Sri Lanka: what price "stability"?

In an interview published today in The Nation, a Sri Lankan newspaper, Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, claimed that an international investigation into abuses committed by both sides during the recent fighting could destabilize Sri Lankan society.  In mid-May, the Sri Lankan government had announced that it had defeated the opposition Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), reconquering all the territory held by them and killing their leaders.  The LTTE had been fighting for an independent state for the Tamil minority in the north and east of the island for over 26 years.  Both sides committed gross human rights abuses during the course of the conflict.  Amnesty International has called for an international investigation into the abuses committed by both sides in recent months.

The Minister said in the interview:

The armed forces had to do what they had to do to eradicate the ruthless terrorist outfit and give a new lease of life within a democratic framework to the citizens.  In the process of doing that many thousands of lives had to be sacrificed.

In response to another question about the number of civilian casualties killed during the last stages of the war, the Minister said:

No one knows really how many civilians were killed because of the complex nature of the conflict.  How do you distinguish between the appearance of a LTTE cadre and a civilian?  We know that LTTE cadres were not always wearing uniforms. . .  So to talk about numbers in respect of civilian casualty [sic], it is like walking on thin ice, no one can authoritatively support numbers and therefore it is best not to speculate.

It seems to me that the Minister is saying, in effect, that thousands of civilians may have been killed but it was necessary in order to defeat the LTTE, so let’s just forget the past and move on.  And without an investigation, we’ll never know how many of the dead were civilians or LTTE cadre but let’s not try to find out for fear of “destabilizing” the country.  How would the truth be “destabilizing”?  It could be if an investigation determined that the military committed war crimes but the government held no one to account for them.  Is this what the Minister has in mind – there will never be any accountability, so best not to expose what the military did toward the end of the war?  If this is indeed what the Sri Lankan government has in mind, the international community shouldn’t stand for it.  We need an international investigation now.

  1. Wooooo.. what an Insight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about the genocide in Rwanda no one bother to talk about ?? Why did the USA and the so called International community look the other side when it happened ?? Why no investigation ?

Oh – wait up ! What about the innocent civilians killed in Iraq, Afghanistan and now in Pakistan ? Why no investigations ?

I trust if any investigations on those are carried out, the SL government will have no issue in having an investigation over in SL as to what happened ??

A 30 year old menace to the world has been defeated… What else to do than move on – at least the Tamil people in the east and now the north are moving on happy with their new lives,… Why can you P brains do the same ??

  3. Sri Lanka is quite stable now after wasting several billions of dollars to eradicate terrorism !! We have to spend a few more billions for development work after the mess that was created by the LTTE. However, we feel that some idiots from the west wants to make it unstable – such donkey's should not talk about the stability of Sri Lanka – cause Stable's are for Horses and not for Donkeys !!

  5. Thank you, Jim.

Please continue to shed light on the plight of Tamils.

Please urge action to stop children being separated from parents and being put into "rehabilitation centres" forcibly. Urgent independent monitoring is needed. Also, what is happening in the areas occupied by GoSL Army. Are there "slave camps" in Kilinochchi. Please urge UN to demand access to see all areas of Vanni to check for SL armed forces secretly having camps there.

  7. Very illuminating, these satisfied Sinhalese comments. Illuminating that they believe letting in the media or aid groups will make the situation in the "happy" wartorn zones "unstable" !! Nrver imagined, after a war is over & the "enemy" destroyed, media coverage & aid to the war victims can create instability !! Such stablility ( or "stables" ? which , exactly ? ) is surely for 2legged donkeys too, & not for the wiser 4foots.

If the Tamils are all so happy already with their "new lives", there's not a government on earth couldn't do with such great footage to silence its ( "Western" only? ) critics. Rajapakse et al are sporting such huge big Yorick grins Hamlet once rhapsodized about & missing not a single photo op , why not let us see the merry Tamils joining in the carnival ?

Or is all not so well in the state of …. ummm… Sri Denmark ?

  8. The ( Freudian or Orwellian ? ) image of stables as the cradle of stability & democracy in Sri Denmark is quite telling, don't y'all think ??? Animal Farm for this 21st century, with partitioned stalls for the straw embedded media's long night , bridles, bits & saddles arranged a – shining !! The Tamils in their 40 giant liberated & barbed wired stables too, happily munching, bovine & blissed out ………. Ohh please pleease give us a peak into this Arcadia unbound !! Jim, are you devastated now to be exiled with them darn donkeys of the West from this pastoral paradise, or what ? The stable of democracy, in the land of the freshly free — but not for you or for me !!
PS.Expect a coming flood of Tamil expats stampeding to be let back in !!!!

  9. Wow! i thought human rights were a humane thing. but u people are screaming here like animals! Anyway before human rights, human responsibilities come. never forget that. Only by abiding by those, can humans or animals live happily; definitely not by protesting and arousing anger.

Sadly it is apparent that mister McDonald has in his analysis of the mentioned article, failed to see the rest of the lines. Have you ever heard the quote "the whole is more than the sum of it's parts"?

If you analyse the above extract from the article, you can see that the minister says "armed forces… give a new lease of life… to the citizens". Then:"In the process of doing that many thousands of lives had to be sacrificed." The minister was talking about the "22,000" or more personnel of the ARMED FORCES WHO LOST THEIR LIVES during the war. the rest of the paragraph goes like this:
"That is the constitutional duties of the armed forces of this country. The President has gone on record many times that this was not a war between one ethnic group against the other or the South against the North. It was a fight to restore democracy and the rule of law in the entirety of the country and to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the county."

The second paragraph is also missing some important sentences from the middle. "…wearing uniforms. Is anyone talking about how many LTTE cadres have been killed? Of course, we know that on several publicised incidents the LTTE killed quite a number of civilians to achieve their own parochial objectives. We also know that there was no interest as far as the security forces were concerned in killing civilians to achieve the end objective of defeating terrorism because ours was a humanitarian operation to liberate our citizens by defeating terrorism. So to talk about numbers…"
So, what the minister is trying to saying is that, the tiger supporters are making claims adding the numbers of their own losses to the civilian account. And we all know they had a very efficient misinformation unit for spreading their agenda. Although LTTE is defeated, their supporters abroad are striving to get it back on track somehow. They even have a cadre inside BBC.

So, in this globalization and efficient dissemination of information it's always more prudent to use our heads and think beyond what you see and hear. And just think: is this even protecting any ones rights in the first place?? Here is the full article: http://www.defence.lk/new.asp?fname=20090608_08

  12. Ciero !!
I am quite astonished about the following statement of yours !!

"""Please urge action to stop children being separated from parents and being put into “rehabilitation centers” forcibly. Urgent independent monitoring is needed. Also, what is happening in the areas occupied by GoSL Army. Are there “slave camps” in Kilinochchi."""

Children being separated and sent to rehabilitation centers ?????????
If I may enlighten you as to who separated the Children from their parents and hung a Cyanide capsule around their necks – I trust that it was the LTTE – and Piribaharan who treat as god ! If you really care for these children, be happy that the government is rehabilitating them and teaching them their A B C's and also how to use their hands to earn decent money than hold a gun to kill people or swallow the Cyanide capsule. They are being provided with vocational training and be given jobs in the near future… ALSO mind you that they were cadres who surrendered or who were captured and not pulled out of camps.

If you say that providing shelter, food, banking facilities, Education and play ground facilities (for children) etc, FREE OF CHARGE for no work done as being contained in a SLAVE CAMP, I will have to assume that you are either ignorant or have very weak knowledge of English language… If it is neither of these, you fall in to the category of the Donkey mentioned above by "Stables are for Horses".

  13. Illuminating Djhonkey !!!

Indeed there are enough and more aid workers and media groups who are currently working in these areas…. BUT, as I said, only the Horses… No use of Donkeys 🙂 – Less work, no productivity, only trouble… !!

Of course we have seen on media many such people being happy and praising the liberation from the Terrors. You unfortunately won't be able to see the relevant footage we are talking of as most of the media that you tune in to won't show them because their tiger tails would not let them do so.

Hence, I trust that your writeup is not far fetched and biased. Unfortunately I can only see what you have written, but, if some day, I hear a Donkey cry, I would be able put a face in front of the handwriting 🙂 !!

  25. The Sinhalese "commentators" are like Macbeth seeing Banquo's ghost everywhere .

They're seeing the media & foreign rights & aid groups all as hidden Tigers . Any critic is a tiger in disguise. All distinctions are erased . All foreigners who're not authority figures from supportive governments are threats. The paranoia characteristic of fascism has set in. This is bunker mindset in "peacetime", under perrenial siege . Obsession circles its wagons.

This xenophobia is the ready resort of reactionary sections in south Asian societies in particular.

At the same time they're making changes to try correct this exposed self isolation.

They claim now they do have media & aid groups in the concentration camps.
Then, unable to say more, they say it's the government helping the camp's prisoners.

Instructive as well is their idea of foreign support. It's always other regimes like their own whom they cite, regimes that are near mirror images of their own, tho' i must say even these autocracies pale somewhat in comparison to the Sinhalese govenrment's last record.

But the point is, they continue to confuse governments with public opinion !!! This is a symptom of such abysmal ignorance that, seeing the trapper in his own trap, one must do the only decent thing — pretend one hasn't noticed, & haste away.

  26. DJohnkey !The Little bit of Shakespeare I know, Mc Beth Actually saw the Ghost of Banquo ! In that sense you are right when we say that we see SOME of the media with a tigers Tail. Even the European Parliament has admitted the fact that there were many groups in the west who did aid the LTTE for THE MONEY in it..

If you really want to know the details with regard to the post war progress – read the comments made by Yasusi Akashi – the Japanees Peace secretary.

Now Mr. Akashi has been a critic of the war and the government of SL for many years. But, why has he not being stopped from coming to Sri Lanka ? Because we knew he was genuine and his efforts were genuine. It was not to help the Terror groups or work to another persons agenda and most important, not for the MONEY in it.

This is the very reason we reiterate that all your false propaganda is going a waste in today's context. In the past, when the GOSL propaganda was not strong, you managed to go around the world and lie about the situation here… NOT anymore – sorry – we will ensure that the world knows the truth hereon…. Hope you guys would understand at least now !! Well, again… Horses do understand better than the ………………. !
