Day of Remembrance: Troy Davis Lives

The state of Georgia shocked the world when it took Troy Davis’ life last Wednesday. But in the wake of that outrage, the movement to end the death penalty has only grown in numbers and energy.

We have heard innumerable stories of consciousness raising and transformation. People did not go home from the various protests despondent. Like us, they have committed to not forgetting what happened and are emboldened, redoubling efforts to end the callous system that has demonstrated it has no business taking human life.

On Saturday, October 1, join us for a Day of Remembrance.

Join us in Savannah for Troy Davis’ funeral. The service is open to the public, but media cameras will not be permitted:

October 1, 11am
“Celebration of Life Service”

For those of you who cannot make it to Savannah, please wear an “I am Troy Davis” t-shirt or black armband with “Not in my name” written on it and change your Facebook profile picture to this image:

  5. I dont believe that Troy Davis died in vain and he isnt the first to do in GA remember Lena Bake who was the first and only black woman to be executed. In the state of GA Troy may have been that John the baptist who was also shut in prison and beheaded for no reason. Troy may be use for such a time like this. To wake up a nation to the punishment of death by lethal injection. This is injustice to all those who have died innocently on death row. Our nation needs to wake up to the out cry of this way of punishment. Laws in all states needs to change.

  6. I just want to say to the Davis family keep your head up keep God first in all that you do. Dont stop because Troy is gone. But fight until the laws in your state are change for all those on death row in your state especially those who have such a case as your brother's

  7. I dont believe that there was 11th hour appeals held for Troy, I believe that they delayed the execution until all those who were protesting went homein fear that there would be a roit of some sort. They never changed there mind and they never review his case it was determine by them all to put him to death.

  11. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Troy Davis. 12. This execution of Troy Davis has been weighing very heavy on me since last week, I have to admit i didn't know about his case until it hit the Media a week ago, I've read up on it since then and i must say Mr. Davis should have been given a new trial to prove his innocence , But due to the State being hell bent on killing this Black man accuse of killing a White man , Seems to me in this world we live in that "White is always Right" and personally that's the way it'll always be. To Troy Davis Family, I'm so so sorry to what has happen to him ,And my heart grieves for you in the very hard and sad time, I'm praying that God gives you Strength to go on Thru .. You are in my Thoughts and Prayers everyday, RIP Mr. Troy Davis !! They can kill the Body but Not the Soul…

  17. TROY DAVIS WAS A MARTYR – A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF COURAGE, AND ENDURANCE – OF GREAT STRENGTH, AND MOST IMPORTANT OF THE DEEP COMPASSION TO FORGIVE HIS ENEMIES, TO SAY GOD BLESS YOU TO THOSE WHO WERE ABOUT TO EXECUTE HIM.

WHO ELSE IN HISTORY STOOD SO TALL AT HIS DEATH. ONLY JESUS.
YOU WERE WELCOMED INTO GOD'S ARMS, TROY AND YOUR SPIRIT WILL LIVE FOREVER. WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU. WE WILL FIGHT INJUSTICE IN YOUR NAME FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES.
    SMILE NOW, YOU ARE HOME.

  18. Why is it that in the states where Christianity is most blatantly emblazoned on one's arms and most loudly professed — e.g., Georgia, Texas, South Carolina — behavior is most barbaric? The sheer hypocrisy of those who profess that human beings carry within them God' s sacred image and who, in their actions, totally ignore this ! ! When will these Southern states evolve morally and spiritually beyond the degradation of human life that they have perpetuated since their embrace of slavery? I am ashamed to live in the same nation with these people who even pervert justice to support the primitive barbarity of vengeful violence in the name of rule by law.. I am embarrassed at the image of the United States that these people present to the world. But I am proud to be of human kinship with Troy Davis who has set a standard for all of us to attain. May he now rest in peace and in the love of God's embrace.

  21. I just want to send the Davis family my love and prayers. I know that their faith is so strong that God will see them through this rough time and that they wil continue to fight in Troy's name. I admire them so much because they are such a strong and loving family. Troy and I communicated through letters and his letters gave me strength when I felt weak. He had so much faith and love for people. He was an amazing young man. I am glad that God put him into my life. Troy taught me how to hold on to my faith no matter what I was going through and God would make it alright. Troy will always be in my heart.

  22. Troy will be laid to rest. I wish today he was still here with us but the Lord used him for a greater purpose. R.I.P Troy.

  26. Like another commentor said , i was not aware of this until a couple days before the execution . I read upon the case & was enraged with what was goin on . My entire , and i mean my entire heart goes out to the Davis family . They dragged this case out for far too long , and still came up with the wrong solution . May you Rest in Peace Troy and may justice be found for you and your family .

  27. To the Davis Family: My heart is with you and I will do my part to abolish this barbaric ritual we call "justice". I live in a very conservative state…Oklahoma…and the only death penalty case that drew huge attention was that of Timothy McVeigh. While I could not shed tears for him; Troy Davis has inspired me to research further. I fully believe in Troy's innocence. It should be no man (woman's) decision to take another human life. I cannot be there Savannah in person on 10-1; but will be in spirit and will send a check for the family's fund. Anyone else reading; please do the same. We are all Troy Davis.

  28. I was deeply hurt when the state of Georgia took the life of Troy Davis. I became an activist for the abolishment of the death penalty over night. I will do all I can and all with in my power to work toward repealing this barbarism which is only rehearsed premeditated murder. He did not die in vain……..He lives and is the fuel of our struggle!!!!!!!1

  29. I was considered a valued employee at the prison where Troy Davis was lynched. I resigned the day of his murder to participate alongside the zealous protesters in efforts to elevate my voice and extend my firm resolve to not have the blood of troy davis on my hands or in my heart. NOT IN MY NAME, NOT ON MY WATCH!!!!!………….Troy you've only gone to sleep so others can WAKE UP!

  30. Shannon,

You are very brave and I thank you, as I'm sure we all do, for following your moral compass. Troy understood, as in his last statement, when he blessed prison employees souls, that he understood all were just doing their assigned duties; placed no individual fault; but implied one of a system in whole.

May you be blessed, find a job that you love, and know that you are in the prayers of many! I bet Amnesty International could use another employee!

  31. RIP Troy Davis. Deepest sympathies to his family and friend. His death will not be in vain but help end the barbaric death penalty.

  32. I always knew in my heart that Troy Davis was a innocent man. I seen it in his eyes. It saddens me to know that he was killed a week before my birthday. I will continue to fight for injustice which is something I always wanted to do that's why I am an inspiring lawyer. We will never know why God called him home but he is in a better place and will be walking around heaven all day. You're legacy will live on. See you when I get there. My prayers are with the Davis Family & everyone else affected. I AM TROY DAVIS.

  33. My heart and prayers go out to Troy Davis' family & friends. The fight will continue, and through this all, we will get justice. May God Bless his soul!

I didn't know Troy but followed this case for a long time, and signed the petitions, and I sent letters to the Governor of Georgia. I even faxed a letter
to the White House last wednesday afternoon. I prayed for them to spare his life and reopen the trial. And the fight will go on…Justice for Troy!

And I urge, everyone to send a letter to President Obama and Eric Holder. Let's not let another person's life be taken away from them…Capital punishment/execution laws need to be outlawed in all 50 states!

  34. I just want to send the Davis family my love and prayers. I know that their faith is so strong that God will see them through this rough time and that they wil continue to fight in Troy’s name. 37. I followed Mr. Davis' case for quite some time. I felt certain that in the end, justice would prevail, and he would be given a new trial. I was in shock when this did not happen. His execution was a travesty. Wrong, unjustified, savage and a blatant affirmation that in the USA, what passes for justice, what is ram-rodded through is not justice at all. How can we stand by and allow our system to go so far astray from anything remotely about justice??? Justice based merely upon what DA's, judges and mis-guided juror's decide that it is, shouldn't be tolerated. Justice based upon little more than a "feeling" those in power hold, over life and death, has no place in our society. None!

We are all wise to keep in mind that this could just as well have been any one of us here or someone we love/value highly. Mr. Davis' execution is an affront to human rights globally, a sham of justice in America and an utter embarrassment to any human being with an ounce of compassion about them.

My heart breaks for Mr. Davis' family and close friends and particularly for him. Not just for his wrongful death, but for the many years of suffering and pain they all endured in the course of this "joke of justice". There can never be any adequate compensation to them for this unnecessary crime of wrongful execution. Borne of a law enforcement system and a justice system with cart blanch to run roughshod over whomever they choose, regardless of anyone's PROVEN guilt. It's all nightmarish and it's all very real. We should all find ourselves not only outraged but sickened by this tragic saga and it's ultimate outcome. I can only hope that Mr. Davis' family will, in time, find some perspective and healing and a place of peace within their hearts.

We must carry the torch for justice and human rights bravely into the future, just as Troy Davis carried his sense of dignity unto his final breath. That was one thing they could not take from him! Even by killing him.

We must maintain hope for better laws and a better tomorrow for justice the world over. We must fight for right and we must speak out at every opportunity against the miscarriage of justice, the mistreatment of those arrested, those falsely accused/convicted, where ever and when ever it occurs. We must stand in staunch solidarity for those souls who cry silently in the night as their burdens become almost more than they can bear, while their spirits struggle to remain strong. For them, we must remain committed to positive change, until such time that injustice flourishes no more in the four corners of our world. We must stop the wholesale warehousing of human beings in prisons. We must work diligently to promote rehabilitation as the primary objective of those incarcerated.

In closing I believe the family of Officer MacPhail, surely cannot find any real peace in the fact that the guilt of the person executed for the murder of their loved one, was never proven and now, never can be. Rather, a dense, dark cloud of doubt will forever remain. That too, is a travesty. So many lives so adversely affected by such a miscarriage of justice.

  40. I believe that very soon the truth will be revealed and it will prove that they killed the wrong person when they killed Troy Davis on last Wednesday. What will the state of Georgia say? What will the families of the deceasd say? I'll tell you this much; it will be a sad day in Georgia when the truth hits the fan. As a Georgia resident, I am embarassed by the actions to take the life of a man who was never given a chance to prove his innocense. especially when they knew there was reasonable doubt since all but two witnesses recanted their stories. 49. I'm crying silently over here in Europe for the life of Troy Davis. How can such a proud nation like the US still allow to kill people in the name of justice? It's barbaric.

  52. I am extremely saddened with the death of Troy Davis.

I followed his case, and I hoped and believed firmly that he would be pardoned.

    I do not compend and do not accept that we punish by the death penalty somebody whom we accuse of the same act;
Did not Jesus said " you will not kill "?
I consider Troy, as another Christ … peace in his soul.

I think of him daily, and suffer it immaginant " the fatal moment "…
I present to his family, my sincere condolences, by accompanying her with my thoughts and prayers.

  55. This institutional way to take somebody's life after so many years and without real proof is MURDER.
I am very schocked and blame this system. A well "oiled machine" that slowly leads to the ultimate issue…. death … after unhuman years alternation of uncertainty , fear, terror also for the relatives.
The decision of the State of Georgia is very unwise because this case will blaze up a fire of public indignation in the whole world. Shame on you who have decided and have committed this blunder.
God bless Troy Davis and his family ! Yes I am Troy Davis !

The decision of the State of Georgia is very unwise because this case will blaze up a fire of public indignation in the whole world. Shame on you who have decided and have committed this blunder.
God bless Troy Davis and his family ! Yes I am Troy Davis !
Capital punishement abolished in ALL STATES

    Paul Brussels Belgium

  57. Thank you to all the beautiful souls who take the time to pledge to never forget Troy Davis. I understand and feel your pain and the ache in my own heart only grows as the days pass. Knowing you are there, all over the world, and that you also care so deeply, helps a great deal.
I agree that God accepted the sacrifice of Troy for a greater purpose and that he was welcomed and embraced into God's arms at his death. His last words of forgiveness to his murderers makes him a martyr and a true hero in the image of Jesus Christ. Wow, as the song says, we "would have loved him anyway". Now however, his death has become a monumental, earth changing event. Rest, Troy, Be with God.

  58. I took one solace after Troy Davis' murder by the state of Georgia and those last agonizing hours one week ago today: his losing battle to remain alive will do more than any one organization can to bring about abolition of capital punishment, AND, Troy himself knew that.

  59. My sincerest condolences to you the family fo Troy Davis. I share your grief and outrage and pray fervently that Troy's death will be used as a catalyst to abolish the death penalty in the USA. To all supporters of TROY lets keep hope alive and continue our united fight to save others on death row. "Liberty and Justice for ALL."

  66. I'm outraged that the state of Georgia insisted on executing Troy Davis even though there was new evidence that could have proved his innocence. They refused to listen, they didn't want to hear it. That is just one aspect of what's wrong with having a death penalty. It's so arbitrary, and is carried out on the whim of who ever has the power to do so. In this case it was the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles. Over the last few years, I've become very aware of Georgia's system, where this board has sole authority to grant a condemned person clemency. I had heard that some of the persons who sit on this Board were formerly police officers, and the same officers that had coerced testimony from young witnesses that night in 1989. They had an interest in not having a re-trial, and having that fact come out in a trial.

I'm also outraged that the Governor, the President, and the District Attorney could not or would not to anything about it. A person was being systematically murdered by the state of Georgia, and we all had to watch helplessly.

I'm ashamed that our country is still using such a barbaric system. All of the European and South American countries have abolished the death penalty, but there is so much blood lust in this country, that many people still support it, even though it's been shown that innocent people have been executed, then found to be innocent when it's too late.

My heart goes out to Troy's family. They had been dealing with this for so long, only to have it end this way. Troy not only lost his life last week, but his entire youth was taken away from him, he spent it on death row, for a crime that he probably did not commit.

RIP Troy, I won't forget you.

  68. This whole thing hit home with me as I lived & went to school in Jackson. Having lived in California 38 years now, I remember coming up in a racist family. It tore me up to witness the continued attitudes of, as Martina puts it, the Old South. I hurt so much for what Troy had to endure & for what the Davis Family must endure. I desperately wish I could turn back the hands of time to stop this horrible murder. More than ever I am in solidarity with all the people standing to abolish the death penalty. One taken life is one too many. Much appreciation to Amnesty International. Much sympathy & loving wishes to the very brave & strong Davis Family. May the love of Troy & all the mourners embrace you & keep you well. Take care.

  72. I am Troy Davis. I followed this thread in a couple of weeks back and to be honest, i do not believe and will never come to terms that DEAD PENALTY IS KEY. its strange that it looks like a white against black (racism) . I am surprise that such still exist. we will take solace that Troy is sleeping and we will join him one day. RIP TROY . i also pray that may the good Lord comfort your family . Amen

  73. I am sorry that I cannot attend as I live in the UK. I will be there in spirit and you will all be in my heart. I add my letter that was printed in my local newspaper "The Northern Echo"
Sending you love and strength for Saturday and for ever.
    Not in our Name!

"It’s common for news stories to render me incandescent with rage. Stupid politicians, cruel parents, selfish criminals, brutal murderers, greedy bankers regularly have me heckling the TV or slinging my newspaper in disgust. Not today. News that, after an agonising 4 hour suspension, the State of Georgia, had carried out the ritualised murder of Troy Davis left me feeling hollow. I'm angry, but can't work out who I'm most angry with; Georgia, the Supreme Court or the conspicuous absence of America's first black president.
    .
Amnesty International ran a clear, passionate but ultimately unsuccessful mercy campaign. Thousands emailed, tweeted, facebooked and prayed with unprecedented urgency to no avail. A gang of vengeful Georgia bigots denied clemency and another black American was murdered by his government. Insult added to injury by the belief that Troy was innocent.

The murder of innocent black Americans by the state isn't rare and their system's brutality will ensure Troy's not the last. Don't let him die for nothing, Sign Amnesty's "Not in my Name" pledge. Together we must rid the "civilised" world of the death penalty once and for all.
Nothing can bring an executed man back to life.
    Troy Davis RIP."

  75. In the book of Isaiah 55:8, God says for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. God in his infinite wisdom joined the life of Troy Davis and Officer McPhail before they were born to show forth his glory in the earth. One died a cruel death 22 years ago, and one died a cruel death September 21, 2011. Both were innocent. In due season God's purpose will be revealed in the natural, for His thoughts are higher than man's.

Thank you God … the goal has been achieved and many of us are not just happy but Very Happy that that murderous scum has been executed. However, many of us also mourn for the victims of this murderous scum’s crime. Those of us who actually recognize the true victim as opposed to you bleeding-heart socialist liberals.

And for all who want to bash the police, courts and such … why don’t you tell us who the murder was instead of standing at the finish line and sceam bloody murder for the bloody murderer. Tell us who murdered this young father and police officer … and give us the proof.

    Didn’t think so ……………………

Why are you all focusing on the murderer? Why no concern or long-winded, bitter, finger-pointing, accusation filled rants for the victim of this murderous scum. Why not be concerned for the police officer and his survivors? Sure, a few of you will utter a brief word or sentence about them but then back to how horrible it is that this murderer is an angel and the world is all wrong?

Law enforcement got it right, the courts got it right and with God’s help, the soul of troy davis got put right where it belongs – in the burning depths of hell.

I thank God for the poison used to put this worthless excuse for a human being to death. Thank God for the execution of troy davis. And may God watch over the selfless and ever-watchful eyes of the courts and law enforcement who got it right again.

  81. I honestly believe Troy's murder is the catalyst for major change in our country. I hope that everyone who is outraged over his murder takes action instead of just saying, "Oh it's awful," but never doing anything to prevent this from happening again. I, too, have been distraught over what happened to Troy. My heart bleeds for his family and I think he is one of the bravest people to face what he faced and all the while never giving up hope and never turning bitter. Remember Troy Davis and fight with all your might to end the death penalty!

  82. And to Obert Emillio…. get your facts straight. How can you make such a vile comment? Even Troy himself didn't harbor that much hatred for those who were taking his life. And you, who seemingly don't even know him or the victim, or their families, hate him that much?

Those of you who worship at the feet of this satan like entity must deal with that on your own. However, I am so pleased that the system worked and this world is minus one evil, murderous scum.

  91. Here in France,

    It is 16 heures 57 = near 11 am …
And I think to you Troy … I am you … on the Web, I went to see the church where your body is coming …

I imagine your family accompanying you for your last journey, as well as the crowd of world being with you.

    I am far: in the South of France, but nothing can separate the spirits which can cross Oceans and have no border who prevent them from moving;
So, I think of being near you, with everybody and I am again going to look at the photo of the church where your body is arriving, and I am going to light a candle, in your honor so that your parents and friends receive from the comfort…

Be happy in the New World in which you have just been received … in which only a true love exists, and NO MORE RACISM (I am so sorry that this fact continues on the earth )…

I really hope that quite whole America is going to stop killing the suspects as well as the murderesses it is so hideous!

That God helps your family as well as your friends…
I wish you to LIVE ETERNALLY HAPPY now,
YOU WHO SPENT MOST OF YOUS LIVE IN PRISON, BY MISTAKE …

Peace in your soul Troy, I shall not forget you!

But evil lies in the hearts of the foolish so be it.

  97. If you do not believe that reasonable doubt is a credible reason for exercising restraint in killing someone, than let he who is without sin – any sin – cast the first stone.

  98. @ Scott – you hit the nail on the head. Though they march, cry, whine and pray for this murderous scum; a piece of evil garbage who murdered two young men, one a police officer, they fail to be consistent with their outrage since they do not have the ability to do so.

They carry with them a huge amount of guilt … and they feel it will somehow make themselves feel justified for walking this earth if they worship at the foot of this murderous scum because he was black.

You DID NOT see them crying, marching, protesting or screaming for the govorners head for the execution of Lawrence Russell Brewer. Brewer was executed for the grisly 1998 murder of Mr. James Byrd in Jasper, Texas.

Lawrence Russell Brewer, like Troy Davis, was nothing more and nothing less than a vicious murderer. And, I agree that they both deserved to be executed.

Where was the outrage from these morons for Brewer? They cannot reasonably answer that except to say Brewer was guilty and Davis was not. But this is not the reason for their illogical reaction. It had to do with race and only race. They go as far as to say that Davis was executed because he was a black man and the two innocent men he executed were white. Sad, sad, sad excuse.

I thank God for allowing troy davis to finally pay for his heinous and evil deeds. Thank you God for executing that murderous scum.

  103. There is far more evidence now that Sylvester Coles was, in fact, the trigger-man than there is that Troy was. Coles admitted as much to several people who later signed affidavits. Before anyone jumps to the conclusion that Troy was guilty of the crimes for which he was convicted, s/he should read all of Amnesty International's documentation of the case. Amnesty won a Nobel prize for that documentation.

I exchanged letters with Troy for over two years, and during that time, Troy always urged me to pray for the MacPhails. Troy had empathy for their loss, but he did not shoot Officer MacPhail.

How does Scott know that Coles was not the triggerman. Was Scott with Coles at the time? Was he with Troy at the time?

  105. I was a former police officer so i know how the black community views these cases. The police dept is always corrupt, trying to frame some innocent black man.
This case was thoughly reviwed all the way to the supreme court.Like I said
before, the way he said I did not "personally" kill officer McPhail shows a
Freduien slip.I think people in other countries that dont have the death penalty
really have no true understanding how and why its still used in the US.Our
culture unfortunatly is filled with sociopaths and others who commit some
very violent crimes;there are several states that have convicted people for
murder then released them after maybe 20 years, knowing full well there
is no question of guilt, but say your time is up.I say until all states institute full life sentences, some cases will require the death penalty.

  107. I am disgusted by the hatred inherent in the above posts. Such anger frightens me and I wonder why? nobody on this earth is perfect, without sin or fault, or correct at all times. That is why the death penalty needs to be abolished. It is irrevocable.

For the supremacists of the world…white, black, religious, anything…..you are missing out on something beautiful….liberty, justice, harmony, goodness…I could go on and on.

Please…can't be all just wish goodness for one another. The world would be a much better place.

Mock my idealism if you wish….but I choose to believe in good vs. evil

  109. Maurine, to you I say thanks for the comfirmation that Im doing the right thing….It wasnt a chore or a hardship as my undeserved blessings will always see me through. It was my duty as a conscious citizen to do the right thing as those "direct circumstances" would not have allowed my conscience to remain settled…..May all those like yourself be blessed in your efforts to abolish this criminal act…..

  111. A month has passed since Troy's execution. Let's keep our promise to one another to never forget; and our best to abolish the practice of the death penalty in The United States. Our lives go on….Troy's does not. We must continue to be his voice. We are all Troy Davis.

Shannon, God Bless You and your family. I hope life finds you happy in a new job. And yes, our many undeserved blessings are called grace; and you are much deserving in my mind. Your Friend, Maurine
