The state of Georgia shocked the world when it took Troy Davis’ life last Wednesday. But in the wake of that outrage, the movement to end the death penalty has only grown in numbers and energy.
We have heard innumerable stories of consciousness raising and transformation. People did not go home from the various protests despondent. Like us, they have committed to not forgetting what happened and are emboldened, redoubling efforts to end the callous system that has demonstrated it has no business taking human life.
On Saturday, October 1, join us for a Day of Remembrance.

I dont believe that Troy Davis died in vain and he isnt the first to do in GA remember Lena Bake who was the first and only black woman to be executed. In the state of GA Troy may have been that John the baptist who was also shut in prison and beheaded for no reason. Troy may be use for such a time like this. To wake up a nation to the punishment of death by lethal injection. This is injustice to all those who have died innocently on death row. Our nation needs to wake up to the out cry of this way of punishment. Laws in all states needs to change.

Why is it that in the states where Christianity is most blatantly emblazoned on one's arms and most loudly professed — e.g., Georgia, Texas, South Carolina — behavior is most barbaric? The sheer hypocrisy of those who profess that human beings carry within them God' s sacred image and who, in their actions, totally ignore this ! ! When will these Southern states evolve morally and spiritually beyond the degradation of human life that they have perpetuated since their embrace of slavery? I am ashamed to live in the same nation with these people who even pervert justice to support the primitive barbarity of vengeful violence in the name of rule by law.. I am embarrassed at the image of the United States that these people present to the world. But I am proud to be of human kinship with Troy Davis who has set a standard for all of us to attain. May he now rest in peace and in the love of God's embrace.

I just want to send the Davis family my love and prayers. I know that their faith is so strong that God will see them through this rough time and that they wil continue to fight in Troy's name. I admire them so much because they are such a strong and loving family. Troy and I communicated through letters and his letters gave me strength when I felt weak. He had so much faith and love for people. He was an amazing young man. I am glad that God put him into my life. Troy taught me how to hold on to my faith no matter what I was going through and God would make it alright. Troy will always be in my heart.
Troy will be laid to rest. I wish today he was still here with us but the Lord used him for a greater purpose. R.I.P Troy.

Like another commentor said , i was not aware of this until a couple days before the execution . I read upon the case & was enraged with what was goin on . My entire , and i mean my entire heart goes out to the Davis family . They dragged this case out for far too long , and still came up with the wrong solution . May you Rest in Peace Troy and may justice be found for you and your family .
To the Davis Family: My heart is with you and I will do my part to abolish this barbaric ritual we call "justice". I live in a very conservative state…Oklahoma…and the only death penalty case that drew huge attention was that of Timothy McVeigh. While I could not shed tears for him; Troy Davis has inspired me to research further. I fully believe in Troy's innocence. It should be no man (woman's) decision to take another human life. I cannot be there Savannah in person on 10-1; but will be in spirit and will send a check for the family's fund. Anyone else reading; please do the same. We are all Troy Davis.

I will do all I can and all with in my power to work toward repealing this barbarism which is only rehearsed premeditated murder. He did not die in vain……..He lives and is the fuel of our struggle!!!!!!!1
I was considered a valued employee at the prison where Troy Davis was lynched. I resigned the day of his murder to participate alongside the zealous protesters in efforts to elevate my voice and extend my firm resolve to not have the blood of troy davis on my hands or in my heart. NOT IN MY NAME, NOT ON MY WATCH!!!!!………….Troy you've only gone to sleep so others can WAKE UP!

Troy understood, as in his last statement, when he blessed prison employees souls, that he understood all were just doing their assigned duties; placed no individual fault; but implied one of a system in whole.

to the White House last wednesday afternoon. I prayed for them to spare his life and reopen the trial. And the fight will go on…Justice for Troy!
And I urge, everyone to send a letter to President Obama and Eric Holder. Let's not let another person's life be taken away from them…Capital punishment/execution laws need to be outlawed in all 50 states!

I followed Mr. Davis' case for quite some time. I felt certain that in the end, justice would prevail, and he would be given a new trial. I was in shock when this did not happen. His execution was a travesty. Wrong, unjustified, savage and a blatant affirmation that in the USA, what passes for justice, what is ram-rodded through is not justice at all. How can we stand by and allow our system to go so far astray from anything remotely about justice??? Justice based merely upon what DA's, judges and mis-guided juror's decide that it is, shouldn't be tolerated. Justice based upon little more than a "feeling" those in power hold, over life and death, has no place in our society. None!
We are all wise to keep in mind that this could just as well have been any one of us here or someone we love/value highly. Mr. Davis' execution is an affront to human rights globally, a sham of justice in America and an utter embarrassment to any human being with an ounce of compassion about them.
My heart breaks for Mr. Davis' family and close friends and particularly for him. Not just for his wrongful death, but for the many years of suffering and pain they all endured in the course of this "joke of justice". There can never be any adequate compensation to them for this unnecessary crime of wrongful execution. Borne of a law enforcement system and a justice system with cart blanch to run roughshod over whomever they choose, regardless of anyone's PROVEN guilt. It's all nightmarish and it's all very real. We should all find ourselves not only outraged but sickened by this tragic saga and it's ultimate outcome. I can only hope that Mr. Davis' family will, in time, find some perspective and healing and a place of peace within their hearts.
We must carry the torch for justice and human rights bravely into the future, just as Troy Davis carried his sense of dignity unto his final breath. That was one thing they could not take from him! Even by killing him.
We must maintain hope for better laws and a better tomorrow for justice the world over. We must fight for right and we must speak out at every opportunity against the miscarriage of justice, the mistreatment of those arrested, those falsely accused/convicted, where ever and when ever it occurs. We must stand in staunch solidarity for those souls who cry silently in the night as their burdens become almost more than they can bear, while their spirits struggle to remain strong. For them, we must remain committed to positive change, until such time that injustice flourishes no more in the four corners of our world. We must stop the wholesale warehousing of human beings in prisons. We must work diligently to promote rehabilitation as the primary objective of those incarcerated.
In closing I believe the family of Officer MacPhail, surely cannot find any real peace in the fact that the guilt of the person executed for the murder of their loved one, was never proven and now, never can be. Rather, a dense, dark cloud of doubt will forever remain. That too, is a travesty. So many lives so adversely affected by such a miscarriage of justice.

I believe that very soon the truth will be revealed and it will prove that they killed the wrong person when they killed Troy Davis on last Wednesday. What will the state of Georgia say? What will the families of the deceasd say? I'll tell you this much; it will be a sad day in Georgia when the truth hits the fan. As a Georgia resident, I am embarassed by the actions to take the life of a man who was never given a chance to prove his innocense. especially when they knew there was reasonable doubt since all but two witnesses recanted their stories. I can only pray that God has mercy on us all when the revelation is made.

We must carry the torch for justice and human rights bravely into the future, just as Troy Davis carried his sense of dignity unto his final breath. That was one thing they could not take from him! Even by killing him.
We must maintain hope for better laws and a better tomorrow for justice the world over. We must fight for right and we must speak out at every opportunity against the miscarriage of justice, the mistreatment of those arrested, those falsely accused/convicted, where ever and when ever it occurs. We must stand in staunch solidarity for those souls who cry silently in the night as their burdens become almost more than they can bear, while their spirits struggle to remain strong. For them, we must remain committed to positive change, until such time that injustice flourishes no more in the four corners of our world. We must stop the wholesale warehousing of human beings in prisons. We must work diligently to promote rehabilitation as the primary objective of those incarcerated.
In closing I believe the family of Officer MacPhail, surely cannot find any real peace in the fact that the guilt of the person executed for the murder of their loved one, was never proven and now, never can be. Rather, a dense, dark cloud of doubt will forever remain. That too, is a travesty. So many lives so adversely affected by such a miscarriage of justice.
I'm crying silently over here in Europe for the life of Troy Davis. How can such a proud nation like the US still allow to kill people in the name of justice? It's barbaric.

I believe that very soon the truth will be revealed and it will prove that they killed the wrong person when they killed Troy Davis on last Wednesday. What will the state of Georgia say? As a Georgia resident, I am embarassed by the actions to take the life of a man who was never given a chance to prove his innocense. especially when they knew there was reasonable doubt since all but two witnesses recanted their stories. I'm outraged that the state of Georgia insisted on executing Troy Davis even though there was new evidence that could have proved his innocence. They refused to listen, they didn't want to hear it. That is just one aspect of what's wrong with having a death penalty. It's so arbitrary, and is carried out on the whim of who ever has the power to do so. In this case it was the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles. Over the last few years, I've become very aware of Georgia's system, where this board has sole authority to grant a condemned person clemency. I had heard that some of the persons who sit on this Board were formerly police officers, and the same officers that had coerced testimony from young witnesses that night in 1989. They had an interest in not having a re-trial, and having that fact come out in a trial.
I'm also outraged that the Governor, the President, and the District Attorney could not or would not to anything about it. A person was being systematically murdered by the state of Georgia, and we all had to watch helplessly.
I'm ashamed that our country is still using such a barbaric system. All of the European and South American countries have abolished the death penalty, but there is so much blood lust in this country, that many people still support it, even though it's been shown that innocent people have been executed, then found to be innocent when it's too late.
My heart goes out to Troy's family. They had been dealing with this for so long, only to have it end this way. Troy not only lost his life last week, but his entire youth was taken away from him, he spent it on death row, for a crime that he probably did not commit.

If you do not believe that reasonable doubt is a credible reason for exercising restraint in killing someone, than let he who is without sin – any sin – cast the first stone.
@ Scott – you hit the nail on the head. Though they march, cry, whine and pray for this murderous scum; a piece of evil garbage who murdered two young men, one a police officer, they fail to be consistent with their outrage since they do not have the ability to do so.
They carry with them a huge amount of guilt … and they feel it will somehow make themselves feel justified for walking this earth if they worship at the foot of this murderous scum because he was black.
You DID NOT see them crying, marching, protesting or screaming for the govorners head for the execution of Lawrence Russell Brewer. Brewer was executed for the grisly 1998 murder of Mr. James Byrd in Jasper, Texas.
Lawrence Russell Brewer, like Troy Davis, was nothing more and nothing less than a vicious murderer. And, I agree that they both deserved to be executed.
Where was the outrage from these morons for Brewer? They cannot reasonably answer that except to say Brewer was guilty and Davis was not. But this is not the reason for their illogical reaction. It had to do with race and only race. They go as far as to say that Davis was executed because he was a black man and the two innocent men he executed were white. Sad, sad, sad excuse.

well catherine lets talk about the victim who has no huge support system in place.And who did the crime?Red Coles?Sure he was there but he was'nt the triggerman.And Davis statement to the family,"I was'nt "personally" responsible for the death speaks volumes.You people especially in other countries have no damn business having any say in our judical system.Your flawed systems of justice based on compassion are sickining.I wonder how you would feel if a close member of your family was brutally murderered.

There is far more evidence now that Sylvester Coles was, in fact, the trigger-man than there is that Troy was. Coles admitted as much to several people who later signed affidavits. Before anyone jumps to the conclusion that Troy was guilty of the crimes for which he was convicted, s/he should read all of Amnesty International's documentation of the case. Amnesty won a Nobel prize for that documentation.
I exchanged letters with Troy for over two years, and during that time, Troy always urged me to pray for the MacPhails. Troy had empathy for their loss, but he did not shoot Officer MacPhail.

I am disgusted by the hatred inherent in the above posts. Such anger frightens me and I wonder why? nobody on this earth is perfect, without sin or fault, or correct at all times. That is why the death penalty needs to be abolished. It is irrevocable.

It was my duty as a conscious citizen to do the right thing as those "direct circumstances" would not have allowed my conscience to remain settled…..May all those like yourself be blessed in your efforts to abolish this criminal act…..
