I Would Like the Firing Squad, Please

Ronald Lee Gardner faces execution on June 18 in Utah.  The media has zeroed in on the fact that he has chosen the firing squad as his method of execution – which seems kind of hard core and old school given the lengths states have gone through to try to make executions appear “humane”.   Gardner’s exact words to judge were: “I would like the firing squad, please.”

Utah’s firing squad carried out the first execution of the so-called “modern” era of US capital punishment, when Gary Gilmore was shot in January 1977, six months after the US Supreme Court allowed executions to restart under new death penalty statutes.   Another prisoner, John Albert Taylor, was put to death by a Utah firing squad in 1996.

MVFMarchBut more important than Ronald Lee Gardner’s peculiar choice is the fact that the family and friends of his victim are opposed to his execution.  Gardner killed Michael Burdell, a defense attorney, during a 1985 courtroom escape attempt, but Burdell’s father, his girlfriend, and another friend all plan to testify on Gardner’s behalf if Utah’s Board of Pardons and Parole agrees to hold a clemency hearing.

State officials often claim that their support for the death penalty and executions is in part to honor the wishes and needs of victims’ families.  Will the state of Utah honor the wishes of this victim’s family and refrain from executing Ronald Lee Gardner?

  1. It doesnt matter what people protest for or agaisnt. The man did the crime and was found guilty. Now he needs to face the punishment. Period. He chose firing squad. End of story. The victim is probably rolling in his grave at the audacity of his family trying to get his killer off the hook. Its not about what familys want. Its about justice for the victim. At least this killer is facing his punishment like a man. More criminals should man up and take it since they sure feel the right to give it!

  2. Why are you still here, law-abiding citizen?! You are just one of the Pharisees supporters who hate sinners and punish them with death! You never care about human rights at all! 😡

  3. Why don't we ask the victim what he wants. Oh that's right, we can't because he was brutally murdered.

  7. Dear Debbie, gentle heart.

You know the crowd that always yells for blood, whipped on by the modernday political & pseudo-religious Pharisees .

You don't always have to talk to the lynchmob, my dear. The lynchmob's a fixture of class societies — they are always there in all societies divided into rich & poor, slaves & masters.

The lynchmob's programmed to follow the ruling Pharisees.

Speak beyond that crowd to the coming, budding future.

Leave your words for the new generations.

Do not doubt. They're listening to you.

  9. Ronald Lee Gardner may rest in peace after his execution, and meet his maker the old fashioned way despite protests. I have opposed capital punishment in the past on moral grounds, but my deepest condolences go out to the victims' families as they have suffered immeasurably.
Since the perp is in captivity, I see no reason why he should not suffer imprisonment without chance of parole. He has probably done all the harm he will do, and he can spend the rest of his natural born life apologizing for what he has done to innocent people. Death is probably too good for him.
The US Federal Government should be executing Foreign War Criminals of Iran, Libya and Syria, and prosecuting the illegal immigrants who pose as "Muslims" in NYCity and elsewhere, and help Gulf War Veterans suffering from PTSD, and not be overly concerned with The Mormon State's problems with criminal punishment. The United States citizens footing the bill for imprisonment are already taxed to death, and we are incarcerating too many for non-violent crimes like marijuana possession.
I ceratinly hope that I can protect, preserve and defend the Constitution and the American citizenry honorably again in the future, and that you will share my offer of public service through any and all available media. I am presently the Nassau County Executive Committee Chairman to the Constitution Party, and I have prosecuted Foreign War Criminals of Iran, Libya and Syria and their financial terrorist networks that support them on the Board of Directors of The Victims of Pan Am Flight #103, and have kept sanctions against the American companies that do business with Foreign War Criminals in violation of Federal Law: Exxon-Mobil, Amerada-Hess, Occidental Petroleum, Marathon Oil, Royal Dutch Shell, and BP. I need readers to send contributions made payable to: Dan Tobin, 115 Atlantic Ave Apt 2A, Hempstead, NY 11550-1204. Thanks in advance for your time and cooperation, and I look forward to working for you honorably again. Respectfully Yours in Freedom and Responsibility, Dan Tobin

  11. I dont understant, he CHOSE the firing squad and he commited a murder and was given the death sentance….. thats it, theres no going back you cant depend on the falimy of the victim who was murdered to make the choice. Its the states choice and I feel that if you murder someone, you no longer have the "human rights" that apply to the same people that live their lives correctly and abide by the law so that argument gets throw out.
PS i bet if you were to ask the guy he would WANT to be given the firing squad, and to ASSUME that he has done all the wrong he will in this world is why criminals that are released on parole commit other crimes and are sentanced to life in prison, which sucks i would much rather be killed than live life in prison, and thats MY "human right" to choose weter i want to continue living or not so im sorry your argument backfired you free hugging fuckers

  12. @ debbie kearns
punishing sinners by death if the caused death upon anotjher person is what the bible and the law says to do……. idiot. you want to argue like you are a fundamental christian and that you care about other people but that just gets you wrong on 2 different degrees….
