Colbert: Death Penalty Deters Hunting Interns for Sport

If the death penalty is unconstitutionally wanton and freakish, then what about Lady Gaga?  A profound, if unanswered question that Stephen Colbert raised last night as he lamented the decline of capital punishment in the US, blaming “juries and prosecutors” and CSI-Miami.  He declared his belief that the death penalty is a deterrent, in that it deters him from hunting his interns for sport “in America.”

Colbert also took on Justice Scalia’s recent infamous dissent in the Troy Davis case, where Scalia stated flatly that there is no problem with execution someone who is “actually” innocent.  “Executing the innocent may be cruel, but as long as Scalia is on the bench, it will not be unusual.”  A (typically) weird interview with Barry Scheck of The Innocence Project followed.

As for Troy Davis, he is still waiting for the scheduling of the evidentiary hearing the Supreme Court granted him, over the objections of Scalia and his cohort Clarence Thomas.

  1. There's a reason why Colbert's on Comedy Central: It's not his actual view. He's portraying ridiculous viewpoints on the world and its current events. This isn't supposed to be ill with Colbert, is it?

  3. Thank goodness the death penalty is on Stephen Colbert's radar screen.

I produce the news program Execution Watch on KPFT-FM whenever Texas puts someone to death. In two years of doing so, I've reached maybe a few hundred people. Colbert does one satirical bit, highlighting the absurdity of capital punishment and the inanity of a Supreme Court justice who all but endorses executing innocent people, and he reaches millions.

I'll continue my show, but I gladly join the Colbert Nation.

  5. Troy Davis and the other men currently on Georgia's Death Row are now being deprived of contact visits. Starting with the new year (and according to the GA Department of Corrections' spokesperson, unrelated to the suicide of an inmate on New Year's Eve and the recent death they called a suicide which was actually a murder) those on Death Row are being denied contact visits which provided them an opportunity to hug/ shake hands/ kiss/ touch a loved one. They are currently being locked down 23 hours a day which limits their access to phones and showers. They have had to limit their approved list of visitors to 13 with only 2 non family members. Georgia Death Row inmates are, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, having a hunger strike in response to this!

  7. What is going on in Georgia's death row? Who is investigating the deaths? How long will visitation be restricted? What is the status of the hunger strike? Thanks for any information.

  8. No-Contact Visitation for Death Row Inmates Housed at the Georgia Diagnostics and Classification Prison is intended to be permanent although family and friends are are fighting this excessive and unnecessary mass punishment.

  11. Thanks Jennifer. Is there any online, letter writing, or call-in support that people can join? Have any of Troy Davis' supporters been notified that this is happening? (On FB, there are many such groups. There isn't any notice yet on the troyanthonydavis website.)

  13. Very good article. I've found your site via Bing and I'm really happy about the information you provide in your posts. Btw your sites layout is really messed up on the Kmelon browser. Would be great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the good work!

  15. Do state sites that give inmate location let you know when the inmate may be released or if they have been transferred? Are transfers part of criminal records?
