Sri Lanka: What's happened to Pattani Razeek?

Pattani Razeek, a Sri Lankan human rights defender, has been missing since he was apparently abducted on February 11 in the town of Polonnaruwa.  He may have been taken by the security forces or a group allied to them, and could be at risk of torture or other ill-treatment.  Please write the Sri Lankan government and ask them to investigate his disappearance.  Thanks.

  1. Violence is not the solution to problems in life.

Only peaceful solutions stabilize conditions to create trust across the dissenting parties.

  3. Wat's the use of writing to Rajapkse, he himself would have ordered to abduct and kill this Human rights defender. He hates people who work for peace. Didn't he kill uncountable innocent Tamils using cluster weapons and white phosporus???

First Srilanka government should be tried and punished (including Rajapakse n his opponet Fonseka ) for its war crimes against in the International court. Only then common singhala people can have reliable leaders for them. No hope for Tamils in Island.

  5. Yet another decent human being, Pattani Razeek, has been apparently abducted.

And of course he is at high risk of torture or other ill-treatment !!!!!!

It is funny to compare this current situation of Sri Lanka State of terror with the another reign of terror (bheeshanaya) in the late 1980s, which was started by J.R.Jayawardene and continued by R.Premadasa, around 60,000 Sinhalese were tortured, disappeared and killed by the state.

At that time, Rajapaksa collected evidence of these crimes and took them to the international community, the UN. For doing this, he was called a ‘traitor’.

Now it is Rajapaksa’s own repressive regime that is guilty of torture, disappearances and killings, of Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims.

And he is the one who calls anyone offering to give evidence of these crimes to the international community ‘traitors’!

  6. Yes, Velu

Mahinda Rajapaksa seems to have learned how to deal with pro-democracy monks from his friend Than Shwe, the brutal Burmese dictator.

Now he is acting as if he is the sole representative of Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. Journalists are being abducted, arrested, assaulted and killed in order to clamp down on freedom of expression.

Anyone who disagrees with Rajapaksa or poses a challenge to his absolute power is called a ‘traitor’, and is victimised or killed.

This includes Sarath Fonseka and his supporters are being victimised, and the millions of people who voted for him are being called ‘traitors’.

If Rajapaksa manages to get a two-thirds majority in parliament by using intimidation and fraud, he will eliminate the last remnants of democracy in Sri Lanka.

That, of course, would be a disaster for all Sri Lankans including Tamils

  9. i find Velu's comments illuminating.

    Thank you, Velu.

Tamils understand better than anyone else what's happening now to the Sinhalese themselves !!

Sri Lankan Intelligence Infiltrates Facebook – Gota behind the move

According to informed sources within Sri Lankan intelligence, Sri lankan intelligence officials are now infiltrating on facebook to collect information on supporters of Sarath Fonseka and critics of Mahinda Rajapakse.
The idea of facebook infiltration is a brainchild of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse.

Defence Secretary had given orders to redirect this project to collect information on dissenting groups including supporters of Gen. Fonseka and Ranil Wicramasighne.

These facebook stalker teams consists of Army Intelligence officers and officers from N.I.B. These operatives pose as attractive females to unsuspecting facebook users and add them as friends. Once they befriend the victim, they collect their information and add them to their database.

The legal commentators claim that this operation is a serious threat to the online privacy in Sri Lanka. They also urged the Sri Lankan facebook users to exercise cautions when using facebook.

  12. The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) will protect the human rights of the Tamils in Sri Lanka and is the springboard on which we are going to build our future structure.

GTF launch saw delegates from 14 countries gather in the UK House of Commons to be addressed by speakers from across the political spectrum, including parliamentarians, councilors and prospective parliamentary candidates.

Some Tamil delegates were also invited in for a private meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

  13. Statements are worth no more than the paper on which they are printed.

If they UK can impose trade sanctions, as it has done with Iran, Burma and North Korea, more than 100, 000 Sinhalese will be unemployed. Including their dependants, 500, 000 Sinhalese will be forced to change their attitudes towards Tamil welfare, as it will be the only way to get their job back.

  14. Anything that doesn't happen before the elections will never happen.

Now is the only time they have reason to appease Tamils.

If we are going to waste our bargaining chips of photo-ops, that'll be all.

Labour can't do anything post May, that it didn't/couldn't do before then.

It has no incentive to please Tamils for another few years, once we've all voted

  15. I recommend caution. 🙂

I don't think we should believe that just because PM and FM attended GTF meeting, life for Tamils would be any different.

We should have learned from Obama will save the oppressed slogans of last year and Miliband's own freedom of movement comments of a few months later.

Any block vote by Tamils to Labour must be properly negotiated and should have set actions as prerequisites.

Given that it was Labour that banned TRO, arrested Tamils, gave GSP+, gave weapons to Sri Lanka and now funds the internment camps, I will be voting Conservatives.

Photo ops alone won't convince me. 🙂 :0

Neither should they convince any other right thinking Tamil.

  16. U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, provided the following statement which was read at the Global Tamil Forum inaugural event in London on Wednesday.

"As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on South Asia, I have examined the unfortunate effects of the conflict in Sri Lanka. I have sought to shed light on the plight of internally displaced people and the importance of development in post-conflict Sri Lanka. As Americans, we will continue to seek opportunities to play a constructive role in post-conflict Sri Lanka. As Sri Lanka heals from the horrors of war, it will also require that the Tamil population in and outside the country play a key role in the development of Sri Lanka’s infrastructure as well as its social fabric."

"I want to thank the Global Tamil Forum for its efforts to support the democratic process in Sri Lanka, especially during this difficult time in the country’s history. I hope that the Sri Lankan people will be able to come together and focus on a common future that moves beyond war, terrorism and violence as means of political expression.

"I also want to applaud the work of the U.S. Tamil Political Action Council. USTPAC has raised awareness of the humanitarian crisis facing the Tamil people in Sri Lanka and has played a constructive role in educating U.S. policymakers. I look forward to our continued cooperation and wish you a successful forum in London."

All those memories flooded my heart …

    Today, there is no ‘LTTE’.

There is no longer an excuse to kill, imprison, rape, torture the Tamils.

The Tamil people are THE ONLY ONES who are SUFFERING!!!

Tamils are being killed, massacred, slaughtered & tortured. – for more than 60 years!

Tamil homes, businesses, schools, libraries, temples, churches, universities, cultural buildings destroyed by Sinhalese Army ..

Tamils are living in fear in Sri Lanka.

They have a very miserable life.

    – Tamils are afraid of the Sri Lankan Police & Army.

    – Tamils are living in fear of Sinhala Thugs, Criminals: ex-Sinhala Army Soldiers who deserted Sri Lankan Army

    – Tamils are living in fear of Kidnappers. Most are kidnapped at random by Sri Lankan Intelligence Agency (Secret Police) and tortured for information

    – Thousands of innocent Tamils languish in prisons today.

  28. Next to JaffnaCity's dependence on "official" promises, Velu's counsel of offering the community's votes only on preconditions is cannier.

But voting Conservative ? Purely as reprisal ? You should have prepoll negotiated preconditions here as well. With the Tamils speaking in unity, even if not in one single voice.

  30. Democracy has a way to express patriotism, national self determination and the acceptance of an overriding sense of common good as a standard of loyalty.

The purpose of it is preservation and separate development.

This principle was well understood and agreed by all the citizens as foundations for our freedom, when they – Muslims, Tamils and Sinhalese -accepted the partial independence of dominion status for Ceylon in 1948.

The two major political parties, the UNP and the SLFP, repeatedly in power since 1948, failed to practice true democracy and accountability.

Greed and corruption overcame accountability and a type Sinhala totalitarianism replaced true democracy.

In Ceylon, where even the Buddhist clergy did not follow the teachings of Buddha, about 60 percent of the people called themselves “Budddhists” – not because they chose Budddhism as the best way of life but because of their accidental birth to “Buddhist” parents – and ventured into an evil path of hatred of anti-Tamilism to bring about enormous destruction we have faced in the country since 1948.

Presently, Budddhism in Sri Lanka(SL) has metamorphosed into a type of atheism. It may be difficult to find about 5 perecnt of the population still believing and following the teachings of Buddha.

Therefore, any claim by the “Buddhist majority” is untrue and does not hold water any more.

The young Sinhalese must understand this reality and work during the upcoming parliamentarian elections, to establish true democracy, in a way to express patriotism for all the inhabitants in the island and self determination for the Tamil people
