Very Big Victory for Human Rights in Orissa

Amnesty International applauds the Government of India’s decision to reject a bauxite mine in the Dongria Kondh region of the state of Orissa.

We also welcome the government’s decision to suspend the clearance process for the sixfold expansion of the Lanjigarh refinery at the foothills of Niyamgiri, operated by Vedanta subsidiary Vedanta Aluminium, after a government’s expert committee found it to be illegal.

It’s not often that we get such a clear cut victory, but this is one of those occasions.

“After years of struggle and visits by committees our voice has finally reached Delhi,” a Dongria Kondh leader today told Amnesty International.

  1. I was involved with your organization a number of years ago when i served an personal assistant to the director of The Singapore Christian Conference Center. It was in a very anonymous capacity in order to protect many people. Anyway, the case involved a number of minority Coptic Christians in Egypt who were being tortured & persecuted for their faith. The brave Englishwoman who put her entire career on the line to help these poor folks in Egypt had to go back to her home country for good. I was nearly beaten to death by Muslim police officers in Singapore, & a long court case continued with pictures of the beatings…..
The Singapore Christian Conference center had operated for 30 years & my parents, who have been devoted missionaries for over 50 years were the directors. They helped thousands of people worldwide, especially those needing asylum from persecution as Christians in third world countries & so on. SCCC was finally closed down but the Singapore government has brought charge upon charge against them, all false allegations because my parents know many things about Singapore that are not as "Squeeky clean" as Singapore's media image. Far from.. it, in fact. The local Christian community has gone to great lengths to clear my parents names in court, at great risk to themselves. They can't leave Singapore & recently they arrested my daughter who is bi-polar & suicidal. This is a grave injustice & is done in a subtle & sneeky way, so people won't know what they are doing. I believe that I got out so I could tell all. Please remember my parents who did so much for the gospel's sake, yet never asked for any credit. Why should the devil get credit in this matter when we all know he was already defeated at the Cross!? Thank You & God Bless you. Your sister in Christ, Lisa Baker
