International tribunal needed on Sri Lanka

While the fighting in Sri Lanka’s war zone reportedly intensified today, we saw a couple of firsts in terms of public statements on the crisis:  for the first time, the U.N. Security Council formally met and called on both of the warring parties to allow civilians to leave the conflict area.  President Obama also spoke out today on the conflict, for the first time since becoming President.  Both statements were very welcome; indeed, Amnesty International just today had called on both the Obama Administration and the Security Council to act to save the civilians trapped in the war zone.

The Sri Lankan government is pursuing its military offensive against the opposition Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who have been seeking an independent state for the Tamil minority in the north and east of the island.  The Sri Lankan military has now confined the LTTE to a small pocket of land on the northeast coast, about one square mile in all.  Trapped with the LTTE are an estimated 50,000 civilians who are being used by the LTTE as human shields and prevented from leaving the area.  Since January, AI estimates that more than 7,000 civilians have been killed and13,000 injured due to the fighting.

But while both of today’s statements are welcome, we need more pressure on both the government and the LTTE.  As AI said today, the Security Council must establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate violations of the laws of war committed by both the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE.  Officials on both sides need to understand that they’ll be held personally accountable for the war crimes their forces have been committing.  That’s our best hope to save the civilians still trapped in the war zone.  The Security Council must act immediately.  Thousands of innocent lives are at stake.

  1. I think Amnesty staff during their free time should sit down and go through this site. http://www.defence.lk... Where you can find captured LTTE Terrorist pictures from their private collection… Just like Captured Nazi Pictures during WW2.

I found one which i was fond of Titled. ‘A sea tiger child recruit receiving a cyanide capsule following a basic weapon training passing-out at Mullaittivu.’

Still the world wants to save these kind of Terrorist .. Also this is what the FBI says..

  4. LTTE is finsihed and over with or nearly so. Why is that everybody is just hung up on the 50,000 that are being used by LTTE as human shields.? If the LTTE has been nearly "demolished" completely how do you explain the high rates of Tamil civilian deaths?

What about the rest 150,000 or so intenred Tamils in concentration style camps gouing through rape and denial of freedom of movement? I think GOSL is bent on Tamil Genocide using the LTTE terrorist scare.

What about the white van abductions and holding innocent Tamil civilians in jails in Colombo?

What about the atrocities Sinhalese thugs are letting loose in the upcountry and just condoned by the Sri Lankan government?

  7. In response to Sam's comments, I think we're clear that our concern is about the civilians trapped in the war zone; it's their safety we're trying to protect.

In response to Sri's comments, AI has publicly expressed concerns repeatedly about the civilians who've managed to flee the war zone and are now being held in internment camps by the government. Just look at our statements on the Sri Lanka page of the AIUSA website. You'll also find on that page an urgent action appeal which we just issued today about an enforced disappearance of a Sri Lankan human rights defender in Colombo, in which a white van was involved.

  8. Such hypocrisy!! Who are we to criticize the Sri Lankians?? Employing preditor drones to slaughter poor innocent Afghanis and Pakistanis. What in the hell are we doing in Afghanistan? Who is Obama to be telling some other head of state to be more humane? How about the Palestinians? Whose missiles, white phosphorus, napalm, bunker busters are the Israelis using to slaughter Palestinians? They're ours. And Iran! Why shouldn't they develop nuclear missiles? We know of a hundred and fifty Israeli nuclear missiles aimed at Iran. There are probably thousands. Why shouldn't they want to protect them selves.

  11. There were 165000 people were trapped in the last safe war zone, not 50000. All of them are not displaced Tamil people in that area. Most of them, it is their homeland with all their properties. Why they should move out of their own place??? As a democratic country, why is the Tamil population only treated like this??? The simple answer is just because they born in that land as Tamils.
If the SL Govt. is doing everything right, why can't it allow the international media while the war took place, how we watched Iraq war???
When foreign delicates visited the concentration camps, why didn't army officals allow people to speak alone with delicates???
Both sides will escape from everything and the innocent Tamil civilians not only dying by heavy weapon fires, already many are dying without treatment and starvation.
    God bless civilian souls.

hen our memories are greater than our Dreams, the end is undeniably near. To say the good old days are behind us would be futile for any man, because life is still just a Dream. We still Dream of better days. That is why our scientists are still working tirelessly to find better ways to cure illnesses. That is why we send our children to school to give them the opportunities we never had. Therefore I implore us to Dream, dare to Dream, live the Dream.”
Let our Dreams live in our children and generations to follow; this is in fact a Dream, a Dream of a better world, a Dream of a better way of life, a Dream of equality and justice for all. The Dream that Martin Luther King Junior lived and died for. It is the same Dream we call the American Dream – that if given the opportunity, men with the identical potential can succeed equally on the same field of play.

When we came into this world, the Divine architect handed us a blank check. (Life) At the end of our journey we will have to stand before this Grandiose Divine Architect and go over the receipts, just for the record. Are we running a deficit?
Since we are largely educated in a Monotheistic environment, I presume that the majority of us are familiar with the story of Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel. "And God said unto Cain, where is Abel, your brother? I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper? “[Gen4v9] Cain was running a deficit before the Divine architect.
If you should come to me poor and destitute and ask me for a loan and I give you a dollar; you are now indebted to me. If you should now waste that dollar on things that have no intrinsic worth or value, you will be running a deficit. And when I should call on you to repay that loan, and all the interest that might have accrued, you won’t be able to repay me.

Today the human race is running a deficit. We have evolved beyond our own expectation; electronic technology changes daily. We have spanned the globe, reached deep into space, split atoms. Diseases that once plagued us are no longer demonic spells. They now can be diagnosed, treated and some can even be cured.
We can produce enough food to feed the world five times over. Yet still we see unprecedented starvation that plagues sections of Africa. Drug smuggling and its associated crime are wreaking havoc throughout Mexico, South and Central America. There is a total disregard for civil rights in Myanmar and other regions of Asia. Homelessness in American cities has converted our subway systems into the only safe havens that protect many of our citizens from the inclemency of the weather. We are running a deficit! Gang violence in Kingston, Jamaica has reached an intolerable all-time high. The greed of few has taken priority over the needs of many. We are running a deficit! We need to stand by our brothers. We need to end this deficit!
