Anderson Cooper Examines Troy Davis Case

Did you catch Anderson Cooper 360 last night?  The show examined the Troy Davis case, including interviews with jurors and witnesses who have since recanted their testimony.  One juror’s quote: “If I knew then what I know now, Troy Davis would not be on death row.”

Watch below.  Then join us to stop the execution scheduled for September 21!

  1. stay the execution of this man. He should get a new trial. And the death penalty should be abolished. But first, stay this exection.

  2. I'm just curious how many of the officers that were around back then are still officers….There as been a lot of them arrested over the years for doing illegal stuff themselves. I would suggest someone check on that. Also, This is the USA. How many of your "Victories" are in the USA? We have the worst justice system ever!

  5. TROY DAVIS IS PRESIDENT OBAMA'S GODSEND. The presidently rightfully should grant him a pardon. Send the racist into complete tailspins and hateful fits. Thereby, bringing out the worst in them for all of the world and America to witness. The extremist and die-hard will not be able to exercise control and behave so badly that Americans as a whole–all races–will stand up with our president now and and at the 2012 polls. I'm Obama's best advisor today. This is beyond ripe opportunity–lowest hanging fruit. The GOP can't obstruct here. We need our president to stand up taller, be more presidential and win a higher majority of the hearts and votes than ever. We don't need the negotiator–trying to change Washington in this matter. GODSEND blessed opportunities of this magnitude do not come along many times in life. Let the obstructionist ignite and fall on thier swords of hates and racism.

  7. I couldn't agree more that President Obama should do something to stop this gross miscaraige of justice. After the way he mishandled the Libya crisis, many socially & politically conscious Black people have a negative opinion of him. Taking a bold stand for justice where Blacks are concerned – for a change- could be a god PR move. If he's aware of Troy's situation, yet choses to do nothing…….

  8. We all know that when this man was convicted, GA and all other states in this country were still experiencing vast racism at the hands of police officers and prosecutors. Unfortunately, Troy Davis is not the only man behind bars after all these years due to harassment of witnesses by racist police officers. We still see many cases of racism and police brutality today. Of course the COPS in this case are going to stick to their story that they conducted all interviews without cohersion. BULL!!! God doesn't like ugly and although these people continue to sit behind the badge, many earning those badges during the "good ole' boy" days, some day we must all pay for our sins. Presenting information based on dishonesty should not be tolerated and we can never put all of our trust in the police or prosecutors. With that said, there are many, many professionals in both these fields who do their jobs with the utmost integrity. For them, this does not apply unless they turn a blind eye when they see others commit to wrongdoing. For Troy Davis, I pray that God's Will be done. For the family of the police officer, I pray that someday you find closure and peace based on the conviction of the right person. May your loved one rest in peace.

  11. I corresponded with Troy for many years and have always believed him to be an innocent man. His family have fought for his right to a retrial with great dignity and courage. It is a disgrace to the American Government and in this day and age that this man and others have to spend over 20 years trying to have his voice heard. The American Justice system sucks, his Government picked lawyers failed several times to lodge his appeals on time and then he had to wait years to appeal again. Shame on all of those who know the truth and are afraid to loose face by telling the truth, how they can sleep at night defies belief SHAME ON YOU ALL!!

  12. I just don't understand..how can they have all of this information in front of them, witness recanting and talking about how it was someone else. Isn't that enough to make them want to look into? It's been 20 years, why punish a man who's already suffered enough..why punish a man that very well could be innocent? If this country is all about justice, then they need to do just that! It's not fair to anyone, his family or even the officer's family..What happens when someone decides to take the time and look into it and see it wasn't him? It'll be too late and everyone on that board & etc will say "Oops..guess it was the wrong guys after all" An innocent man will be gone and the guilty will have gone free. If he's already been in prison for 20 years, why are they NOW wanting to end his life? The state needs to reopen this case and look into the facts, look into what everyone is saying..is his life not worth it? I bet if it was someone close to them, this would be another story..I pray for this man and this family..Too many times have innocent people been sent away for things they didn't do and no one found out until it was too late… This story is absolutely crushing to me and everytime I read it, I just wish there was more that I could do.

  13. You people make me sick. Troy Davis is guilty he was convicted of shooting a man hours before at a pool party in cloverdale there were whitness at that crime that pointed out Troy Davis. he was wearing the same clothes a few hours later when he murder Officer Macphail. Shell casing found at both crimes sceens were identically marked, per forenzics and balistics. where any of you even living in Savannah in 1989? I was and we knew officer Macphail and his family. He was an ex-military man who joined the SPD he did his job and was the victim here. Troy Davis is punk who murdered officer Macphail. The court documents show it but the defense has on agenda and that is to fight the death penalty not who the person is. They could care less it is just to serve their cause. Try asking his Mother why she lied to police and said Troy left for Atlanta at 9 p.m. the night before and try asking his sister who fled with him to Atlanta what really happened and what troy talked about all the way up to Atlanta. An innocent man does not run… The courts got it right and you people make me sick as you don't know this case and never will. I lived the case, I live in Savannah when this took place, I knew the Macphails and other officers on SPD. Also for you people screaming Racism. Do you know there are 26 people on Death row. 25 Men and 1 Woman. All of them except Troy Davis is white. I don't see any of you professing any of their innocents.. what a joke you all are.

  17. I believe this man to be innocent, but maybe I am wrong. Jesus was innocent but they still crucified him. The least he deserves is a fair trial. What is it to you if he is alive a few more years, maybe because you are afraid that you are wrong and he is innocent and a new trial will prove it, if he has another trial and found guilty then execute him. Geez people not happy unless you see blood spilled or excute someone. What happened to forgiving those who trespass against you. I guess God has been left out of this one. Dont you think the officer that was killed would want a fair trial for this man, yes he would if he is innocent and the quilty party goes free, Officer Macphail would not want that. Just my two cents. I hope Obama does something in this at least then at least he has done one thing right.

  18. i think any one weather blk or white should be given a fair trial and the death penalty should not be an option, i am not saying he didnt do this i am say he deserve a fair trial nad his mother should not have to suffer, and the officers mother know what it fells like so why put another mother through this. he is in prison just let he=im die there of natural causes un less they do a new trial and show he innocent then let him free, MY FATHER IN HEAVEN HELP THE NATION AND HAVE MERCY AND EXTENT YOUR GRACE TO THE OFFICERS FAMILY AND TROY DAVIS FAMILY . GOD SHOW YOUR GLORY IN THE PLACE…

  21. The possible execution of Troy Davis is a disgrace to America…we Europeans are shocked.

We don't understand your court system. How is it possible to kill a man under these circumstances and with all these unsettled matters? and in the name of the law?
    I really don't understand

  23. Just an FYI: The president has no authority to issue a pardon on this case or any other that is not in the federal jurisdiction. He is a President, not a King.

  25. The power to pardon applies only to offenses against the laws of the jurisdiction of which the pardoning official is the chief executive. Thus the president may only pardon for violations of federal law, and governors may only pardon for violations of the laws of their states.

  27. @ Chuck, fuck you. You are a racist and so is this officer's family. We dont care that you knew some officers or should i say pigs. police are corrupted and there is too much evidence vindicating him from the crime. how do you know he shot him? were you there? no you were not. You are a racist. There may be many whites on death row but he is the one that was to be executed now and it looks like he is innocent you dumbass. You are a punk AND HAVE BEEN ONE SINCE YOU CAME FROM YOUR slutty momma.

  29. I PERSONALLY THINK THAT OUR JUDICAL SYSTEM FAILED TROY DAVIS.FIRST OF ALL , THERE WASN'T ANY SOLID EVIDENCE TO GIVE ANYONE THE RIGHT TO TAKE THIS MAN'S LIFE FOR NOTHING.I BELIEVE THE SYSTEM WANTED TO GIVE THE OFFICER'S FAMILY CLOSURE. I THINK THAT THE STATE DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE TO PAY THIS BLACK MAN MONEY FOR FALSELY ACCUSING HIM FOR THE YEARS HE SERVED.SOCIETY IS STILL UNFAIR..ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BE CREATED EQUAL.NOONE HAS THE RIGHT TO DECIDE IF WE DIE OR NOT BUT GOD.I HOPE THAT THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT SO THAT PEOPLE WILL SEE THAT STILL TODAY ..PREJUDICE IS STILL AROUND AND THIS WORLD NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE ALL THE SAME..WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT ! I PRAY FOR THE EVIL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD AND HOPE THAT GOD WILL SOMEHOW CHANGE THEIR HEARTS.UNTIL THEN, THIS GENERATION DOESN'T SEE COLOR SO IF YOU HAVE BLACK AND WHITE ISSUES…YOU NEED TO OVER COME IT.WE ARE THE SAME AND WE ALL OUR GOD'S CHILDREN.AS FOR THE STATE OF GEORGIA..TROY DAVIS'S BLOOD AND ON YOUR HANDS.

  31. I am a Nigerian, not an American, but because am human and can say some thing about this,I will. We Nigerians have always admired America for its justice system, and the belief that equal rights are given to people, regardless of tribe, color, religion or belief. We were so shocked, that inspite of all the doubts and uncleared issues surrounding Troy Davis case, the judges in the courts and members of the board of pardons and parole, closed their eyes, their minds and hearts and it was as if they all had a meeting that Troy Davis, must be executed this time around. Am sorry to say its a shame on America and we Nigerians and Africans are disappointed with America. Chuck I don't know you,but I can tell you this, if you say Troy Davis was guilty of that crime, you are only saying so because, you heard from some where, you were not at the scene of the crime. Let us all remember, that Troy Davis was tried, convicted and sentenced to death, not based on pictures or videos showing him killing officer Mark Macphail, it was not based on DNA tests prooving he commited the crime, it was not based on any weapon found that had his finger prints on it, it was clearly based on witnesses, who mostly were not even at the scene of the crime the day it happened, but based on them saying, they heard from Troy Davis or some where else. People, 7 out of 9 witnesses, that the courts and jury relied on,to prosecute and sentence Troy Davis to death, recanted their testimonies and yet, America was in a rush to execute some1, who may possibly be innocent, considering the circumstance in his case. Chuck we all are humans, and we are bound to make mistakes,am not supporting Troy Davis, but talking based on the facts I have heard about his case, if Troy Davis ran,it could be out of fear and am sure, you could do the same,if you found your self in his shoes. Don't forget he turned himself in, have you taught of why he did that, he could have choosen to be on the run and may not be caught, but he turned himself in. I feel sorry for Macphail family, because if they did not want to forgive who killed Mark Macphail, then atleast they deserve justice. I wish they had been more patient with the recent developments, so that they are sure what they get Is justice, and not vengeance or murder on their hands. People say, the case had dragged to long, Troy Davis should have been executed long time ago, what if he was innocent, do people think Troy Davis will say the case drag to long, if he finally was found innocent and released? Its painfull, he has been executed, but I strongly believe he was innocent, he may have been at the scene of the crime, but I believe he was innocent. Even on the gurney, a man who was about to loose the most important thing he had, still confidently declared his innocence and yet, people say he's guilty. If Troy Davis had said he was guilty, he will still be executed, and as far as I am concerned, he saw no need to lie about anything. All most of us asked and pleaded for was a retrial, so that they will be sure Troy Davis was the culprit, America closed its ears to,great american politicians, great men and leaders around the world, the european union, governments of some countries, musicians etc, and executed a man,who had not been prooven guilty, with all that concerned his case. I cried when he was executed and anytime I remember Troy Davis, my heart bleeds. Am sure if those 7 witnesses had recanted, after Troy Davis was executed, the judges, members of the board of pardons and parole and all those, who supported Troy Davis execution, would have said "why did they not recant before he was executed" they did recant, even though they were not in court, when they recanted, they did recant before he was executed. Some1 had to be a scapegoat and pay the price with life, its unfortunate that Troy Davis was murdered and not executed, because America was not able to proove that he was truly guilty. Just as Troy Davis said, while on the gurney "may God Have Mercy on the souls of all those that were involved in the process of putting him to death and may God bless them all". Chuck I wonder what you will do or want, from those who pleaded for clemency or retrial for Troy Davis, if you were the one being accused of murder or if it was your brother or relation that was accused of such. Its good for us humans, to always let our conscience prick us,from time to time. May Troy Anthony Davis Soul and Officer Mark Macphail's soul, rest in peace, Amen.

  32. I dare any one,any human being alive today, to hold the bible or quran, and swear by it that, he or she is 100% sure that Troy Davis was the person, who held a gun and shot officer Mark Macphail.

  35. Troy Davis was innocent, I still can't believe what they did to him. He was innocent without a doubt, and he even knew who the killer was (Sylvester Coles) but he was so noble that didn't acuse him. 7 witness recanted and pointed Sylvester Coles as the killer of officer Mcphail, 10 other new witness came forward to point Sylvester Coles as the killer. If you see a picture of Sylvester Coles, he has writen guilty all over his face, at least SC can't fool God. Why Mcphail's family were so blinded & wanted to kill Troy Davis at all cost I don't understand with so much evidence pointing ou Sylvester Coles but I'm sure that Troy's death didn't bring peace to them as they sought in this execution, I hope one day they realize you don't build your peace upon another person's death & much less an innocent man. I can't imagine the pain of Troy's family, I send them prayers. And why Sylvester Coles is still free & nobody does anything to really do justice I don't understand either.
