The state of Georgia wants to execute Brandon Rhode tonight at 7pm. Please take action – ask the Parole Board to stay the execution. Amnesty International just released a new document about the cruelty of the death penalty, highlighting this case and underlining the irony of President Obama’s speech to the United Nations promoting the need for the world to focus on the respect of human rights.
Rhode’s lawyers are scrambling to halt the execution stating that a meaningful competency review of Rhode has not been made. Almost 90 pages of documents about his hospital visit early in the week following his attempted suicide were only just today sent to his lawyers. Other documents have also been slow coming to them that are critical in mounting an intervention around his competency to face execution. It seems that Rhode’s attempt to take his only life, using a razor blade to his arms and neck, have been inconvenient to authorities who have been tasked with taking his life. Rhode is not an innocent man, but he is a human being and what we as a society do to him speaks volumes about who we are and what our values are. The state is making us all complicit in an unnecessary and outrageous act of cruelty.

As a daughter of someone who was murdered, I say kill the piece of crap. The victims wife walked into her home after work and found her husband and two children brutally murdered. He made the father watch as he killed the children one by one as they came home from school. Why should he or his cohort live? He didn't allow his victims to live. Instead he left a trail of grief and suffering behind him. I am from the area where he murdered his victims. He went to school with the girl he killed. She dissed him, so he robbed their home and waited for everyone to come home to kill them. Why should I keep paying to feed this dirtbag? Where were the human rights for the victims? Have you ever been to a crime scene and have witnessed a child being killed? I really doubt that you have. I've been to a few and I have even had to take someone's life to save another persons life. Taking a person's life in the right circumstances is okay and my pastor agreed with it as well as everyone else including a Superior Cout Judge, who is very religious. Brandon Rhodes is a fowl human being for killing those kids and I hope if he gets a stay, he can get out of prison to be your neighbor. Maye he will treat your daughter like Eric Nenno did in Texas. Once again Amnesty international is making a mockery of its claim to represent "human rights" by standing up to defend the worst of human rights abusers. Human rights abusers are not all third world dictators or rebel leaders who employ 12-year olds with Ak-47s.
Human rights abusers are also common criminals who's callous disregard for human life enables them to slaughter a father and his two children just to avoid going to prison for their other crimes. They deserve a swift and just execution after being tried, convicted, and sentenced by a jury of their peers. The family members of the victims of their crimes have been through enough pain and suffering already. They do not need further anguish from special interest groups seeking to get their family members' killers off the hook under their misguided and perverted notion of "human rights".

The cold blooded killing of a father and two children for the sake of covering up a crime, or the execution of the killer after he was given the benifit of a police investigation, a trial, a sentencing phase, and over a decade of appeals. None of those luxeries were granted to Bryan, Kristin, and Steven Moss, whose names AI did not even find worthy of mention in this blog.
Brandon Rhode deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars. The U.S.must abolish capital punishment, as it abolished slavery and prohibited torture and cruel and unusual punishment. In this day and age, the death penalty in the US is an anachronism that places this nation alongside countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, Pakistan and Yemen, to mention just a few.

There were three men involved, and before the trials began, when asked by the media if we wanted the prosecution to seek the death penalty, the spokesperson for our family replied, without hesitation, "No." We all realized that taking another life would not bring her back and that being filled with hate and a need for revenge would only serve to disgrace the memory of our loved one and eat away at our own souls. Those individuals will have to live with what they have done for the rest of their lives. My family has chosen the path of forgiveness, and not one of us could tell you today the names of those involved in her murder. We choose, instead, to remember the kind, loving person that Donna was.
Murder is murder, whether committed by an individual or carried out by the state.

I noticed you conveniently left Japan (where capital punishment is legal) off your list of "a few". Why? Is it because it hurts your cause to acknowledge the death penalty isn't only practiced in nations with autocratic dictatorships?

No it is about what they did. That's why Rhodes is on death row. It's not for unpaid parking tickets or jaywalking. It's for the cold blooded killing of a father and two children just to cover up a crime.
Rhodes got the benifit of a police investigation, a trial, a sentencing phase, and over a decade of appeals. Thier victims did not. There simply is no equation between his crime and his punishment for it. His sentence is justified punishment under the law, not revenge.

CNS, I do not belong to Amnesty or any other organization, because I do not want my decisions clouded by loyalties to any group. I also am not a Christian, though I believe in the one teaching of Jesus, and that is unconditional love. The need for revenge does, in fact , lead us to exact "an eye for en eye." I believe those who commit crimes should be punished; in fact, I turned in a nephew who had committed a crime (no, not jaywalking or a parking ticket). I am very saddened by the fact that we live in a society today that teaches our children that violence is okay in certain instances and that some people should not be considered as human. CNS, and others, as a postscript, please Google Celia McWee. She happens to be a fantastic woman I had the privilege of meeting in her home almost three years ago. Celia has been on both sides of this issue. Her ex son-in-law murdered her daughter, and her son was executed by the state of South Carolina. Celia has found it in her heart to forgive both her daughter's husband and those people in South Carolina who murdered her son. She has continued to fight against the death penalty and to support other men on South Carolina's death row. If, after reading her story, you cannot realize why a life for a life is not the way, I just pity you.

Carolyn Bond, thank you for your response. I simply do not believe the death penalty is "revenge" or "an eye for an eye". If it was about revenge, we would never have given Rhode a trial or over ten years of appeals. We would simply have locked him in a house and shot him in the face, just like what he did to his victims. That would have been "an eye for an eye". Instead, Rhodes got the advantage of having a fair trial where he was able to present his case in court, along with many, many years of appeals afterwords. That makes his sentence justified punishment, not revenge.
To equate a death sentence through the legal system, with all the safeguards and opportunities given to the defendent in the process, with the murder that put the killer on death row in the first place is totally illogical. Thus it is absurd to claim the people who carried out the execution in South Carolina are no different then the killer who had only himself to blame for being on the receiving end fo it.

No one is claiming that Rhode is not human, certainly not me. He is a human being who committed a terrible crime and is being held accountable for it, nothing more.

CNS, We are talking about a system that metes out revenge in a "civilized" manner. The "eye for an eye" concept in our legal system does not mean that we do the exact same thing to the person who committed the crime that he did to someone else. We strap someone to a gurney and do it the "humane" way, by injecting him first with a drug which paralyzes and masks the agonizing pain from those watching (unless it is botched). We are also talking about a system that does not actually provide those "safeguards" which you claim exist, hence the number of innocent people exonerated and the number of innocent people executed because the system which you seem to believe in so strongly failed them, and they were either killed by the state or spent most of their lives behind bars for crimes they did not commit.
I am sorry you cannot see that when we decide a person is not fit to live, we
negate his or her humanity.
By the way, my faith and my family have taught me that taking a life is never the answer. Although, as I said earlier, I am not a Christian, I think Jesus was pretty clear on that.

The people who are taken off death row get off because we give them appeal after appeal after appeal to ensure we get it right. Rhode has had 13 years now to convince the courts, the parole board, and the governor of his state that he did not deserve the sentence given to him by a jury of his peers. In doing so, he spent more time alive on death row then two of his victims spent in the world. That he has failed to get his sentence reduced is not evidence of a broken system, it's evidence he has no case.

When somone commits a terrible crime, it is up to us to decide their punishment. Deciding whether or not to give a hardened killer life in prison or the death penalty has no bearing on their humanity. They are just as human on death row as they are spending a life sentnece in prison.

No it is about what they did. That’s why Rhodes is on death row. It’s not for unpaid parking tickets or jaywalking. It’s for the cold blooded killing of a father and two children just to cover up a crime.
Rhodes got the benifit of a police investigation, a trial, a sentencing phase, and over a decade of appeals. Thier victims did not. There simply is no equation between his crime and his punishment for it. His sentence is justified punishment under the law, not revenge.

CNS, I do not belong to Amnesty or any other organization, because I do not want my decisions clouded by loyalties to any group. I also am not a Christian, though I believe in the one teaching of Jesus, and that is unconditional love. The need for revenge does, in fact , lead us to exact “an eye for en eye.” I believe those who commit crimes should be punished; in fact, I turned in a nephew who had committed a crime (no, not jaywalking or a parking ticket). I am very saddened by the fact that we live in a society today that teaches our children that violence is okay in certain instances and that some people should not be considered as human. Celia has been on both sides of this issue. Her ex son-in-law murdered her daughter, and her son was executed by the state of South Carolina. Celia has found it in her heart to forgive both her daughter’s husband and those people in South Carolina who murdered her son. She has continued to fight against the death penalty and to support other men on South Carolina’s death row. If, after reading her story, you cannot realize why a life for a life is not the way, I just pity you.

Carolyn Bond, thank you for your response. I simply do not believe the death penalty is “revenge” or “an eye for an eye”. If it was about revenge, we would never have given Rhode a trial or over ten years of appeals. We would simply have locked him in a house and shot him in the face, just like what he did to his victims. That would have been “an eye for an eye”. Instead, Rhodes got the advantage of having a fair trial where he was able to present his case in court, along with many, many years of appeals afterwords. That makes his sentence justified punishment, not revenge.
To equate a death sentence through the legal system, with all the safeguards and opportunities given to the defendent in the process, with the murder that put the killer on death row in the first place is totally illogical. Thus it is absurd to claim the people who carried out the execution in South Carolina are no different then the killer who had only himself to blame for being on the receiving end fo it.
Finally your statement that “I am very saddened by the fact that we live in a society today that teaches our children that violence is okay in certain instances and that some people should not be considered as human” is a total non-issue. No one is claiming that Rhode is not human, certainly not me. He is a human being who committed a terrible crime and is being held accountable for it, nothing more.

From all that I have read Brandon Rhode and his accomplice Daniel Lucas were high on methamphetamines when they committed this horrible act of taking human life. They were stealing in order to keep supporting their habit. They made a choice to begin doing meth in the first place so this does not in anyway excuse this grisly murdering of children. Since human beings have been on this earth there has been stealing and killing but in recent times such drugs as meth, heroin, crack cocaine and the legal drug alcohol have been all been there when murder and other crimes were committed. The state of Georgia is not seeking revenge on Brandon Rhode; it is just meting out punishment and taking his life just happens to be his punishment. The problem with the death penalty is that it takes to long to be executed. Murderers, rapists and child molesters should have no rights to the appeal system. Once convicted beyond a shadow of a doubt, using the latest forensic technology if neccessary then they should be executed immediately. Contrary to what some think, this would be a huge deterrent.
Well what I do know he was 18 year’s old at the time this took place and he has spent much of his adult in prison with very little freedom and I do know that we all make mistake’s in life but he for some reason got on the wrong track and what i do know he dosen’t need his life took for 1 bad choice he made in his life takeing another life will not do anyone any justice and will be more sadness in this case for his family and I dont want never think takeing another life by votes in court are jury’s in court is right it’s not up to any human to vote to take a life He is Human and God created him as much as anyone ele’s in the world and i wouldnt think god would want anyone to stand up and vote for another human to be put to dead if God had his choice in the way life was suppose to be like the world would have never had any sin but we are born into sin and will die with sin and ask god to forgive us for our sins and mean it from the heart and we shall be saved from all sin we comment.

You have suffered more than we in this post can even imagine, and yet, you have come out of this horror that your family has endured, with a strength and love of humanity that i don't know that i could match, had it been me and my family going through this. The fact is that this should not be about vengeance or hatred towards the guilty person although I am sure it is next to impossible for the victims family members not to feel that way. Even outsiders feel that way. If we as a civilized society with values don't have punishments that fit the crime, then what does that say about us? I have heard from someone that has been in prison and they said it wasn't all that bad except for the fact that you are closed off from your family and society. I mean they have a free roof over their head, they watch tv, read books, exercise, take classes, eat three meals a day all on the tax payer money. If they behave it really isn't as terrible a place as you might think. I believe that the punishment should fit the crime and in this case I believe that the death penalty is justified. Executing the two men that committed the horrific murder of a father and his two children is not murder, it is JUSTICE!!! I am a Christian and yes I believe that anyone can be forgiven for any sin, including murder but that doesn't mean that they don't have to face the death penalty for their terrible crimes in this life. I want to address everyone who thinks I'm filled with anger and hatered towards Mr. Rhodes. I'm not angry with him because I don't even know him and he has never done anything to me, my family or my friends. And I hope he has made peace with God and himself. But that doesn't mean that I think he should avoid the death penalty, his crimes were very VIOLENT and EVIL and he deserves to take a dirt nap. What I dislike is when his attorney appeals and uses terms such as "cruel and unusual punishment", "He was subject to harsh and inhumane treatment after his suicide attempt" or like some one said on here, "He was 18 years old and he made 1 mistake." Where do you people come up with this crap? "Cruel and unusual punishment" is being shot in the face five times or arriving home to find your children dead only to be executed like them. "Harsh and inhumane '? Wow! He was strapped to a chair so that he could not harm himself. People are strapped into chairs each and everyday at jails when they become a threat to themselves or another person. And he did not make one mistake, he made several mistakes. The first one was doing Meth, the second one was breaking into the home and stealing things, the third one was going back to the home to steal more items, the fourth, fifth and sixth mistakes were KILLING two kids and a father in an inhumane way. I don't believe they were ment to be taken literally with no exceptions. After all, "thou shall not judge" doesn't stop us from putting killers like Rhode in prison for life, does it? Why can't we take it one step further when we think it is warrented?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Ted Strickland on Monday postponed the execution of a convicted killer who managed to take an overdose of pills in his death row cell and was found unconscious just hours before he was to be driven to his execution.
A week later: Ohio killer Lawrence Reynolds was pronounced dead at 10:27 AM 03-16-2010 in the execution chamber of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.
Reynolds was convicted of murdering (by strangling and beating with a tent pole), robbing and attempting to rape 67 year old Loretta Foster in 1994 for drinking money.
It's the same scenario and it will be the same ending.And D.P.N, it would make my day when I know his sentence has been carried out.
There are alot of should be's,could be's and would be's on here. I am a Christian and was brought up knowing right from wrong. My family taught me that. I also was brought up to know that you have to answer to the decisions that you make. I am not filled with hatred toward this man or what he has done although these murders hit really close to home. I believe that God takes care of what needs to be done. Do I agree that Mr. Rhodes needs to have the ultimate punishment? YES! I also agree that this would be an easy way out for him. I hate the fact that he will not have to live 20 more years with the guilt (if he really has any) of what he has done. I wish that he could be sat in a jail cell with no windows and vivid grotesque pictures of what he has done to these people. And have to look at these and hear sounds of people pleading and begging for their lives and to smell a smell of pugent rotting flesh 24 hours a day! All of this with no other human communications until it makes him so crazy that he wish he were dead! That is what I wish for this man. Maybe that wouldn't be as CRUEL AND UNUSUAL as just plain out killing him! Or maybe it would!

If you remember, they Federal Courts denied it last week so why would they change their minds this week. Like I said long ago, it's a dead issue and he's a dead man walking. Who's playing Monday night football?

Brandon Rhode, who is about to be put death like a dog by the state of Georgia, was an alcoholic at age… 11.
Who cared then?
His execution tonight has cost Georgia's taxpayers over a million of dollars (see Death Penalty Information Center website for accurate figures and breakdown of costs).
A hundredth of that sum would have saved four lives, not to mention the pain and sorrow of several devastated families.

If a mosquito is buzzing around, I kill it! Rhodes is a mosquito! He gave up his right to live in our society when he took three lives. Killing the father is bad enough but when a "person" takes the life of, not one but two, innocent children, he gave up his right to live. I am appalled that his attorney feels that the stress from the up and coming execution is cruel and unusual. I have no problem with the death penalty other than it takes too long to carry out. If you want to consider me a murderer as well, I would be proud to proclaim it across the world! That being said, the other unfortunate part of any execution is the family of the criminal. Not only do they have to live with the horrible fact that their loved one committed a horrible crime, now they have to wait for the second their loved one dies. My heart and prayers do go out to them. I as a mother could not take knowing that my son was going to be executed at a very specific day and time. Brandon is a coward for doing this to his family. He should suck it up like the man he was at the time he committed these crimes and quit putting his family through this hell. How tormenting it must be to know your child is afraid. Please don't get me wrong, I want him to feel the fear that those babies and their father felt, he just doesn't need to drag his family down with him. I know there are people who believe that the family is to blame for raising him a certain way or not stopping him. Well, that isn't always the case. There are those that are born bad and I believe he was one of them. I hope the victims family can finally put all this to rest after tonight. At least there will be no more court hearings and they can now mourn their loved ones. God bless ALL the victims and I pray for peace to all.

I believe that what will happen will be what is meant to be. It does'nt matter if we think it right or wrong. Its what the laws dictate. People commit murders knowing there is a chance, if caught, they can face the death penalty. If they disregard the cosequences and a commit the crime, it is on them. Life is full of choices regardless of upbringing or circumstances. Good or bad you have to live with those choices and their consequences.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Ted Strickland on Monday postponed the execution of a convicted killer who managed to take an overdose of pills in his death row cell and was found unconscious just hours before he was to be driven to his execution.
A week later: Ohio killer Lawrence Reynolds was pronounced dead at 10:27 AM 03-16-2010 in the execution chamber of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.
Reynolds was convicted of murdering (by strangling and beating with a tent pole), robbing and attempting to rape 67 year old Loretta Foster in 1994 for drinking money.

There are alot of should be’s,could be’s and would be’s on here. I am a Christian and was brought up knowing right from wrong. My family taught me that. I also was brought up to know that you have to answer to the decisions that you make. I am not filled with hatred toward this man or what he has done although these murders hit really close to home. I believe that God takes care of what needs to be done. Do I agree that Mr. Rhodes needs to have the ultimate punishment? YES! I also agree that this would be an easy way out for him. I hate the fact that he will not have to live 20 more years with the guilt (if he really has any) of what he has done. I wish that he could be sat in a jail cell with no windows and vivid grotesque pictures of what he has done to these people. And have to look at these and hear sounds of people pleading and begging for their lives and to smell a smell of pugent rotting flesh 24 hours a day! All of this with no other human communications until it makes him so crazy that he wish he were dead! That is what I wish for this man. Maybe that wouldn’t be as CRUEL AND UNUSUAL as just plain out killing him! Or maybe it would!

The fact is the vast majority of abused children don't go on to commit first any first degree murders, let alone three. Killing the father is bad enough but when a “person” takes the life of, not one but two, innocent children, he gave up his right to live. I am appalled that his attorney feels that the stress from the up and coming execution is cruel and unusual. I have no problem with the death penalty other than it takes too long to carry out. If you want to consider me a murderer as well, I would be proud to proclaim it across the world! That being said, the other unfortunate part of any execution is the family of the criminal. Not only do they have to live with the horrible fact that their loved one committed a horrible crime, now they have to wait for the second their loved one dies. My heart and prayers do go out to them. I as a mother could not take knowing that my son was going to be executed at a very specific day and time. Brandon is a coward for doing this to his family. He should suck it up like the man he was at the time he committed these crimes and quit putting his family through this hell. How tormenting it must be to know your child is afraid. Please don’t get me wrong, I want him to feel the fear that those babies and their father felt, he just doesn’t need to drag his family down with him. I know there are people who believe that the family is to blame for raising him a certain way or not stopping him. Well, that isn’t always the case. There are those that are born bad and I believe he was one of them. I hope the victims family can finally put all this to rest after tonight. When the intruders heard Kristin approaching the house, Rhode forced her to a chair and shot her twice with a pistol, according to court records. Rhode ambushed Steven Moss when he arrived home, shooting him with the same pistol. Lucas later shot each of the victims again to make sure they were dead, according to the records.
At the February 2000 trial, Rhode's roommate Chad Jackson said the two men told him the next day that they had both shot the victims. And Danny Ray Bell, a friend of Rhode's, told police that Rhode told him he had “messed up big time'' and shot a girl and a man and needed to quickly get rid of some weapons.

In 1970 at the age of 18 I was raped in my home during a robbery. During the course of which I had a gun placed to the back of my head and was subsequently beaten for resisting. The perpretator was caught -given 5 years and served a little over 2. Soon after his release my new marriage broke up (I was a total basket case and should have never married) Approx. 4 yrs after he was released he was shot and killed during another home invasion- It was the first time in more than 6 yrs, I slept through an entire night, After that night I began to heal.I can actually say it was one of the happiest days of my life. I was fearing for my sanity. I have gone on to be a productive member of society.

WTG Pamela Ricer. This is all a difficult thing from either side of the fence you are on but this just feels right from a human standpoint to me and everyone in my circle of many many friends and family that i have discussed in detail this subject with for weeks now. Not a single one has when it got down to it said this thing should live on the planet with us one more day and thats the voice of hundreds. Thats 100% death penalty for this thing called Brandon Rhodes. My wife went to school in jones county and knew the victims and the total waste of humans that did the crime and she as well as the rest of the county were changed forever by this.

This is all a difficult thing from either side of the fence you are on but this just feels right from a human standpoint to me and everyone in my circle of many many friends and family that i have discussed in detail this subject with for weeks now. Not a single one has when it got down to it said this thing should live on the planet with us one more day and thats the voice of hundreds. Thats 100% death penalty for this thing called Brandon Rhodes. My wife went to school in jones county and knew the victims and the total waste of humans that did the crime and she as well as the rest of the county were changed forever by this.
I wish I could donate/join etc… to Amnesty International for some of the good things they do, but I will never give a dime. I will never donate one minute to an organization that goes to such lengths for a multi-child murdering evil "man" like Rhodes and so many others on death row. Drop that and your terrorist sympathizing campaigns and I'd support the other causes.
It is a shame.

The Bears and the Braves won! Pam, I’m sorry that you had to go through such a violent crime, but I’m glad to hear that you are at a good point in your life because that evil person is dead.
