President Obama Extends TPS to Haitians

This afternoon Janet Napolitano, Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, announced that the administration will extend temporary protected status to Haitians in the US. Providing work authorization through a TPS designation empowers Haitians to share responsibility for the relief and rebuilding of their own country, and it enables the US to meet its human rights obligations under international law and standards. AIUSA commends the administration for its generous and prompt humanitarian response to the disaster that is unfolding in Haiti. Haitians fleeing persecution or other serious human rights violations have a right to seek protection in the US. Accordingly, we hope that in the coming days the administration will also suspend the policy on interdiction during this time of crisis.

  7. Well, isn't that nice? My heart goes out to the Haitians and those who suffered losses, especially of their loved ones.

  9. Finally, Americans are showing us that they care about international human rights! I commend President Obama for acting decisively and doing a fabulous job holding the responsibility of being the world's largest superpower well! Really, putting Bush to shame and making the world proud! Bravo!
    My thoughts and goodwill to the Haitians right now- perhaps this is a blessing in disguise? Just the time for them to assemble a government that treats its people right!

  11. Sarnata Reynolds & Amnesty's done a catastrophically sloppy job of reporting the "Temporary Protective Status" matter IN THE CONTEXT OF the question of the nature of US aid to Haiti .

    Amnesty & Reynolds have avoided the ESSENTIAL & PRIMARY ASPECT of the US relationship with Haiti —

    1 ) the USA's support of the coup that ousted the Haitian leader Aristide, & its bringing to power of the present US -dependant puppet government ( Honduras, then, wasn't the only current pro – US coup casualty );

    2 )the US – engineered occupation ( prior to the earthquake & then some ) of Haiti by the UN's military force of MINUSTAH, an army of rapists & killers that keeps the Haitian people's movement suppressed;

    3 ) the USA's role in propping up the very system of inefficient corruption that (a )devastated Haiti's agriculture ( by flooding the country with US imports ), (b)enabled an industry of substandard & shoddy construction & housing ( straddling a lethal quake faultline ) which contributed massively to the present colossal loss of lives, & ( c ) has left the island at the mercy of an economy of exploitative sweatshops foisted on the people by Bill Clinton & American companies, an economy useless & ineffective today in the face of the catastrophe.

    Now the US Army's coming to take over the island, & the people will face a "Shoot – all – rioters – &_- looters !" regime just like the New Orleans Blacks did after Katrina.

    TPS i've nothing ( so far ) against — but i can't see the earthquake without seeing what came before it & what helped aggravate it to the level of a natural – cum – US – made disaster . Just as Katrina couldn't reap the havoc it did without the weakening of the levees by you know who & which system.

    So Amnesty & Reynolds, don't take it to heart if i don't join in your rush to hymn Obama in his new & latest experiment in disaster capitalism.
