UN Security Council: action needed on Sri Lanka

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to brief the Security Council tomorrow on Sri Lanka.  As with past sessions on Sri Lanka, it will be a closed-door session and won’t even be held in the Council area, since Sri Lanka isn’t on the Security Council’s agenda, as the Council president recently explained.

Amnesty International today said that the Security Council should stop discussing Sri Lanka informally and instead should address Sri Lanka’s human rights crisis in a formal session resulting in strong action being taken by the Council.  The Sri Lankan government is still denying aid agencies full access to civilians displaced by the recent fighting who are being held in military-controlled internment camps.  The Sri Lankan government recently reconquered the remaining territory held by the opposition Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who fought for over 26 years for an independent state for the Tamil minority in the north and east of the island.  Both sides were responsible for gross human rights abuses during the conflict.  Nearly 300,000 people were displaced in the last few months by the fighting.  Amnesty is urging the Security Council to demand that the Sri Lankan government provide full access for aid agencies to the displaced civilians.

AI also called on the Security Council to demand an international investigation into the abuses of human rights and humanitarian law committed by both the Sri Lankan government forces and the LTTE during the recent fighting.  That call was echoed today in Geneva by the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, who repeated her earlier support for an independent international inquiry.  The Sri Lankan Ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva responded to her remarks by rejecting an international inquiry, saying that any process of accountability would be handled by Sri Lankan institutions.  You should also be aware that yesterday, a Sri Lankan minister told reporters that the government had no plans to investigate the reported deaths of thousands of civilians during the recent fighting.  So what kind of accountability will we ever see if it’s left to the Sri Lankan government?

We don’t have time to waste.  AI is still getting disturbing reports of family members searching fruitlessly for relatives who were forcibly separated from them at government-controlled crossing points after the families managed earlier this year to flee the war zone.  Given the thousands of human rights violations committed by the security forces, we’re very concerned that the people taken away by the government forces could be at serious risk of torture and enforced disappearances.  We need the Security Council to act now.

  1. In the past, many Aid workers entered the so called Territory of the Tamil Tigers in the name of helping the civilians trapped in the area by the LTTE – (As we all know, only very few civilians were allowed to cross over to government controlled areas by the LTTE and most of them were LTTE members who came on Suicide missions). However, there was infomation that these people were not helping the people, but the LTTE instead. Once the Sri Lankan army liberated the area, it was clear with evidence what they had been up to. NGO's and other so called helping organizations have helped one of the most ruthless terrorist organizations in the world to build submarines and air crafts…

HENCE, could it be justified allowing for such people to enter these areas ?? The innocent people in these areas have suffered enough don't you think ?? At least now, let the democratically elected Sri Lankan Government to take things to their hands. The government has ensured the safety of the innocent civilians and ensure that they would get the same freedom that the Tamil civilians in the other parts of the island enjoy.

Sri Lanka had pleaded from the International for at least 20 of the 26 years to get involved to stop the bloodshed by the LTTE and to force them to give up the idea of dividing this peaceful land – What did they do ?? NOTHING but cuddle the tigers and let them collect money in their own land !! So, what's wrong with the Sri lankan government taking things to their own hands and finishing it off once and for all ??

I would not rule out the possibility of Civilians getting killed during the war as we saw in Iraq, Afghanistan and recently in Gaza when Israel attacked. As we all saw, the LTTE shot at the Civilians who tried to flee their bloody claws. In any war situation, a few civilian would die to ensure that the rest would live in peace ya? However, I could pledge that the Sri Lankan government was so much committed to liberating the innocent civilians that they would have not harm a single hair of an innocent Tamil civilian.

The UN should understand that this is an internal issue that was purely neglected by the International community until GOSL began the fight to end the LTTE Menace. With the current recession the world is facing and many people starving to death and people being thrown out of houses, I think it would be better if the UN people start fighting for their rights than mess up a settled situation.

  2. Re: Sri Lanka must be investigated for human rights violations and war crimes against Tamils.

I hope and pray many like minded governments of the world would seek a just justice to the long suffering Tamils in Sri Lanka by investigating Sri Lanka for human rights violations and war crimes against them.

According to aid groups, more than 44 per cent of 300,000 the people in the at least 40 concentration camps are children. Tens of thousands of those killed in the final days of Sri Lanka ’s cruel military attacks, 45 per cent were children. All in all, Tamil children were disproportionately and deliberately targeted by the state armed machineries in the war, which was perceived as the ‘war on terror’. These camps are out of reach to the aid agencies including ICRC and UN as Sri Lanka enforced blockade strictly imposed.

Sri Lanka continue to pry out, Tamil young women, men and children in very large numbers from these concentration camps in the absence of any independent media, aid groups, or independent monitors. There are reports coming from CNN today that nearly 10,000 suspects have been rounded up and being sent to unknown locations, their fates unknown. This is an outrageous course of action being carried out without international witnesses and accountability and the civilized world must not allow. Sri Lanka continues to deny access to these camps to UN agencies and ICRC as required by Geneva Convention act.

Sri Lanka never in the history demonstrated in the past or does it have the political will for reconciliation in the post war situation in Sri Lanka . Instead, it always practiced scorch earth and ethnic cleansing policy towards its Tamil citizens. According to Telegraph UK, Sri Lankan government has been accused of launching a campaign of "ethnic cleansing" in Tamil Areas.

The world should and must recognize the legitimate political grievances of the Tamil people on the basis of self-determination and facilitate a permanent and peaceful solution for Tamils to live in peace, freedom with dignity and ruling themselves like any other people in the world.

Sri Lanka’s branch of the French-based aid organization, Handicap International, said that close to 30,000 Tamil civilians have been seriously maimed in the final few days of the military offensive in the former ‘No Fire Zone’ in northern Sri Lanka. More than 300,000 Tamil civilians are being kept in more than 40 concentrations camps under inhumane conditions. They are enclosed by barbed wire fences without free movement and are under permanent watch by armed Sri Lankan military personnel.

The world must demand from Sri Lanka for an immediate full access to international organizations and observers, including aid agencies, human rights organizations and journalists, to the respective areas to monitor the situation and to provide safety against gross human rights violations.

  5. After committing atrocities worse than Nazi forces, with the heavy weaponry from all international stakeholders, especially from those with war criminal records themselves such as China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela and many others, the Sri Lankan regime has no right to say 'it is an internal issue'.

The United Nations is formed to investigate human rights violations committed by countries that call themselves practicing democracy. Sri Lanka has been discriminating the tamil speaking minority for the past 60+ years. The co-chairs were involved in finding a just solution for the crisis. Mass killing of 20,000 innocent civilians within 24 hours is definitely a crime worse than 'GENOCIDE'.

The UN should intervene to save the rest of those innocent civilians. They are help in barb-wired nazi-type internment camps. There's sever lack of food, medicine and all basic needs. Children are being abducted, killed or raped as I pen this message. No international media has been allowed to witness the holocaust in that part of the land for quite some time.

The news that over 20,000 innocent civilians were killed by the military onslaught of the Sri Lankan army has shocked the world, but not world leaders like President Obama, Prime Minister Brown, Prime Minister Steven Harper, President Sarkozy and Chancellor Merkel. For, they knew exactly what was going to happen and what is happening now.

How right Albert Einstein was when he said, “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of those who are evil but because of those who don’t do anything about it”.

“When genocide is happening,” said candidate Obama, so eloquently during the second presidential debate, “when ethnic cleansing is happening somewhere around the world and we stand idly by, that diminishes us.”

The United Nations has yet again proved under the current leadership, that it is an ineffective organisation in conflict resolution and prevention of genocide.

It is a great shame for India to have had a hand in the mass killings of Tamils. The other countries that had helped Sri Lanka militarily do not have the best human rights record in the world and their moral values proved to be questionable. India produced the greatest of men on earth, the great Mahatma Gandhi.

The politicians who do not follow Gandhian principles are not worthy to hang his photograph in their place of work. Mahinda Rajapaksa has admitted that he fought India’s war, but as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces and Executive President of the country, he is the one who would be facing the War Crimes Tribunal, even if he pleads insanity.

The U.S., the EU and other forward thinking democracies, should use their financial leverage and force an independent investigation on the Sri Lankan government for war crimes. The resolution passed in the United Nations Human Rights Council on 27 May to allow Sri Lanka to investigate itself is a laughing matter.

The Sri Lankan economy is in the doldrums because of mismanagement, disproportionate military spend and corruption after Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government came into power.

The U.S. and Western governments, having stood idly by when the massacre of innocent civilians by the Sri Lankan State took place, could now show the world that they are taking some action against the perpetrators. This should take the form of punitive economic measures.

The U.S. Secretary of State has indicated that the IMF loan for nearly $2 billion would be stopped or delayed.

The EU is known to be considering the withdrawal of GSP Plus concession worth nearly $2 billion subject to investigation into Sri Lankan government’s human rights abuses. Economic sanctions and curtailment of bi-lateral trade should also play a part. The Commonwealth should suspend Sri Lanka’s membership subject to independent international investigation into war crimes.

Tamils in Sri Lanka have been discriminated by successive governments since independence in 1948. It is widely acknowledged that what is happening in Sri Lanka is genocide. The genocide of a people means that the security of those people cannot be left to the perpetrating government itself. It then follows that some form of separation and self determination for the Tamils in the long term is unavoidable.

It is about time for those who said “never again” in Darfur, to take their “responsibility to protect” seriously and substantiate their words with immediate firm action.

We wish to stress the need for more actions from Canada than words. There should be more initiatives than during Tsunami time. Canada may take the lead to dispatch the DART team to help those in need and introduce an effective mechanism to save those young civilians being taken away in the name of 'terrorists' and got persecuted and/or killed.

    Justice delayed is justice denied!

  7. The International Red Cross (ICRC) aid group and United Nations were prevented by Sri Lanka from having direct access to the 40 interment camps which were setup by the Sri Lankan government for over 300,000 Tamil civilians who were herded by Sri Lankan armed forces during Vanni military operaion.

These civilians were escaped the relentless heavy weaponry attacks on them by the Sri Lankan forces for the past many months. It is also reported that the conflict zone still unvisited by the international observers, aid workers, UN staff or any independent bodies. At least three government doctors who worked in the conflict zone during the recent military onslaughts on the area by the Sri Lanka have been treating tens of thousands wounded and sick civilians in immensely trying conditions also have been reporting the true nature of state enforced war crimes against its Tamil citizens. ICRC also reported at least more than a dozens of their local aid workers are missing after the military operation in Vanni last weekend.

“We need to have access, I repeat, total access, without the least let or hindrance — for the UN, for non-governmental organisations and for the Red Cross,” Elisabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said.

BBC news service and many other news services also reporting that, a number of children in camps for people displaced by Sri Lanka 's Tamil conflict have been abducted, international human rights groups say. The Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers is an umbrella group of global organisations which includes Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. It said it had received verified reports of abductions from camps in and around Vavuniya in the north. The tragedy is Sri Lanka conducted a massive slaughter of tens of thousands of Tamil civilians, which includes hundreds of children in a terrible war without witness still continuing with total annihilation of Tamil decent in Sri Lanka.

More than 300,000 civilians including tens of thousands of children are being put into the so-called welfare internment camps what many observers call “concentration camps”. International community should demand immediate unhindered access and monitors to these camps. The Sri Lanka should and must be pressured by the world to allow unhindered access to these civilians by the aid workers, aid groups and independent media immediately.

These over 300,000 civilians just not need food, medicines, and cloths they need to have a right to their human dignity and to hope for the future. Sri Lanka should be condemned in a strongest possible term by the member states for the tens of thousands of civilians killed which includes thousands of children in most violent way.

  8. The Tamils are being killed every day and UN is still watching the show, with out taking any action. United Nations should start its investigation in Srilanka. Srilanka is not going to do an investigation, non of the state terrorist have ever done an investigation on their self. What ever United Nations saying is fake excuses. Srilanka willingly killed 20 000 Tamils just in 48 hours and you expect that country to do an investigation this is a Drama.

Vanni camps every day young boys and girls are being taken away and raped and killed, this got to be stopped. United Nations should work more more harder.. Mr. Ban you better Ban Srilanka. The Tamils and as a Foreigner I feel Mr Ban ki moon is acting. In the back door Mr ban is supporting Srilankas state terrorism. In the Security council they couldnt do anythink then what they going to do in close door, they just going have lunch or dinner for two hours in close door.

I was an AIDE worker, people like Roshan just writing what ever he thinks. I think Roshan dont know what NGO means and what AIDE work means.

These over 300,000 civilians just not need food, medicines, and cloths they need to have a right to their human dignity and to hope for the future. Sri Lanka should be condemned in a strongest possible term by the member states for the tens of thousands of civilians killed which includes thousands of children in most violent way.

Sri Lanka declared as war ended already what was perceived as ‘war on terror’, the world should and must force Sri Lanka for unhindered access and independent monitors to those concentration camps.

Abductions, Rapes and Ill treatments of women and children are being reported in these internment camps of Tamils in northern Sri Lanka after war ended; World should not ignore these crimes against humanity by Sri Lanka.

The world should and must recognize the legitimate political grievances of the Tamil people on the basis of self-determination and facilitate a permanent and peaceful solution for Tamils to live in peace, freedom with dignity and ruling themselves like any other people in the world.

  11. NGO’s and other so called helping organizations have helped one of the most ruthless terrorist organizations in the world to build submarines and air crafts…

HENCE, could it be justified allowing for such people to enter these areas ?? The innocent people in these areas have suffered enough don’t you think ?? At least now, let the democratically elected Sri Lankan Government to take things to their hands. The government has ensured the safety of the innocent civilians and ensure that they would get the same freedom that the Tamil civilians in the other parts of the island enjoy.

Sri Lanka had pleaded from the International for at least 20 of the 26 years to get involved to stop the bloodshed by the LTTE and to force them to give up the idea of dividing this peaceful land – What did they do ?? NOTHING but cuddle the tigers and let them collect money in their own land !! So, what’s wrong with the Sri lankan government taking things to their own hands and finishing it off once and for all ??

  12. I hope that the UN will listen to testimony from the Tamil victims and Tamil eye witnesses as well in any investigation. So far in the conflict, the Tamils have been silenced from being heard and only government representatives or Tamils working for the government or who have been selected by the government to speak have been allowed to speak. Sri Lankan Tamils are generally terrified to speak critically of the Sri Lankan government because they or their relatives disappear when they do. In the current climate when the entire population of the Vanni is held in Nazi style concentration camps where rape ans torture is commonplace and where 13,000 have already dissapeared, possibly exterminated on suspicion of being LTTE members or association with the LTTE. If some sort of anonymity is not provided for those testifying, there is no chance of a fair and balanced investigation, as the only testimony that is presented will be what the Sri Lankan government wants to be presented.

  13. Dear Sinhalese,

I know you are trying your best to hide and alter the truth. Stop calling the Sri Lankan government democratically elected government. Its a government elected by majority Sinhalese. If they want to represent Sinhalese, by all mean, let them represent Sinhalese.

Please leave us alone, we tried and we can no longer live under your rule. You Sinhalese are treating us as slaves and subhuman beings.

We have the capacity to govern ourselves.

    Dear International Community,

Please help us. Save us from this barbaric Sinhala people.

    Dear Obama,

The two-state solution that you proposed for Israel and Palestine will work for Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam as well.

    Thank you,

    Siva

  14. UN, especially Ban Ki-moon and Vijay Nambiyar have abetted cold-blooded killing of Tamils in tens of thousands. If these two have any self-respect for themselves, they should immediately resign and the law enforcement should comment an investigation on the part of these leaches immediately.

That's the only way to restore any confidence and credibility to the UN.

  15. Roshan said in his blog that the NGO's and other humanitarian organizations were helping LTTE and let the newly elected Sri Lankan Democratic Party to take things to their hands. What kind of an argument is this…

You are complaining that the NGO's and other humanitarian organizations are helping LTTE. This is a joke! Also, you were saying that let the Sri Lankan Democratic Party to take things to their hands… Is Sri Lanka the only (so called) 'Democratic' country in the whole world? There are other countries too and some countries would like to know what went wrong in the war? What is wrong with allowing them into Sri Lanka?

It is not an internal issue anymore. There are so many displaced Tamil people, who live in countries like Australia, England, Canada, Netherland, Germany, France, India, etc and most of them saying that they want Tamil Eelam. These displaced people have been telling the tru story to the whole world and they will never stop until their voices are heard. It is the people who lived/live in those areas to determine what we want. It is the Tamils who lived/live in the North and East who can say whether they want to have one country or two countries, not you or the Sri Lankan Government.

Think of this analogy. You did not want the English to rule our land, so you (the Sinhalese and Tamils) got married and you fought together to send the English out from our land. At that time, the Tamils thought that the marriage could go along way. But apparently, it was not. So, now the Tamils are asking divorce. Why are you not giving it? Just let them go and have their own life? Why are you trying to control them? Who are you to control them?

If the Sri Lankan government is not guilty then let them face the War crime investigation? Let the independant media and independant human rights organizations in and let them find out the true story? Why are you not letting them in? You are saying, every one in the whole world is bad people and the Sri Lankan Government is the only good person? Isn't it a joke?

In courts, the procecutors will be asking qustions to anyone (whether or not they are guilty) that they would like to cross examine. If Sri Lankan government is not guilty, then why not face the cross examine?

If you are accusing NGO's that they are supporting the LTTE, the Sri Lankan Government could have said that during the war. At that time, the Sri Lankan Government was saying that it was too dangerous to go to the War Zone. But now you are saying something different? Does not make any sense?

The people in the North and East have already suffered a lot. Please help them from the Sri Lankan Government attrocities and give them justice.

If you are a true human being, even before you write anything, go find out the truth for yourself and then start wring. Do not just believe everything that your government say…

  16. According to Amnesty International, there are 300,000 Tamils IDPs are in the detention centers of Sri Lanka, and 80,000 of these are children and 30,000 of these are disabled people, resulted from the war.

Due to the mass number of the people suffering in these camps, these camps definitely requires the help of aid agencies. Rebuiling the lives of these people is absolutley essential for the well being of the mass number of IDPs. Initially providing them with food, shelter, and medical care should be addressed.

The long term solution of providing them with jobs, education and a sustaniable future is also absolutely necessary for these Tamil IDPs, who have been IDPs for years now in the Tamil regions.

Oxfam, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have issued statements to requesting the Sri Lankan government lift restrictions on press and aid agencies to provide cohesive support to these people, who have endured a tremendous tregdy in all angles in the horrific war; many have lost their loved ones; many have lost their livelihoods; many have lost their parents and children; many are amputated; many are without proper food, shelter, or medical care since January of 2009. The stories of these people needs to be understood with kindness and attended to as their losses and experiences are appalling. These people need immense pshychological support due to what they have gone through.

Don Mcdogull from News of the World has published a rare glimse of the living conditions of these refugee camps. The horror these people are subjected to remains silent due to the heavy media ban, and only these rare glimses provide some understanding in to the situation.

Many refugees get only one meal a day and this is quite hard on the IDPs as they have already gone through extensive starvation in the “safety zone” during war time due to the Sri Lankan government’s ban of food into the zone; elderly and children are serioulsy affected by these inadequate food supply, not to mention the rest of the IDPs who can not continue on this diet for too long.
Insufficient shelters are also a concern in the living conditions of these people.
Education of the 80,000 children are suffering and these children have a hard time getting some sense of normalcy due the stay within the refugee camps. UNICEF was denied to build temporay education centers for these children. The government has chosen to use the already running Tamil schools to be used as the refugee camps. Hence denying the access to Tamil children living in the region too.

Many of these children are just orphaned by the horrific war. Now, they are left at the mercy of the same Sri Lankan Army who have killed their parents. The psychological support these children need is absolutely necessary, but the Sri Lankan government has denied these children of the support by banning access to aid agencies. The Sri Lankan Army, who heavily guards these camps, also have allowed the paramiliary group, known as Karuna group to exploit these children for child soldier recruiting, kidnapping for ransom, torture and interrogation.

As per the report from Medico International, Humanitaian Activist Thomas Serbet, torture, rape, and killings are regular occurances at these camps.
UN Human Rights Council has turned a blind eye on the plight of the people while many humanitarian ogranizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty Internatinoal, Oxfam and ICRC have urged the council to take firm action to help these IDPs.

  17. There have been credible reports that young girls are repeatedly raped by the military and the paramilitary groups.

  18. Three hundred thousand people have been put into concentration camps and they (the authorities) have taken all the rights away from these people. They have no proper food and access to the media and aid. No freedom of speech or freedom of press.
We still don't have answers about these people that are stuck in the barbed wire fences. They're dying of diseases. Some 60% of the population in these camps are wounded and have no medical attention.

Please, Please, Please take immediate action to allow INGOs and UN agencies to help these vulnerable people.
    Sincerely,
    Ruwan K

According to Telegraph UK, Sri Lankan government has been accused of launching a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” in Tamil Areas.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/srilanka/5382676/Sri-Lanka-accused-of-ethnic-cleansing-of-Tamil-areas.html

  20. After committing atrocities worse than Nazi forces, with the heavy weaponry from all international stakeholders, especially from those with war criminal records themselves such as China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela and many others, the Sri Lankan regime has no right to say ‘it is an internal issue’.

The United Nations is formed to investigate human rights violations committed by countries that call themselves practicing democracy. Sri Lanka has been discriminating the tamil speaking minority for the past 60+ years. The co-chairs were involved in finding a just solution for the crisis. Mass killing of 20,000 innocent civilians within 24 hours is definitely a crime worse than ‘GENOCIDE’.

The UN should intervene to save the rest of those innocent civilians. They are help in barb-wired nazi-type internment camps. There’s sever lack of food, medicine and all basic needs.

Canada may take the lead to dispatch the DART team to help those in need and introduce an effective mechanism to save those young civilians being taken away in the name of ‘terrorists’ and got persecuted and/or killed.

    Justice delayed is justice denied!

  24. The War against LTTE is over as per terror state Sri Lanka. During the last phase of the war this terror state persuaded the International Community to danced to its tune and say the LTTE were holding civilians as sheilds and they want to protect these civilians. They were shedding crocodile tears which the International Community believed. The International Community pursuaded the LTTE to laydown arms and surrender. The consequence of which the IC will not forget and the IC should take Sri Lanka for War Crimes to have shot and killed all those who surrendered. Not only that, they killed on the same day over 25,000 already battered civilians! Are these not WAR CRIMES? The U.S. has evidence of this worst atrocity committed by Sri Lanka on its own citizens. For how long the Sri Lankan terror state is going to fool the International Community and for how long they are going to believe what this terror state's statements.

What happened to those civilians who came to Army controlled areas from the LTTE control before the war ended. They are being kept in concentration camps surroundered by barbed wires. Why don't the International Community now demand the Sri Lankan Government to let these people to go back to their homes. I plead to the International Community not to be fooled again by the cunning terror sri lankan state on their version that there are still LTTE militia in the camps. The young girls are taken away from the parents and kept as sex slaves by the army. Is this tolerable under UN convention? The young boys are removed from these camps and are killed and body parts are exported. Is not not a WAR CRIME? Can't the UN take action on the total number of people missing from the camps since the end of the war and stop this cruelty inflicted on Tamils, which was not even parallel in the human history? Over 10,000 people are missing from these camps. Who is going to account for these innocent Tamils? UN Secretary General has openly said that there were no signs of WAR CRIMES committed by Sri Lanka. Shame, Mr. Ban ke Monn, you are an insult to the Position of an insitution which was formed to safeguard the vulnerable humans after the 2nd world war.

If they suspect that LTTE milita is among the IDPs, then why not they let the infants, children, and their mothers and elderly to go back to their homes? This would bring down the total number of IDPS less than half. These IDPs were living without any harassment by the Sri Lankan army and were living happly under LTTE control. Even with the embargo by the Sri Lankan terror state, the people in VANNI were self-sufficent in their needs.

The U.S., E.U., and U.N. should send NATO forces to Sri Lanka and free these people from the Concentration Camps and let them resettle in their homes. I urge these organisations that the Tamils cannot live with Sinhalese side by side any longer and, hence, should recognise Tamil Eelam, carved out of Northern and Eastern Provinces and let the Tamils live with respect, dignity and safe. Thanks

BBC news service and many other news services also reporting that, a number of children in camps for people displaced by Sri Lanka ‘s Tamil conflict have been abducted, international human rights groups say.

These people are living with limited access to food, medicine, and drinking water, clothing and proper shelter.

  27. To, Roshan,

You must be sick,if Aid organisations were working for LTTEs,how many of them are alive, howmany suicide attempts they have made on GOSL since then.
Genocide of Tamils is ,your Democratically elected Govt's internal matter..!?.Then why do begged for other nations to declare LTTE as Terrorist Organisation even then they were fighting for the rights of Tamils which your demogratically elected Govt dprived them.

The whole has seen how systematically ur Govt is taking care of people in camps,…..Just nonsense.

  28. According to many Novels Terroists groups plant 'sleepers' in key locations. This is a wrong assumption. The Terror State of Srilanka has planted fully awake sleepers throughout the world through its Embassies and High commissions. Afterall they have the resources received from Tsunami, Overseas Development funds, funds from crocodile tears and begging bowls. Roshan is one of the awaken sleepers. Whenever there is one word of comment mentioned anywhere in the world not implying criticism of the Tamils or Tamil Cause there will immediatley be a response from people like Roshan. There are hundreds of International magazines and weekly and monthly publications throughuout the world in several languages that are funded and published as independent publications by the Srilanka government for the sole purpose of propanga and disinformation about LTTE. The Terrorist State of Srilanka has been building up a State based entirley on BLATANT LIES. All the suicide bombings and killings of innocent sinhalese civilians were killed by the Sinhala Secret Service in order to put the balme on LTTE and to receive International support and symapthy. Rajiv Gandhi was murdered by the Sinhalese Secret Service, not by LTTE who had nothing to gain by these murders. The benficiary was the Srilanka government. There were two earlier murders of Gandhis, Mahatma Gandhi and Indra Gandhi both were murdered by Indians not by LTTE. The Sinhalese President Premadasa was murdered by the Srilanka Secret Service becuase Premadasa was low caste and became friendly with LTTE. This Sinhala murderous Parya Race came from South Indian State of Karnataka but claims that they came from Aryans of the North. All it takes is a DNA Mitochondria analysis to identify the origin of this killers. LTTE commited no crimes. LTTE's divine and noble cause was obliterated by the massive propaganda of the Terror State and eventually finished off with the help of conniving United Nations and with the help of coutries renound for human rights violations. Only today my niece told me that she heard that all the detainees in the Vavuniya Concentration camp were behaving like Zombies. They were affected by some poison gas and deprived of all bsic needs for human existence. Mentally and physically broken and waiting for death. Yet the International Philathropists are prevented from any kind of access to these concentration camps. This hienous act is not enough to convince the International community about the human rights violations of the Terror State of Srilanka. Even now this terros State is allowed to spread their propaganda unimpeded by anything.

Lies, disinformation, distortion, murder, Rape, extortion and vandalism are the order of the day in Srilanka. If the International do gooders want to know about it then try to get access to that Terror State to witness my claims.

    Thank you,

    Siva

  31. UN, especially Ban Ki-moon and Vijay Nambiyar have abetted cold-blooded killing of Tamils in tens of thousands. If these two have any self-respect for themselves, they should immediately resign and the law enforcement should comment an investigation on the part of these leaches immediately.

That’s the only way to restore any confidence and credibility to the UN.

  32. UN and world leaders are heartless and have no empathy as they continously support and justify the Sri Lankan government's human rights abuses on Tamils.

They neither protect the Tamils nor they let the Tamils to protect themselves, I hope these leaders will rotten in hell forever for their crime against humankind.

The chief justice of Sri Lanka, who works for the Sri Lanka goverment courageously exposed (report enclosed) the plight of the Tamils in the internment camp (funded by UN) as the condition of innocent Tamils touched his heart, and he further stated "I am saying this in public, and ready to face any consequences."

There have been reports that 13,000 Tamils including children have taken away from their family by the Sri Lankan Army and gone missing since then. Some of these children as young as 10 years old have been used by the Sri Lankan army officers as sex slaves.

No laws will protect any of the victims, if you are Tamils in Sri Lanka. Sinhalese people are not bothered as long as its Tamils who is suffering.

'IDPs not protected by law' – Chief Justice (CJ) of Sri Lanka

Over two hundred thousand people in refugee camps are not treated according to the law of the land, says the Chief Justice (CJ) of Sri Lanka

CJ Sarath Nanda Silva says that the war displaced are living under appalling conditions.
The chief justice was speaking at the ceremonial opening of the new court complex in Marawila.

"While we build new courts, ten people live in one tent in these camps. They could stand straight only in the centre of these tents. Their necks will break if they move to a side of the tent".

The CJ who visited the refugee camps in Vavunia on the 14th of May spent a whole day in a camp talking to the refugees.

    Not protected by law

He said that he could not explain the pathetic situation the people undergo.

He said, "IDPs are seen waiting in queues, extending for 100 yards to take their turn to use a toilet where there is only one pot hole at the end of it" .

The Chief Justice say the refugees does not the jurisdiction of the courts. "They live outside the protection of the law of the country. I am saying this in public, and ready to face any consequences. We are doing a great wrong to these people" says CJ Sarath Nanda Silva.

The Chief Justice is to retire from his post at the end June. He was attending to one of his last official events.

  33. Roshan said in his blog that the NGO’s and other humanitarian organizations were helping LTTE and let the newly elected Sri Lankan Democratic Party to take things to their hands. What kind of an argument is this…

You are complaining that the NGO’s and other humanitarian organizations are helping LTTE. This is a joke! Also, you were saying that let the Sri Lankan Democratic Party to take things to their hands… Is Sri Lanka the only (so called) ‘Democratic’ country in the whole world?

Isn’t it a joke?

In courts, the procecutors will be asking qustions to anyone (whether or not they are guilty) that they would like to cross examine. If Sri Lankan government is not guilty, then why not face the cross examine?

If you are accusing NGO’s that they are supporting the LTTE, the Sri Lankan Government could have said that during the war.

  34. There have been credible reports that young girls are repeatedly raped by the military and the paramilitary groups.

  35. UN and world leaders are heartless and have no empathy as they continously support and justify the Sri Lankan government's human rights abuses on Tamils.

  37. Three hundred thousand people have been put into concentration camps and they (the authorities) have taken all the rights away from these people. They have no proper food and access to the media and aid. No freedom of speech or freedom of press.
We still don’t have answers about these people that are stuck in the barbed wire fences. They’re dying of diseases. Some 60% of the population in these camps are wounded and have no medical attention.

Please, Please, Please take immediate action to allow INGOs and UN agencies to help these vulnerable people.
    Sincerely,
    Ruwan K

Charge Sinhala Sri Lankan government for GENOCIDE OF INNOCENT TAMILS and WAR CRIMES

Take immediate action to release those 3 Doctors who are Jailed by Sri Lankan Sinhala military regime

Access to Press; Urge the Sinhala Sri Lankan government lift ban on media to the Tamil regions

Access to Aid Agencies; Urge the Sinhala Sri Lankan government to lift ban on access to aid agencies

Focus on the mental well being of the orphaned children and to stop child abuse in the camps by the Sinhala Sri Lankan Army and Paramilitary

Focus on stopping the torture, rape, and forced disappearances of Tamil IDPs by the Sinhala Sri Lankan Army and Paramilitary

  39. The War against LTTE is over as per terror state Sri Lanka. LTTE’s divine and noble cause was obliterated by the massive propaganda of the Terror State and eventually finished off with the help of conniving United Nations and with the help of coutries renound for human rights violations.

Currently claiming victory the State Government in Colombo is inflicting untold slaughter tragedies, killing daily bleeding lives and indescribable human suffering. International law, so far as the Tamils are concerned, is the vanishing point of humanist jurisprudence.
When Sri Lanka refused to allow NGOs, UN monitors and the medias, there must be something wrong and they want to hide the atrocities done to the innocent people. The HRC wants to investicate the govt. as well as the LTTE. If the govt.'s hands are clean, why should they disagree to face the inquiry. Regarding human rights violations, the internal affairs is a dangerous example for the future human generations. If it is so, HRC must be dissolved without further delay to save the hard earned money of the public.

  43. It is urgent to provide the humanitarian assistance to the Tamils in the concentration camps. Please send NGOs, AID workers to the concentration camp and protect the Tamils. The Tamils in the camps do not have enough food or medicine, don’t have decent space to live and more than anything else, they are very scared for all the things happening in the camps.

The international countries believed the Sri-Lankan government's properganda and went after the LTTE who were the protectors of the Tamils. All of your wish comes true. Now the Tamils in the camps are orphans. They are kept in the concentration camps. Sri Lankan government should let them leave the camps. Instead of they want to break them physically and mentally. Please all Nations, UN stop this atrocities. India, Pakistan, China, Russia please join the western countries act on humanitarian ground. Please send NGOs, AID workers and provide the innocent suffering Tamils in the camp enough help. Now it is your duty to save them.

UN has been unfair to the Tamils. Mr. Vijay Nambiar and his brother also should be investigated regarding the war crime against Tamils. If Sri Lanka doesn’t have anything to hide, why Rajapaksha is not letting any media in the effected area or in the camps. The terrorist Sri-Lankan government cannot give the excuse that the area is not safe any more. The whole world knows that the Sri Lankan government is destroying the evidence. Yet, UN is letting Sri-Lankan government getting away with everything. This is very interesting to know that UN didn’t even change their mind after witnessing that the Sri-Lankan government claimed and celebrated the victory of over 100,000 lives of its own citizen. This could be the cruelest thing in the whole world. Is the world going to ban the Rajabaksha family as a terrorist organization? Some Singhalese are claiming that Rajabaksha government has liberated the Tamils? Those Tamils were living in their dream land. In fact they are calling the international community to liberate them from the camps. Can we do it now? Can the Sri-Lankan government let them go from the camps? Sri-Lankan government and the UN were saying that LTTE was holding the civilians as Human Shields. If so, why are they punished again by the liberators? Can anyone answer? Can anyone help them with humanity? Can UN make Sri-Lankan government free the Doctors and priests? This is the task ahead for UN or any governments to do in order to earn Tamils’ heart again.

  44. Dear Roshan:

You don't have shame to tell such a wrong story about a country that has killed 100000 people in the past six months? A country that killed Tamils since its independence. It is same that the Tamils had given their moral support to get the independence than the barbaric Singalese. Last 60 years these Singalese looters live from the Tamils' economy, They rape Tamil women whenever they want but they follow Buddhism. I am sorry, the Buddhism is a relegion that has extraordinary power. But these monks (butchers and looters) follow their own Buddhism called as mahavamsa.
Do you think that Tamils can live in any part of the Islandwithout fear? Whenever the majority want a kidney or any other important body part they kidnap Tamils and remove Tamils body parts with alive. Just read todays news what the High Court Judge Mr Sarath N Silva says, for your view he may be a terrorist. There are many things to tell about your attrocities and genocide but I have to go now. Please stop these rubbish stories write something good. Please do not come in other name continue with the same name.Any way UN should take some strong action rather than playing with innocent civilians.

  45. UN and world leaders are heartless and have no empathy as they continously support and justify the Sri Lankan government’s human rights abuses on Tamils.

They neither protect the Tamils nor they let the Tamils to protect themselves, I hope these leaders will rotten in hell forever for their crime against humankind.

The chief justice of Sri Lanka, who works for the Sri Lanka goverment courageously exposed (report enclosed) the plight of the Tamils in the internment camp (funded by UN) as the condition of innocent Tamils touched his heart, and he further stated “I am saying this in public, and ready to face any consequences.”

‘IDPs not protected by law’ – Chief Justice (CJ) of Sri Lanka

Over two hundred thousand people in refugee camps are not treated according to the law of the land, says the Chief Justice (CJ) of Sri Lanka

CJ Sarath Nanda Silva says that the war displaced are living under appalling conditions.
The chief justice was speaking at the ceremonial opening of the new court complex in Marawila.

“While we build new courts, ten people live in one tent in these camps. They could stand straight only in the centre of these tents. Their necks will break if they move to a side of the tent”.

The CJ who visited the refugee camps in Vavunia on the 14th of May spent a whole day in a camp talking to the refugees.

    Not protected by law

He said that he could not explain the pathetic situation the people undergo.

He said, “IDPs are seen waiting in queues, extending for 100 yards to take their turn to use a toilet where there is only one pot hole at the end of it” .

The Chief Justice say the refugees does not the jurisdiction of the courts. “They live outside the protection of the law of the country. I am saying this in public, and ready to face any consequences. We are doing a great wrong to these people” says CJ Sarath Nanda Silva.

The Chief Justice is to retire from his post at the end June. He was attending to one of his last official events.

  49. We dom't have any time left over. Still we are getting disturbing reports from SL Army controlled area.Ban Kmoon & Nambiar is not regarded by the SL Govt. Self determinaton is the only permanent soloution for the Tamils.

  50. Dear Sinhalese friends,

You call that Sri Lankan Government a democratically elected government? IT IS A JOKE…everybody knows, it is a Sinhalese majority elected government which rules Sri Lanka with no freedom of speech for any Tamils. Only the paid Tamils by Sri Lankan Sinhalese government can speak a little bit (mostly lies). Do you know Vanni is a Thamil area and people were living peacefully and happily before. Now, Rajapakse regime went to the Tamil land (Vanni) with Sinhalese army and ruined the land and destroyed the lively-hood of the Tamils. Thousands of innocent Tamils (babies, children, women, men, elders) were killed and wounded by the continuing bombing & shelling by the SL army.

SL government did not allow any journalists, aid agencies to go into the area, mainly to hide all the atrocities done by the army & SL government. The whole drama is under the verge of fighting LTTE, but it is a master plan of Genocide on Tamils. UN is so powerless, because, SL was supported by China, Japan, India and Israel. China is not interested in Sinhalese or Tamils, they are only interested int the SL harbour. The whole world knows about that.

SL government used chemical weapons in Vanni and there are so many evidences for that, and that is another reason that the government did not allow any aid agencies to go into the war zone. Tamil people are living as refugees with no freedom, no democracy, no basic facilities, no safety in their own land. They have lost their own families and own identity by the SL government.

So, my dear Sinhalese friends: Do't ever say that the SRI Lankan government is a Democratic government and they are tryingto liberate the Tamils from LTTE. I don't know much about LTTE. But only thing we all know is LTTE has started their freedom fighting because of the SL Sinhalese government, who always suppressed the Tamils and never even listened to any Tamils' peace approach before. They wanted to only please the Sinhalese people and Buhdhist monks by making Sri Lanka- a Sinhalese Budhist only country.

This government celebrated it's victory (Victory of Mass murder of Tamils) after killing and maiming thousands of innocent Tamils in their own Tamil land. Is it called a victory? Then the victory must be celebrated by China (who gave arms), India (who provided intelligence), Japan (loaned money for arms) and Pakistan/Israel (provided support and some arms). SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN CELEBRATED BY ALL THESE COUNTRIES!!!!!!

SO….PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT INTERFERE WITH TAMILS, AND LET THEM LIVE IN THEIR OWN LAND PEACEFULLY WITH NO ARMY OR SINHALESE GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE.

TAMILS SUFFERED ENOUGH BY THE SRI LANKAN GOVERNMENT AND SINHALESE ARMY. SO PLEASE STOP RECTIFY ALL THE THE ATROCITIES DONE BY THE SL GOVERNMENT. PLEASE DO NOT KEEP LYING TO HE WORLD.

    thanks,
    Justice for Tamils

  51. Roshan malli, appe kiyanathayak poddak ahagannuwa! You Singhalese tell the world that the Tigers are done and the war has ended, and that you believe in the democratic process. If this is the case why is it that you are not allowing the international media and the aid groups monitored by the UN enter into the war zone? What are you afraid of? You cowards. Tell me in which part of the world and when in the history of the world people have been herded and barricaded behind barbed wires? It can only be done by the democratically elected government of Sri Lanka. Why is it that your democratically elected president Mahinda Rajapackaya is building Buddhist temples in the north and east, even before (at least he should be) building huts for the those displaced in the war? Is this what you mean by democracy? Lord Buddha must be ashamed of you people because of the way you practice his teachings. In my honest opinion there should be a connection from your brain to what you’re saying. You should first understand what you are saying before you start spewing out nonsense. Oh! You fellows say that the Tamils are your brothers and sisters. What about when one of your ministers gave an interview to the media about defiling our women? Is this the way you would treat your own sister? This just shows how dirty and filthy you people are. Do you know who are you partnered with? China, Russia, Iran. Look at these countries’ human rights records. It is very well said “Birds of the same feather flock together.” That is what you and your democratically elected government is. Sri Lanka holds no value for the human life. Not today but tomorrow we will have our wonderful TAMIL EELAM.

  59. Few points to those who are even not in the country and who has not voted in a government for Sri Lanka for ever…. !!

    1. It is a democratically elected government as it was elected by the people in 2005 and the government does have representations of all communities – They have ministers from all communities too

    2. People in Jaffna (or north I would say) was deprived of voting by the LTTE – the very terrorist organization you are supporting. Telling the people not to vote and then calling the government a non democratically elected government is probably the joke of this century

    3. The majority of Tamils live out side North – most in other parts of the Island and others like you who have easy access to Internet in other countries who kind of try to protect you and in the process getting screwed up.

SO – DO NOT call the government a government of the Singhala Majority !! If at all it is so, that drives the point that the Majority of the country is with the government and that I trust is called DEMOCRACY !!! A word that you guys probably need to learn… !!

    ANOTHER point !!

The killing is now over !! The killing was done only when LTTE was around and only the LTTE was killed. The government never intentionally killed or support killing a single Tamil innocent civilian – if so, there would be no Tamil brotheren left in Colombo my friend… !

YES – there were many NGO's that supported the LTTE and this was clearly mentioned before, during and after the war and such organizations were chased out of the country prior to the war. And also there is a load of evidence that are currently being investigated internationally against such organizations (as those who gave support to build subs and air crafts) – A simple question, if there were so many NGO's why on earth were the people still suffering and the LTTE had so much money.. ???

All you guys have different agenda's and talk bullshit to mislead the international community – and not being the brightest, your good friends like the person who wrote this article (JackShit is it?) have fallen in to that trap unfortunately !

  61. Obama is trying to give Palastinians a State saying they were denied of there rights. Why won't he show the same interest to the Tamils in Srilanka. why doesn't he look in to the formation of an armed Tamil group? In which way Tamils in Srilanka different to the Palastinians in middle east?
    Raja
    Australia.

  62. Raja – Palastinians do not even require to ask for a state – they were there from the time we know and it is written even in the Bible – Every Diack, Tom and Harry knows that the Jews were settled in Israel only after the 2nd world war.

If you want to know more about Palastine follow this link – it clearly identifies the history that we know http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine

It is the American lead allies that created the mess and they anyway need to solve it now anyway – if Eelam is given, may be several years down the line, they will have to still clear the mess.

if you wan to know about the Jaffna Kingdom U R talking of…

The Jaffna kingdom (Tamil: யாழ்ப்பாண அரசு) (1215-1619 CE), also known as Kingdom of Aryacakravarti, of modern northern Sri Lanka came into existence after the invasion of Magha, who is said to have been from Kalinga, in India.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffna_Kingdom

It clearly says that it was due to an attack by the south Indian Magha who was chased off latterly. This has been the story throughout – some fellow from south India comes and attacks the innocent Singhalees (Obviously because they have more man power being a large country)

    As per Eelam;
Eelam (Tamil: ஈழம், īḻam) also spelled Eezham, Ilam or Izham in English is the native Tamil name for the South Asian island state of Sri Lanka. Eelam is also a name for the spurge (a plant), toddy (an intoxicant) and gold. The exact etymology and the original meaning of the word are not clearly known, although there are number of conflicting theories. The Retroflex approximant l in Eelam is a unique phoneme for Dravidian languages, retained in closely related Tamil and Malayalam.

See – the name is Malayalam – it was used to call the Island of Sri Lanka and there are no evidence what so ever to say that it was a tamil kingdom.

That is how the Palastinians in Middle East are Different from Tamils in Sri Lanka – Tamils always came to Sri lanka from India where as Palstinians were there and had been fighting with Jews for eternity…. and Tamils have been migrating from South india and attacking Sri lanka for iternity – there is a massive difference between two people living in same land fighting each other and people from another land attacking another !!

Do not tell that the Tamils were there there before Sinhalees etc – that is bullshit and made up stories that came in to existence only after the LTTE troubles began… !!

  69. The Sri Lankan Goverment is the terorist goverment in Sri Lanka and killed innocent tamils not only recently but from the independence. If they are honest why do they have to control the media in Sri Lanka? Even in Jaffna now it is very difficult to get out from there for some urgent matters in Colombo or other areas even the person is more than 60 Years old. They have to bripe the Sri Lankan Army to get a pass from them to even visit Colombo. Is it acceptable? In jaffna lots of houses under the Sri Lankan Racial goverment Army ctook control and not paid any compensation or not provided any alternative accommodation. Is the Snhialse allow this one in the Sinhales area? If there is a bombalst in Sri Lanka goverment pay for the Shinhalese and their failes the compensation. But not a single time provided for tamils. Even after 1983 not provided any compensation after the racial triaot created and implemented by the Sri Lankan racial government.

  70. LOL @ all of you !!

Either you are really stupid or you guys really do not want to know things !!

I saw one comment stating that Rajiv Ghandi was killed by Sri Lankan Secret Services – LOL @ the IDIOT !! You are not only being stupid, but calling the Indian Secret Service Stupid !! – Do you think that the Indian Secret Service would not know to-date if it was the Sri lankan Secret Service who killed Rajiv G ?? – LOL.. Mann.. U really need to get a life !!! OK – I have woken up and now I am fighting for the right of all Sri Lankan's (i.e. all those who are citizens of this beautiful Island) and I trust that it is high time that you Kumbha Karna's wake up too !!

It's so unfortunate that only a few Sri Lankan's living in SL could get in to these types of sites and actually express themselves as the penetration of Internet is low. But for all the members of the Diaspora, Hmmm… it is all free, may be part of the dole you get… !! Well, I am still willing to fight single handed to elucidate even one person who would actually waste his/her time to go through your stupid comments !!

I STILL cannot believe that you people are crying over the spillt milk of Terrorism… guys – now you have a free land to live in – take the damn opportunity !!! There will be no more people coming in to your houses and taking your young kids away to give them a gun and a Cyanide capsule instead of a Book… Your vehicles will be with you and will not be taken away by some terror group, you will have your houses in tact and not made bunkers out of them, you will have your farm land and not land full of landmines blowing your limbs off !! – Damn it man !! Take the opportunity !!

  71. A Rajah – Umbai Gona !! (A singhala song)

Isn't the liberation from the Tamils it self a compensation plan for the Tamils ??

Now they can live in peace and have their hard earned monies to themselves than donating to a Terrorist organization ha ??

In addition, how about renovating and building of new road ways, Hospitals, railway, houses to people who's houses were torn apart by the LTTE to make bunkers etc.. enough compensation ?

Get a life you fellow – don't try to mislead any, cause many are not and will be not !!

  75. As a Sri Lankan of Sinhalese origin, I have been horrified as I have watched events unfold during these last few months. It has been well established by numerous credible sources that the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE both engaged in massive human rights atrocities. I do not trust the Sri Lankan government to conduct an impartial and unbiased investigation. In a country in which journalists (both Sinhalese and Tamil) routinely get "bumped" off, nothing less than a formal international investigation is acceptable. Proud to be Sri Lankan, but truly ashamed of my government.
