Live Online Chat On Egypt Crisis

Update: Read a transcript of the chat

Violence on 2 February appeared to be orchestrated in part by the authorities © Nasser Nouri

Join us Friday, Feb 4th from 1:00-2:00 PM EST for a live online chat on Facebook with Amnesty International on the crisis in Egypt.

Geoffrey Mock, Egypt Country Specialist for Amnesty International USA, will be on hand to provide answers on the escalating situation that has brought the nation to a standstill. For over 17 years Geoffrey has worked with Amnesty to support human rights defenders, end unfair trials and torture in Egypt and defend Egypt’s civil society against harassment and legal attacks.

Protests in Egypt continue to rage on, centering around Tahrir (“Liberation”) Square in Cairo. Thousands of Egyptians are demonstrating against widespread corruption, police brutality and poverty in their country. Countless protesters have been killed and scores have been injured in the demonstrations, and journalists working in the country have been detained and threatened by the police for their coverage of the historic events.

  1. I'm not sympathetic to Mubarak but the jubilance I'm hearing about political destabilisation in the Middle East is a worry. Do we really think the political collapse of Egypt is something to celebrate? Just fast forward a few years after the Shah of Iran was deposed; or Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany…I'd hardly say the Iranians' lot has improved and, at conservative estimates, 60 million people – many of them German – died in the war that resulted from the power vaccuum created in Germany post WW1…to say nothing of the current situation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is not the fall of the Berlin Wall: they had the democratic, economic powerhouse of Europe to step in and protect ordinary people. What have the Egyptians got?

  2. question for Geoffrey Mock:

What is your honest opinion on this video clip ?

It is from an interview with Muhammad Ghanem, senior Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood representative in London, which aired on Al-Alam TV on January 30, 2011:
    http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/2787.htm

Here is what Muhammad Ghanem said at the end of this video clip:

” The next step … must include halting passage through the Suez Canal, stopping the supply of petroleum and natural gas to Israel, and preparing for war with Israel. ”

  3. from my friend/peace activist in Cairo/Giza (he chatted this yesterday morning Cairo time):

    please tell everyone about it
they will kill thousands of opposition
    I cannot believe it!

    civillian dressed thugs and police
    with firbombs, teargas bombs
    guns
    machetes
    and knives
attacking on horses and all night
    thousands of unarmed protestors"

  11. Have you ever thought about, using an own infrastructure for such things and not facebook? Can you imagine, that there are people out there, who are not using it?
Does AI think, using a private infrastructure is the right thing, for political (public) issues???

But still, thanks for the work that you are doing.

  13. Maybe if the idiots would not be over there and minded their own business there would not be a problem- that is the trouble in the world especially the U.S. is people here have to stick their noses in other countries business-especially the gov with telling all way to live plus giving our money (lots of it) away instead of taking care of our own people and also keeping our borders closed so no more can come in as we are full to the brim and I feel if any try to come in deal with them for permanent keep-out. There are enough children here and adults but these idiots keep adopting gook kids from china and elseware- this has to stop.

  14. People are afraid of Muslim Brotherhood but they ve changed.Nobody should scare of them. This is wishes freedom.Mobarek wants to keep his chair by scaring western society.

  15. nedim:
The Muslim Brotherhood has not changed .

The Muslim Brotherhood says they will take Egypt to war with Israel.

    This is a fact.
Anyone who says any different is a dirty liar.

There will be tens of millions of civilians dead on both sides.
Both Egypt and Israel will be destroyed.

The Muslim Brotherhood will bring 1000 times the suffering and poverty for the Egyptian people than Mubarak ever did.

  16. why i cant feel in Amnesty in these lively events ,
future of middle east is refounded in midde east ,

  25. All I know is they're sending Marines over there to deal with this stupid ordeal. Except they aren't giving us any room to make changes, we are there acting like mall cops. Our government doesn't want to change the current system, because that would require us to get involved yet again, in an extensive rebulding of a middle east nation. And as far as the Muslim Brotherhood, if we get the go ahead, we can and will kill them all. Total war is the only proven tactical strategy against insurgency, it's not going to bring stability to the area for a while, but it is what's necessary. I'll go, but I wanna shoot some bodies, as soon as we decide that we are going to stop playing nice, this will be over in 2 weeks.

  27. US Marine, you sound like a psychopath with little education, intelligence, or sympathy.

Just what the US Armed Services enjoys in a soldier. I am sorry that you either joined because you no other options, or that you are a psychotic person.

Please get help, or stop fighting for a country that disregards its own laws everyday.
