One year later, where's Pattani Razeek?

On Feb. 11, 2010, Pattani Razeek, a Sri Lankan human rights defender, was apparently abducted in the town of Polonnaruwa in northcentral Sri Lanka. The police have identified but failed to question a man they consider the prime suspect in Razeek’s enforced disappearance.  The man is a former colleague of Razeek’s and a close associate of the Minister for Industry and Commerce.  Pattani Razeek’s whereabouts remain unknown to this day.

Over the past several decades, Sri Lanka has experienced tens of thousands of enforced disappearances, the vast majority of which remain unresolved.  They are one more example of the lack of accountability in Sri Lanka for human rights violations.

Please write to the Sri Lankan government and ask them to effectively investigate the disappearance of Pattani Razeek and hold accountable those responsible for this crime.

  5. Hi Jim,

Totally support your call that the GoSL speed up their tardy, lazy investigations into these disappearances.

It's a damn shame AI refused to attend the 'Lessons Learnt' Commission in Colombo. Think how much more effective your campaign would've been, if you'd bothered to attend. AI could've raised Razeek's abduction/disappearance and also that of Prageeth Eknaligoda. I hope that whoever at AI made the decision not to attend is sacked for incompetence.

@ 'Boycott: if you're so concerned about disappearances, what about the 150+ people who were disappeared by the LTTE? Why not ask your local LTTE tax collector if he has any information about them?

  6. UN Committee calls on prompt investigations and prosecutions in Sri Lanka
The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) urges Sri Lanka to “promptly investigate, prosecute and punish all acts of violence including sexual violence” which have arisen during the last stages of the conflict and in the post conflict phase. The Committee further calls on Sri Lanka to “consider having an independent international accountability mechanism, in accordance with recent proposal of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, mandated to investigate the cases of serious violations of human rights, including women’s rights, which have arisen in the last stages of the fighting.”

Before, ECCHR has submitted a report to the CEDAW Committee during its 48th session on the foreseeability of sexual violence in conflict in the case of Sri Lanka. The paper demands new legal ways in order to hold perpetrators accountable and calls for the UN to consider the use of sexual violence in conflicts as part of its approach for respecting human and women's rights. The existence and legal denial of sexual violence as a crime was an expression of gender-based discrimination and patriarchal systems that needed to be overcome

The Committee called on investigations, prosecution and punishment of all acts of violence during the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. So far, although many international NGOs presented credible evidence of the commission of war crimes by both parties to the conflict, no serious investigations have been opened.

ECCHR’s Gender and Human Rights program manager Anna von Gall said: “Sri Lanka must comply with its obligations to prevent women and girls from being subjected to sexual violence by military personnel and has to prosecute those crimes that have been committed pursuant to the Convention's framework.”

  7. I’m shocked that Racist Sri Lanka arrested 500 Tamil fisherman !!!

Anti – Tamil is a root of All Evil in Sri Lanka!!

Sinhalese say that Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese only.

For many generations the Sinhalese learned to hate the Tamils and that the Tamils are invaders to the island.

The brutal July , 1983 where 3000 Tamils killed, 50 000 injured and 200 000 Tamil household destroyed, is the result of the racism in Sri Lanka .

What kind of people would burn small babies alive just because these babies are Tamils ?

Recent war in Sri Lanka is another example of Sinhalese Barbarism.

I’m sure, the Sri Lanka Sinhalese soldiers saw the blood bath where most of the victims were innocent women and children, as they follow the Tamil Exodus from north of Sri Lanka to the seashore for 3 yrs.

But they chose to ignore the Tamil Genocide and continue to kill, butcher and maim !!

No sane person would continue to do that for many days, months and years
    .
Only the brainwashed, filled with racist hate towards Tamils and drunk on false Sinhalese Patriotic propaganda would continue to slaughter the innocent !!!!

Today, the 18th of February, finds us three months away from the second anniversary of the “Mullivaikal Massacre”. At this juncture it is important to ask the question: What constructive action can be taken by the Tamil Diaspora to build a better future for the Tamil nation? In Tamil culture, at a funeral, all the people of the village are expected to attend. It’s tradition. But if the whole village was a funeral house, who will go and to whose house? Also, who will heal the existing souls? http://groundviews.org/2011/02/18/the-tamil-diasp

Agents of Sri Lanka, some of them who work as pseudo terror experts and journalists in other countries are demonising the Tamils who are struggling for their survival even in the seas. These fake experts continue to deceive the international community by identifying every Tamil child, mother and father as terrorists.

Sri Lankan Tragedy is also about an unfair world that is letting the murderers and rapists to walk on red carpets but ignoring the plight of the innocents that are languishing in torture camps and prisons.

Story of Sri Lanka in the last sixty five years is simply the repetitions of hundreds and thousands of similar horrific events at different scales. 99% of the perpetrators were either Sri Lankan military or extremist Sinhala mobs and 99% of the victims were innocent Tamils.

Ban Ki Moon’s emissary Vijay Nambiar who was dispatched to Sri Lanka, apparently to stop the predictable blood bath in the final days of the conflict met with his brother Satish Nambiar, the Sri Lankan Government’s Military Consultant and, of course, the Rajapakses, Narayanans and Menons directing the Tamil Genocide. Having ‘failed’ in his mission Vijay Nambiar returned to his boss in New York and personally apprised him of the ‘success’ of his mission. http://www.tamilcanadian.com/article/6051

  31. “Either you vote us or suffer” is the new motto of Rajapaksa's ruling UPFA party’s local Government election campaign. President Mahinda Rajapakse’s lieutenant Wimal Weerawansa told the voters that they will be left with a local Government that can enjoy riding a heavy vehicle round the village if the opposition is given power in their local government. Another said that the Government will appoint their own commissioners to go against the local Government body elected by the people. This is perhaps the most direct threat that the Government would go against the will of the voters.

Fear mongering and threatening the voters has been the trademark of Mahinda Rajapakse Government. During the war, every military move to capture a major town in the North was preceded by a provincial council election in the South. The threat was that “if you vote the opposition, you will see grave consequences on the operation in the North.” In response, the opposition MP Ravi Karunanayake equated this style of winning the election by holding the military operation for ransom as “going to Pamankada while saying we are going to Alimankada”. We all know how the state media was abused to skew this statement to fool the public. This heinous political terror tactic spread even to the presidential election. On the election day, bombs were exploded in several parts of the North to remind the traumatized people that danger awaits if they dare to vote. Southern voters were terrified by showing the possibility that foreign imperialists will occupy this land if the opposition comes to power. The mega die hard patriotic mouthpiece Wimal Weerawansa was used to make the voters shiver in this fear

  33. The mother of LTTE leader Velupillai Pirapaharan has died

The last days of this 79yrs dying Hindu grandmother, Parvathi Pillai was horrific !!

Sinhala Sri Lanka Government allowed 1000 of Sinhala Tourists to barge into hospital room and photograph her !!!!!

I could not believe it myself!!

Why Sri Lanka Sinhala Government humiliated the dying, paralyzed old Tamil by allowing the horde of unruly tourists with small children into the hospital and photograph this helpless woman ?

Do they have any decency or a drop of humanity in them ?

They should first… ask permission from this dying grandmother be photographed?

BTW Maybe she dont want to be photographed with tubes coming out from her nose ? Maybe she was mortified and highly disturbed.

This old and sick woman should be left in peace!!

    This is not a Zoo!!

This dying Hindu was not an animal on display in the Zoo !!

Sri Lanka Pres. Rajapaksa should display his dying mother or grandmother like this !!

It was uncivilized and cruel display that tormented the dying, helpless old woman !!

  35. @ Pulenthiran: your Eelamist lies are easily countered by thetruth about Prabhakaran's mother.

People of all communities visited her, bringing her gifts of food and drink to ensure her comfort. She was cared for in her last years of life by the Sri Lankan taxpayer. Her remaining children, living in Canada and Norway refused to visit, despite the GoSL giving guarantees for their safety.

“Most of those who troop in to see her are Sinhalese. Some of them give her gifts of fruits and other eatables. Some even touch her feet in reverence. The hospital distributes these gifts among the poor patients”

  38. @ Boycott:

Back to the same old tired lies and cliches about genocide ? Odd how in that litany of whines you forgot to mention your Glorious Leader's responsibility for the massive Tamil civilian death toll. Too embarrassing to admit?

I’m very sorry about a past that neither you nor I can change. The LTTE tried and failed to win a separate state. If you supported them, you should’ve asked them why they rejected all compromises. Where was the pro-LTTE diaspora pressure on the (undemocratic) LTTE to compromise? There wasn’t any because the overwhelming majority supported their war aims.

it's too late to cry 'unfair' when you lose the 'Final War' you supported so fervently. At least have some respect for the dead LTTE cadres who fought and died in vain. Sri Lanka doesn't need to demonise fake asylum seekers and escaping LTTE terrorists trying to get into the West, They're doing a great job by themselves 🙂

  41. AN AUSTRALIAN citizen and senior Sri Lankan diplomat has been accused of complicity in the murders of three surrendering Tamil Tigers in an application to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.

The man, Palitha Kohona, was the international face of the Sri Lankan government's war with separatist militants, the Tamil Tigers, and played an important role in the surrender of Tamil Tiger soldiers following their defeat in May 2009.

But reports of mass killings and the extrajudicial killing of surrendering Tigers have since surfaced. Dr Kohona and the Sri Lankan government strongly deny the claims, and so far the international community has been reluctant to investigate them.

Advertisement: Story continues below However, two international Tamil organisations have made a series of war crimes allegations to the International Criminal Court involving Dr Kohona and his role in the negotiated surrender of three Tamil Tigers who are believed to have been killed.

While Sri Lanka does not recognise the jurisdiction of the court, Dr Kohona's citizenship of Australia – a country which is a party to the court – means unlike other senior members of the Sri Lankan government, he can potentially be prosecuted.

That does not mean that a full investigation is likely, however, as only a very few of the requests for prosecutions each year are pursued by the court.

Dr Kohona became an Australian citizen in the 1980s while working in Canberra with the Foreign Affairs Department. He is now the Sri Lankan government's representative at the United Nations.

During the 2008-09 civil war which led to the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, Dr Kohona was secretary of the Sri Lankan foreign affairs ministry and played a role in negotiating the surrender of Tamil Tigers.

Among those who surrendered were three senior Tiger members, Mahindran Balasingham, Seeveratnam Pulidevan and a man known only as Ramesh.

On May 18, the day after the Tigers admitted defeat, the three men, along with at least a dozen others, negotiated a surrender with the Sri Lankan army. They waved a white flag when surrendering to show their intent.

Watched by hundreds of other Tamils, the group walked into an army-controlled area. Several minutes later shots and explosions were heard, witnesses said.

Balasingham and Pulidevan have not been seen since and Ramesh was seen at a hospital months later but subsequently disappeared. The Sri Lankan government has confirmed the death of two of the men.

The request, filed by the Swiss Council of Eelam Tamils and the US group Tamils Against Genocide, alleges Dr Kohona had been involved in the trio's surrender in the days before their death.

''On about May 17, 2009, in the evening or night, Palitha Kohona communicated … that the surrendering [Tamil Tigers] members would be safe if they surrendered with a white flag raised,'' the request claims.

A day later the three men surrendered. ''Some time after 8.15am [the trio] walked towards SLA lines with a white flag, along with 12-40 combatants and non-combatants … the SLA attacked by gunfire.''

  42. Sri Lanka Army LA terrorizes opposition candidates Sri Lanka

The opposition party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has complained that Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers are threatening an intimidating TNA candidates contesting in the forthcoming local elections in the Vanni region. Jaffna district TNA parliamentarian Mr.S. Sritharan has accused the SLA soldiers of unleashing terror in the Vanni region creating fear psychosis among the TNA candidates. TNA parliamentarians Selvam Adaikalanathan and Sivasakthi Aanandan have also alleged that they are being intimidated by SLA soldiers and intelligence unit men against holding election meetings in Vavuniyaa.

TNA candidates electioneering in Thirunagar in Killinochchi division were threatened by SLA soldiers Tuesday, according to parliamentarian Sritharan.

SLA soldiers have threatened at gunpoint a disabled candidate while electioneering and destroyed pamphlets the candidate was in possession at that time.

The army had forced that TNA candidate to remove election posters in the area.

  43. This is very worrying:

Around 400 Eezham fishermen and their families from Maathakal in Jaffna, led by parish priest S.M.P Anandakumar, silently agitated in front of the Indian consulate at Kantharmadam in Jaffna, Monday morning, demanding security for them and assurance against poaching by Indian fishermen. Their mouths tied in black cloth they carried placards, damaged fishing nets and empty pots. There was a heavy presence of occupying SL military to provide security to the Indian mission. According to the fishermen, the Indian Consul General, Mr. Mahalingam dodged assurances when fishermen representatives met him some days ago. Since he secured the release of the poaching Indian trawlers and fishermen, he is also now responsible for stopping poaching and providing security in the seas to the affected Eezham fishermen, the agitators said.

  44. Dear Rebecca (nice Eelamish name),
I'm also very worried by the decline in Eelamish/Eezham comedy writing standards. Have you heard the latest from the LTTE high command, planning a return trip to Sri Lanka?

Currently LTTE activists and fund raisers are going around collecting money in different Western countries. The story goes like this:

“LTTE leader Prabhakaran and Intelligence chief Pottu Amman are safe in a secret location with 2000 experienced tiger cadres. They broke through the military and naval cordon and reached safety a few days before the Mullivaakkal debacle. They are keeping a low profile for obvious reasons. But plans are afoot to launch a concerted attack on the North and East of Sri Lanka and capture strategic territory after annihilating or driving the armed forces away”.

“Meanwhile 10,000 cadres are being trained at other secret locations in different batches. The idea is to launch an all out assault under the overall command of Prabakharan and Pottu Amman. The combined force of 12,000 LTTE cadres will wrest back the territory of Tamil Eelam and reverse the prevailing military situation”

“As part of this military strategy we are also planning to conduct a series of coordinated landmine and bomb attacks in various parts of the seven Sinhala majority provinces. For this we are enlisting several Sinhala ex – service personnel through hefty bribes and payments. They will get into action at the right time in concert with our main attack”.

“For all these plans to bear fruit we need money. We can’t ask each and every person. Neither can we issue a public appeal. We can only depend on a few trusted and committed persons like you. So please give what you can”

Better get your cheque books ready! 🙂 🙂 🙂

The ministry has not stated what action would be taken regarding these fisher folk who have permanent houses in the area.

Also, fishermen from Negombo, who come during their off season, would not be able to engage in their livelihood if hotels are built on this strip of beach.

  58. UN: 5,000 Tamils are held off-limits in Sri Lanka

Are those 5 000 people in prison dead or alive ?

A senior U.N. official, Buhne says 5,000 suspected ex-combatants remain in Sri Lankan camps 21 months after a quarter-century civil war ended.

Neil Buhne said Friday those ex-combatants are suspected loyalists to separatist Tamil Tiger rebels defeated in May 2009.

He says they remain in camps beyond reach of U.N. and Red Cross officials, but another 5,000 suspected ex-combatants were released.

Eezham fishermen = Tamil fishermen from Northern Sri Lanka.

    If you are interested :

    Being robbed by 'messiahs'

Tamil Nadu politicians wept buckets for northern Sri Lankans during the Vanni war and staged massive protests in Chennai against Colombo demanding that the war be stopped and its victims be looked after. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi went so far as to launch a fast, giving the Centre a scare, albeit in vain. But, since the end of the war, those political worthies have done virtually nothing for the war affected; they have not even donated a single roofing sheet from their personal funds. They have only resorted to mere sloganeering and rhetoric while exploiting the plight of the war affected people of Sri Lanka to distract the people of Tamil Nadu from their burning problems which remain unsolved.

Worse, the people of the North struggling to rebuild their lives have suffered a heavy blow at the hands of Tamil Nadu leaders who shamelessly encourage poaching in Sri Lanka's territorial waters at the expense of the Jaffna fishermen.

Poaching has sparked public protests in Jaffna. Hundreds of northern fishermen staged a demonstration opposite the Indian Consulate in Jaffna yesterday demanding that India put an end to poaching without allowing them to be deprived of their livelihood and driven to starvation. Last week they, angered by the failure of the government and the Navy to take action against Indian poachers because of diplomatic pressure, took the law into their own hands, captured over one hundred poachers together with their fishing craft and equipment and handed them over to the police. They had acted in a similar manner in 1989, when the Jaffna fishers, assisted by the LTTE, surrounded their Indian counterparts engaged in poaching and brought them ashore. The late President Ranasinghe Premadasa, who was smoking the peace pipe with Prabhakaran at that time, managed to get his Tiger pets to release the fishermen in captivity.

It is a supreme irony that while Tamil Nadu politicians with pro-LTTE elements among them are protesting against action being taken against Indian poachers, the people of Jaffna are demonstrating in front of the Indian consulate against India's failure to put an end to illegal fishing by Indians!

Indian fishermen will not dare enter Sri Lanka's territorial waters at will without encouragement from the Tamil Nadu politicians who swing into action to secure their release whenever they get into trouble, by pressuring the Centre to coerce Colombo into letting go of poachers. So, it is not the Indian fishers who are to be blamed for poaching but the Tamil Nadu political leaders, especially Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha, who, out of some visceral hatred towards Sri Lanka, are using them as a cat's paw to bring Sri Lanka and India on a collision course. Jayalalitha has suddenly remembered Kachchativu, which she urges India to assert control over forthwith. She is obviously drawing a red herring across the track in the run-up to the TN assembly polls.

If the Tamil Nadu politicians who project themselves as messianic leaders are genuinely concerned about the plight of the northern Sri Lankans who are struggling to rebuild their lives, they must promptly restrain their fishermen from robbing the Jaffna fishermen of their resources and endangering their livelihood. Unless the Indians notorious for using illegal fishing methods are kept at bay, Sri Lankan fishermen will be left without any fish to harvest before long.

It is a crying shame that the Tamil Nadu politicians are promoting poaching which endangers the livelihoods of thousands of northern Sri Lankans, whose cause they claim to champion!

In other words, the Jaffna fishermen are being robbed by their 'messiahs' themselves!

  66. Dear Pulenthiran,
Another outrageous lie about the SL govt deliberately starving Tamil children! Poor people across SL, regardless of whether they're Tamil or Sinhalese are finding it difficult to feed their kids.

And what does the Donkey Diaspora and their European supporters do? Promote economic boycotts of Sri Lankan garments, including those made by Tamil workers in the North & East! http://thecarthaginiansolution.files.wordpress.co

I don't worship King Mahinda — he's done good and bad things and for the moment, the good outweighs the bad. The only people who worshipped someone in recent SL history is of course the LTTE supporters who foolishly put their trust, hopes and dreams in the hands of Fat Boy VP. Shame, no?

Occupying Sri Lanka military desecrates ashes of dead Hindu Lady, Parvathi Amma
The ashes of Parvathi Amma cremated Tuesday and waiting for ritual collection were desecrated by occupying SL military in Jaffna Tuesday night. Three dead dogs with gun shot injuries were put on the cremation spot and the ashes were scattered by running over the spot by Sri Lanka military vehicles. Local people witnessed the movement of military vehicles in the location Tuesday night. Former TNA parliamentarian, Mr. MK Sivajilingam, guardian to the interests of Parvathi Amma, came out with strong condemnation of the desecration. In Saiva tradition, the ashes are ritually collected the day following the cremation, to dissolve them in waters such as sea, river etc.

    Shock and horror !!!!!!!!!!

How can occupying Sri Lanka military desecrate ashes of dead Hindu Lady, Parvathi and put 3 dead dogs with gun shot injuries on her cremation spot and the ashes then her ashes were scattered by running over the spot by Sri Lanka military vehicles ?????

The Racist Sri Lanka Army is ruthless and inhuman Army and it does not respect Hindu religion !!!!!

  70. Dear Puli,
Mahinda saying 'zero civilian casualties' was stupid, illogical, baffling and an outrageous lie. Who knows why governments have to lie about irrefutable facts like that? Of course there were civilian casualties and I'm sorry for that.

But you won't admit that it was the LTTE itself who ensured a maximum number of Tamil civilian casualties by using them as human shields. Anyway the war's over. Now you can argue about who did what to whom without ever admitting that the war required two sides and one side (the LTTE) lost.

If Parvathi Amma's remains were desecrated (your report is unverified and uncorroborated) it is a disgusting act, unworthy of the Sri Lanka Army which is indeed ruthless but fair in its killing policy.

David Blacker put it it best with this: ..”the LTTE is racially motivated — the cleansing of the north was of all non-Tamil ethnic groups — while the SL armed forces are not — the latter will willingly kill anyone, regardless of race, if so ordered.”

What make things worse in Sri Lanka are not just the atrocities carried out by the fascist forces but the compromise made by some international elements, who have decided to support the criminals but turned a blind eye to the victims. 81. Indian politician condemn Sri Lanka Army's desecration of Hindu Ladys ashes

Vaiko, the general secretary of Indian Party MDMK, condemned Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Sri Lanka for having carried out a “barbaric act” allegedly by letting his troops to desecrate the ashes of the late Parvathi Amma, the mother of LTTE leader V. Pirapaharan. Vaiko urged the world leaders to condemn the act.

Vaiko, the MDMK leader urged the International Community to act before it is too late. The Rajapaksa regime is blocking the independent investigations and was not allowing access to foreign NGOs that could witness the plight of Tamils, who are continuously subjected to genocide, he said.

Tamil Eelam is the only solution to put an effective end to the genocide on Eezham Tamils, Mr. Vaiko said.

  82. Rajapaksa racist regime stole 200 tractors 500 tractors donated by India for the use of war affected farmers in the North, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) charged in Parliament yesterday.

The Subject Minister denying the allegations said that the tractors were being used for the preparation of lands for coconut cultivations in these areas.

TNA National List MP M.A.Sumanthiran said that 100 tractors had been given to the Coconut Development Board and another 100 to the State Cashew Corporation.

Mr. Sumanthiran said that another 100 tractors had been arranged to be sent to the south without giving to farmers.

The government has given only 38 tractors to agricultural organizations in Jaffna and another 38 to some such organizations in Mullaitivu, he said. However, he did not detail what happened to the remaining 124 tractors.

The TNA MP asked why the government had done so to a donation made by a friendly neighour for the benefit of ordinary farmers in the North where around 10,000 tractors were destroyed due to the Tamil war.
