Celebs, Politicans Rally to Stop Troy Davis Execution

Hundreds of thousands of individuals around the world have already spoken out against the execution of Troy Davis.  Now prominent politicians, celebrities and high profile people are joining in to stop the execution of a possibly innocent man.

    The removal of capital punishment from the Canadian Criminal Code in 1976 has not led to an increase in the murder rate in Canada. In fact, Statistics Canada reports that the murder rate has generally been declining since the mid-1970s. In 2009, the national murder rate in Canada was 1.81 homicides per 100,000 population, compared to the mid-1970s when it was around 3.0.

    I am proud to live in a country which does not have capital punishment. Statistics prove that it in no way deters murder. Besides, the statistics, it is morally wrong. How do you justify the possibility of putting a potentially innocent man to death. Even if someone is guilty, the majority of citizens here are horrified at the thoughts of capital punishment. The Canadian legal system is not perfect and we have had our own wrongful convictions. Thankfully, with new evidence, men and women have been released to rejoin their families, been compensated and have a chance to rebuild their lives. There is too much doubt in the case of Troy Davis. He shouldn't even be in prison, if there is doubt of his guilt. Innocent until proven guilty. Not the other way around.

    I will sign the petition, not only for Troy Davis, but to send a message that I believe capital punishment is unjust.

Mr.Obama should be asked to intervene.At least so these new allegations are proven to be true or of no merit.It saddens me that the pardon and parole board in Georgia has ignored the recent proceedings.May God have mercy on their souls and those who have accused him,if he is truly not guilty.

  18. I am not entirely opposed to the death penalty in theory. I'm opposed to an unjust US legal system that targets the economically poor, under educated, and most often brown ppl of all shades. Because of that, I cant support the death penalty as a practice in the world today. This case contains too many discrepencies. He should have, at the very least, been granted a new trial YEARS ago. Now its just time to set him free.

  21. I have written two messages to the White House this evening begging Barack Obama to grant clemency to Troy as I believe he is the only person who can stop this savage act of inhumanity. I am an ordinary middle-aged woman from London opposed to capital punishment in any case. The fact that Troy may be innocent just makes it worse. Shame on the State of Georgia and the USA. I pity the executioner. It's a very sad day for the human race.

  22. I am not entirely opposed to the death penalty in theory. I’m opposed to an unjust US legal system that targets the economically poor, under educated, and most often brown ppl of all shades.   24. As a citizen of this country I do not agree with the death sentence from a moral stand point as well as an economic stand point. You have a job thanks to my vote and tax contribution, and as your boss I am telling you that I do not approve the actions you are taken. There is a Spiritual Law that is above your Law, and you will answer to that Law sooner of later.
