have trouble finding a doctor actually willing to go through with the procedure?
