Truce Over – Bloodbath Next?

The two-day truce called by the Sri Lankan government ended on Wednesday, with a Sri Lankan military spokesman saying military operations against the opposition Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (known as the LTTE or Tamil Tigers) had resumed.  But how do you carry out an offensive against an area of about 5 square miles (about twice the size of Central Park in New York) and containing at least 100,000 civilians, without causing massive civilian casualties?  John Holmes, the U.N. Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said in a press conference on Wednesday that the danger of a bloodbath was of great concern.  The French and British governments issued a joint statement urging President Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka to announce a new pause in hostilities.

The civilians are being held in the war zone by the Tigers who won’t let them leave.  Holmes reported during his press conference that during the two-day pause in the fighting, actually fewer civilians had managed to flee the zone than previously and the LTTE was actively preventing them from doing so.  The Tigers must stop using the civilians as human shields and let them leave.  The Sri Lankan government must announce another pause in hostilities so the civilians can get out safely.

  1. Srilanka is carrying out a historical war.
Per Srilankan government publication The great chronicles of Srilanka chapter 22 para 14, http://lakdiva.org/mahavamsa/,

Sinhala queen Viharamahadevi had … urge to drink the water used to wash a sword that had cleaved the head of a warrior of (TAMIL king) Elara , whilst standing on that same head.

Sword on the Srilankan Flag originates from this horrible history.

  9. I have to disagree with Santhiramoulesan. For one thing, the account of Sri Lankan history is inaccurate – the 1972 Constitution didn't make Buddhism the only religion (it's more complicated than that), and the 1915 riots were between the Sinhalese and the Muslims, not the Sinhalese and the Tamils. More importantly, the account leaves out the scores of human rights abuses committed by the LTTE against civilians of all communities, whether Sinhalese, Tamil or Muslim, and doesn't mention how the Tigers repeatedly broke off peace talks and returned to war. Both sides in Sri Lanka have a lot of blood on their hands and a lot to answer for.

  11. I would like to mention one thing about Jim's comment.
1915 riots were between Sinhalees and Tamils. cauze Moslim is a religion and not a Nation. SL Moslims are (99%) are Tamil origin. Arabs who came to SL maried to Tamils and their generations too. after 3 or 4th generation they become automaticaly Tamils and they do speak Tamil and not Arab.

SL try to divide Tamils in to small groups.
    1. Upcountry Tamils
    2.Ceylon Tamils
    3.Muslims
    4. Low country Sinhalees ( Karawa and Parava christian Tamils from south)
    5. Rodya's (already bacame Sinhalees) check photo's of Rodaya women on Google. fromer Brittish Pirates who robed SL took Naked photo's of these ladies and still making money out of it.

Where ever Briitain went colonaise a country is a problem created by Brittish. so do the Tamil and Sinhala problem created by former Colonial Pirates Brittish.

    Who destroyed SL?
Portugal, Netherland and England. for more than 500 years they destroyed SL. now they are playing a GENTLEMAN game.

  13. As Obama said in Ghana Re: European Colonialism effects: "the tragic past that has sometimes haunted this part of the world… It is easy to point fingers and to pin the blame"

… but tribalism existed prior to European arrival, was played on to the European advantage and persists due to greedy self-serving politicians.

You would be a fool to trust "King" Mahinda Rajapaksa http://tiny.cc/nKxFe to save Sri Lanka, he has demonstrated to the world that he's cut from the same cloth as all his predecessors to the post in regards to nepotism and "Helping Hambantota" scandal. He will promote the interests of Sinhalese south and promote schemes to have poor or criminal convict Sinhalese colonize northern Tamil areas. It won't be the first time that colonization scheme for the Tamil north has been tried. http://tiny.cc/zLFxx
